ATTENTION: Residents on the West Side of town will have their water turned off for about (2) hours on Monday, July 27^th from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for construction of a new water main.

An accident occurred at 12:40 Saturday afternoon in Shannon County on Highway 19 about twenty-five miles north of Eminence. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 GMC truck driven by 49 year-old Terry Warren of Salem traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, ejecting the driver. Warren suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac to St. Johns in St. Louis. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC truck sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Tyler’s Towing.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the hospital library. In the summary of operations for the month of June, the hospital showed a gain from operations of $72,235, and an excess of revenues over expenses of  $76,158. For the fiscal year, the hospital had a gain from operations of 96,876 and excess of revenues over expenses of $556,593. The hospital had a gain in cash and a decrease in receivables for the fiscal year that allowed the hospital to purchase two more $100,000 CD’s. Cash flow for the hospital increased by $21,424 and the days in accounts receivable fell to just 45. During the month, there were 1,907 outpatients registered, 858 emergency room visits, 66 emergency room transfers, 188 ambulance runs with 45 dry runs, 37 surgery cases, 289 Home Health visits, 8,846 lab tests, 1,162 radiological procedures, 356 CT scans, 27 MRI scans, 27 nuclear med scans, 332 rehab treatments, 187 dialysis treatments, and 409 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor went over the emergency room patient satisfaction results and there were 91 responses, most of them extremely positive about their experience. He also reviewed the in-patient satisfaction survey results and there were 26 responses with most areas receiving exceptional ratings. Pryor reported that most of the work has now been done on the Physicians Office Building 3 to bring the expenses to $1,350,132. He said that the hospital auxiliary held their annual luncheon on July 7^th with 34 people in attendance. Twelve new members joined the auxiliary from the meeting. Pryor stated that he had been in touch with the Bill Schwartz from St. Louis who did the original hospital video. He will be back in town in August to discuss the new video. In the chief of staff’s report, the board approved courtesy staff privileges to Dr. Ann Delonais-Turner, M.D. in the emergency room. Assistant Administrator Paul McVicker updated the board on the electronic medical records. He said that the new firewall has been installed, that the e-forms have been purchased and training schedules have been developed. He also said that Dr. Punzelen’s office would be converting to the EMR records in 2010. A public tax hearing has been set for August 20^th at 5:45 in the hospital library and the public is invited to attend. The Long-Term Care Unit was inspected by the state and the report was very good with a few minor instances noted in care planning. The Long-Term Care Family Council then recommended that the hospital should enlarge the auxiliary room and nurse’s station before they address extending the driveway and make additional parking near the Long-Term Care Unit. The board approved the budgeted purchase of two printers for Acute Care and Long-Term Care from ABS for $230, three monitors for Administration and Purchasing for $423 from PC Connection, two fatigue mats for the Pharmacy from Consolidated Plastics for $189, one set of ophthalmoscope and otoscope for Long-Term Care from Cardinal Health for $454, a lift recliner for Long-Term Care from Southtown Furniture for $1,125, five vacuum cleaners for Housekeeping from Bottorff Appliance for $998, one blanket warmer for Long-Term Care from Owens and Minor for $3,001, and two modules needed for the electronic health records for Physical Therapy and Respiratory Therapy from CPSI for $15,300. In the non-budgeted purchases, the board approved the purchase of an uninterruptible power supply from PC Connection for $270, a deep freeze enterprise license for 100 computers for the information systems from CompUSA for $2,232, a multifunction copier, fax and scanner for the clinics from PC Connection for $636; and an autoclave sterilizer for Sterile Processing from AMSCO for $54,935. In the election of officers for the next fiscal year, Joe Hayes was elected chairman, Judy Thompson is the new Vice-Chairman and Leon Kreisler is the new Secretary. Board member Sheila Kunkel has moved from her district and will resign from the board at the end of this month. Kunkel is from District 2 and if anyone from that district is interested in fulfilling her term on the board, they need to contact the Salem Memorial District Hospital Administration at 729-6626 for all the information on becoming a board member. The board then voted to go into closed session.

The American Legion Post #99 located on Highway 32 West in Salem will receive a captured Russian tank to put at the post as a memorial. A concrete pad that requires 16-yards of concrete has been poured and anyone that is interested in donating to the American Legion for the concrete pad is asked to call Richard LaBrash at the American Legion at 729-1394 or you can drop your donation off at the City of Salem Administration Office.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Wilburn “Glen” Heavin of Rolla, age 95, will be held today at 3:00 at the Victor Baptist Church in Anutt. Visitation wil be at the church starting at 1:00. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Anutt Cemetery or Anutt Community Building. All arrangements are under the direction of the Null and Son Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Leon Anderson of Steelville, age 68, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Fishwick of Steelville, age 99, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Steelville Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Kinder Cemetery in Cuba. Memorials are suggested to the Gibbs Employee Fund or Masonic Home or Presbyterian Church of Steelville.

Funeral services for David Anthony Zachritz of Steelville, age 47, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
