The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6240, 6660 and 6670. Purcell also said that ditch work would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 4180. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 3060, 3165, 3200 and 4290. Larson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2320 and 4300, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2330. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that at last Thursday’s meeting, the Commission voted to go ahead and purchase a backhoe from Fabick Equipment at the purchase price of $87,369. At that same meeting Commissioner Larson made a motion to seek local bids for lease purchase financing of the backhoe and those bids are to be open at this Thursday’s meeting at 10:00.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public. 

The Dent County Fire Protection District has released their reports. On Friday, July 22^nd at 6:12 in the evening, a call came in for a medical emergency on Dent County Road 3230 to a family dwelling. A total of eight firefighters responded and assisted EMS crews at the scene. The patient was transported to the station by the Salem Memorial District Hospital and then Air Evac’d to the St. Clair Hospital in Fenton. On Sunday, July 24^th at 1:58 in the afternoon, a call came in to create a landing zone at the station. A total of four firefighters responded to the call and provided manpower on the scene. Then at 7:16 that evening, a call came in regarding a building fire in the 500 block of South Warfel in Salem. A total of 15 firefighters responded to the call. Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-story wood frame structure building with light smoke coming from the chimney and roof vents. Per the Salem Police Department, lightning struck 15-foot behind the house and no electric was run to the home. Upon inspection, no utilities were run to the home and it appeared lightning struck the tree behind the home and then ran into the house, causing insulation in the attic to smolder. The fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported. The scene was under control at 8:23 pm.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Crawford County on Saturday, July 16^th.  The checkpoint was conducted from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm, on Missouri Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park. During the course of the four-hour operation troopers stopped 531 vehicles.  There were seven arrests for DWI, six violations for seat belts, one violation for a child restraint, three non-moving traffic violations, six driver’s license violations, four uninsured motorists violations, six minor in possession violations, two misdemeanor warrant arrests, four misdemeanor drug violations and 19 warnings were issued.

An accident occurred on Monday, July 18^th at 7:19 in the evening on Highway 19 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by Justin Fleener of Salem crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road, struck a ditch and tree, and came to a rest. Fleener stated that he was coughing and passed out causing him to leave the highway. He suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a mental commitment order, a stolen shotgun, a transfer from the Crawford County Jail to the Dent County Jail, and a burglary. On Friday, July 15^th at 9:45 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in reference to a mental commitment order. A 48-year old Springfield man was taken into custody and transport to Ozark Medical Center in West Plains on a 96-hour detention and released to their custody. On Saturday, July 16^th at 9:25 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of West Rolla Road in reference to a stolen shotgun. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown removed a single shot shotgun from an unsecured vehicle at the residence. At 9:30 that same morning, an officer was sent to the Crawford County Jail in reference to a 44-year old man from Steelville who was incarcerated on a City of Salem warrant that had been issued on June 28^th. He was taken into custody and transported back to Salem where he was incarcerated on the warrant. Then at 4:00 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 1100 block of East Center Street in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown removed a window air conditioner, gained entry to the residence and took $20 in cash. Anyone with any information regarding the stolen shotgun or burglary reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

There will be a MANDATORY MEETING for all 4-H/FFA livestock members selling an animal or ham at the Dent County Fair tonight at the Commons Youth Building beginning at 7:00 pm. Yadier Molina went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and knocked in two runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals take a 10-5 victory over the Houston Astros to open a four-game set. Colby Rasmus added a two-run homer and drove in three while Nick Punto went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and run scored for the Cardinals, who have won four of five. Kyle McClellan (7-6) benefited from the run support to win for the first time since May 19 against Houston. He gave up six hits with no walks and five strikeouts over seven innings. The Cards and Astros play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.

Mike Aviles dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 14th inning to knock in the winning run, sending the Kansas City Royals past the Boston Red Sox, 3-1, in a marathon at Fenway Park in the opener of a four-game series. Alcides Escobar lofted a sacrifice fly to center to plate an insurance run for Kansas City. Louis Coleman (1-2) worked two innings in relief to earn his first career win while Joakim Soria worked around a leadoff double to earn his 18th save of the season and 150th of his career. Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a double, while Melky Cabrera collected four hits for the Royals, who have won five of their past six games. The Royals and Red Sox will play again tonight.
