An accident occurred Tuesday morning at 5:35 in Crawford County about five miles North of Cuba on Highway P that took the life of a Cuba man. According to the highway patrol report, a 1982 Kawasaki driven by 60-year old Eddie T. Brooks of Cuba was traveling northbound on Route P and struck a deer which ejected Brooks from the motorcycle. Brooks was transported to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by the North Crawford ambulance. Dr. Musa Modad pronounced Brooks dead at 6:33 am. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Kawasaki sustained moderate damage and removed by a family member.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a trespasser and mental commitment order. On Tuesday, July 19^th at 8:00 in the morning, an officer was detailed to 803 East Highway 32 to the Smokers Outlet in reference to a trespasser. The investigation revealed that a 52-year old Salem man had been advised previously not to enter the business. He was placed under arrest, issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Wednesday, July 20^th at 5:00 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in reference to a mental commitment order. A 48-year old Salem woman was taken into custody and transported to the Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Crystal City, and released to their custody on a 96-hour commitment order.

Some 717 surveys have been completed in the Meramec Region as a part of the Missouri BroadbandNow project, including 470 mail-back residential surveys. Members of the Broadband Regional Technology Planning Team will gather on Tuesday, August 9^th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Meramec Regional Planning Commission to review and discuss the results of the data. Earlier this year, the state’s 19 Regional Planning Commissions began reaching out to area businesses and various constituent groups within their local communities as part of Gov. Jay Nixon’s goal of increasing broadband accessibility from its current level of 79 percent to 95 percent by 2014. By surveying local communities, data was provided on broadband access and infrastructure to help meet the needs of citizens, businesses and government. A Regional Technology Planning Team was formed in April to analyze the survey data as it begins developing a strategic plan for increasing broadband for the Meramec Region and state as a whole. During the meeting, sector leaders will discuss the completed survey results for each sector including those for agriculture, energy, environment, healthcare, higher education, K-12 education, business/industry, library, local government, public safety, tourism, workforce development and economic development. If you love the Meramec River and want to help clean up its banks, join park staff from Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg on a cleanup event Saturday, July 30^th. The cleanup will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to volunteer to assist. Previous flood events have deposited significant debris along the stream bank that extends from the park campground's gravel bar along the Meramec River to the boat launch in the park's day-use area. If time permits, volunteers will also clean up trash along the creek that flows throughout the picnic and shelter area. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be provided. Reservations for this event are not required but are encouraged by calling 573-245-6576. Roadwork continues in the KSMO listening area. In Crawford County, roadway maintenance and repair will take place on Thursday, July 28^th on Highway 19 between Highway 8 and the Dent County Line. In Dent County, roadway resurfacing continues through mid-August on Route 32 between Route 72 and the Texas County Line, and one southbound lane will be open in the work area. In Phelps County, culvert pipe replacement will take place today on Highway 68 just west of Highway 8. Motorists are advised to find an alternative route. There is also some clearing and grading work continues in preparation for the upcoming construction of two roundabout intersections on the I-44 Business Loop at mile marker 184. Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer and David Freese added a solo blast to carry the Cardinals past the lowly Astros, 3-1. Jake Westbrook (9-4) started the second meeting of the four-game set and lasted six frames, allowing one run on seven hits to earn the win. Jason Motte, Lance Lynn and Fernando Salas each tossed a scoreless inning of relief, with the latter working around a two-out walk in the ninth to post his 19th save of the season. St. Louis, which has won five of six to stay atop the NL Central, held Houston to a 1-for-11 effort with runners in scoring position. The Cards and Astros play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.

David Ortiz went 4-for-5 with a season-high five RBI as the Boston Red Sox outlasted the Kansas City Royals, 13-9. Royal’s outfielder Mitch Maier pitched the bottom of the eighth inning with his team trailing 13-7. It was the 10th time in team history Kansas City used a position player as a pitcher and the first since Tony Pena Jr. pitched on July 21, 2008. Maier gave up one hit, a double to Ortiz, but no runs. KC's Billy Butler finished the day with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored in the Royals' second loss in three games.  Alex Gordon also hit a homer for the Royals. Nathan Adcock (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in just one-third of an inning of relief. Danny Duffy started the game, but lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks. The two teams play again tonight.
