The Dent County Commissioners met for their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was not in attendance due to a prior commitment and District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell was appointed as Acting Presiding Commissioner over the meeting. Randall Stagner and his father were in to discuss the Old Stagner Cemetery. The last deed shows that the County purchased the Cemetery for $1. The Stagners have family members in the Cemetery and would like to maintain the Cemetery, put a fence up and do landscaping as well as purchase the Cemetery back from the County for $1. The Commission will visit with Prosecutor Sid Pearson and get back with the Mr. Stagner. In road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5530 and 6180; while ditch work would be done on Dent County Road 6200. Purcell also reported that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 6200 and 6020 to cut the wash boarding effect. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that a crew would be installing pipe and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2135 and 5240, and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 2150. Both districts reported that brown rock would be hauled. The Commission then reviewed a Modification of a Grant or Agreement from the Mark Twain National Forest for $93,450.00. This is to cover the increase of the cost of the rebuilding of the Swiney Bridge in Bunker and all agreed to sign the agreement. The Commission agreed to pay $5,900 to replace one of the air conditioning units in the Judicial Building that went out. This was an emergency situation and had to be ordered immediately. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported the deadline to absentee vote is August 1st to request a mail out a ballot; and the last day to absentee vote is August 6th in the Clerk’s office. The Dent County Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, August 4th from 8:00 am to 12:00 (noon) for absentee voting. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Tuesday, July 10th at 1:55 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that the driver of an unidentified vehicle pumped $7.55 in fuel and left without paying. Later that afternoon at 4:38, an officer was dispatched to the Mobil convenience store in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that the driver of a red truck loaded with camping gear pumped $58.07 in fuel and left without paying. That same evening at 5:56 an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Hunt in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took an air conditioner window unit valued $105.59 from a residence. That same night at 8:20, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Schwinn chopper style bicycle valued at $200 from the yard of a residence. The bicycle was later recovered abandoned. On Wednesday, July 11th at 7:07 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Post and Timber mill located on Highway 32 East in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took diesel fuel valued at $600 and damaged a valve, a chain, and hose valued at $275. On Thursday, July 12th at 8:03 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Babb Lane truck parking area in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took diesel fuel valued at $350 from the tank of a truck. Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host a Free Songs of the Ozarks Outdoors Music Program at the Round Spring campground amphitheater on Friday, August 3rd. The program will begin at 8:30 p.m. Round Spring is located 12 miles North of Eminence on State Route 19. The Salem High School Color Guard, the Marching Flag Auxiliary of The Salem High Schools Marching Band will be having a BBQ with hot food, cold drinks and all the fixin’s. The Salem High School Color Guard will be at the Ranch Motel located on Highway 32 West today from 1:00 until the coolers are dry. David Freese tallied three hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Matt Holliday added two hits, including a solo homer, to go with two runs scored as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-4, in the finale of a four-game set. Freese, who left the contest in the sixth due to cramping in his right calf, is 16-for-28 during his nine-game hitting streak. Matt Carpenter registered three hits and an RBI, Tony Cruz recorded two hits and a pair of RBI and Allen Craig had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for St. Louis, which took the last three games of the set and went 6-1 on its homestand. Jake Westbrook (9-8) surrendered four runs, three earned, on seven hits and a walk in seven innings. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Cubs this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO at 12:45.
Jason Vargas pitched eight strong innings of one-hit, one-run ball and the Seattle Mariners downed the Kansas City Royals, 4-1, in the opener of a four-game set Thursday at Safeco Field. Luis Mendoza (4-7) suffered the loss after giving up all four runs on nine hits and three walks over five-plus innings of work. Butler finished with a pair of doubles to account for the only two Royals hits as they lost for the fourth time in their last five games. The Royals and Seattle Mariners play again tonight.

Funeral services for Winfred C. Gibbs, age 85, of Salem will be Monday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services for Stanley Babb of Warrenton, formerly of Salem, age 85, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem.
Funeral arrangements for Jackie Ham of St. James, age 63, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
