The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf stated that Open Houses would be held on Monday, August 16th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Junior/Senior High Schools, and on Tuesday, August 17th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at William Lynch and from 7:00 to 8:00 pm for the Upper Elementary. In the facilities update, projects being taken care of currently include: the renovation of the press box with work being done by Conway Construction with donations being collected by Stan Podorski. New windows, the old floors replaced and steps, adding an exhaust fan, and adding more concrete at the landing of the steps. The only part the district is responsible for is the cost of the dumpster and the cost of the concrete. The technology office is being renovated for Becky Smith's office and a concrete dock has been added in the front for shipping. New concrete steps are being built on the west side of the Junior High as the old ones were cracking and becoming unsafe. Depending on funding and timing, roofing projects at Williams Lynch and the High School gym lobby are planned and hopefully will start next week and possibly replacing a roof at the Vocational AG that was installed in 1993 that the seams are very deteriorated. Mrs. Rumpf and Tammy purchased flowers from Greenspot and the custodial staff and maintenance staff are planting these flowers around the campus. Weeds are being removed and weed block, rock and mulch are being added. Salem Wood Products donated two truckloads of mulch for the flowerbeds. A sidewalk was added at the south exit of the Upper Elementary. The custodial staff is putting new wax on all the floors. And about 80 bats have been removed from the Vocational AG building. Mrs. Rumpf discovered how they were getting in and out and the holes were filled-in. The first week in August, a company has been hired to repair, seal, and restripe the parking lot at the Upper Elementary and repair and seals the playground at the Lower Elementary. During the annual school bus inspection it was noted that 50% passed. The average daily attendance for summer school was 35.94, which was up from last year. In bids, the Board approved the bids from Hyland Dairy for milk, Flowers for bread, MFA for energy and Advanced Pest Control for the school year 2010/2011. The Board approved the 1.5% for Certified Staff support, approved the tuition rate, based on the figure from Ed Pratt, approved the Developmental Pre-School lease, and approved Board of Education policy BBFA, which has to be passed each year regarding school board member ethics. The Board than approved the non-resident student(s), and also declared property surplus. Mrs. Rumpf presented to the Board a Performance-Based Superintendent Evaluation, which is inline with DESE, that the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent plan to use this year to keep the Board informed and updated on their progress, and although this was only suggested, the Board unanimously approved the idea and thanked Mrs. Rumpf. She then presented the Board with five goals for the school year. The Board then approved the tax rate hearing, which is required by law for Thursday, August 26th at 6:00 followed the regular monthly meeting. The Board then accepted the resignations of Nathan Derrickson as Special Ed instructor, Laurie Barton as a part-time Art instructor and Junior High Basketball Coach, Mitch Lundy as the 7th and 8th grade Basketball Coach and Kim Bettigrew in Food Service. In Closed Session, the Board hired Jessica Stewart for 4^th grade, Alesia White as Band assistant, Eyreka Peterson for Flags, Terrance Parmeter as 7^th/8^th grade basketball coach, and Tina McKee and Lisa Jadwin for the elementary yearbook. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident occurred on Saturday, July 17^th at 1:43 in the afternoon on Highway 19 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2000 Ford Ranger driven by Christopher Archer of Salem failed to stop and made contact with a 1999 Plymouth Voyager driven by Jeri Dahm of Salem, which was stopped in traffic. Archer, one passenger from the Ranger, and one passenger from the Voyager were transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for medical treatment. No vehicles were towed.

The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29^th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies.
