The Salem Hospital Board of Directors met for their regular meeting Thursday evening. In the Administrator’s report, the summary of operations showed there was an excess of revenues over expenses of $179,310 for June. For the year, there was an excess of revenues over expenses of $1,554,000. There were a total of 77 acute care patients admitted with 926 ER visits. There were 50 ER admissions to acute care and 68 ER transfers. There were 38 surgeries for the month of June, 265 Home Health visits and 418 clinic visits. The Hospital Auxiliary held their annual Friendship Luncheon on July 6^th with 26 members and guests attending. The Board heard about the 178 responses to the Emergency Room Patient Satisfaction Survey received from April through June. Nearly all responses were in the ninety to one hundred percentile range to the positive. Twenty-six responses were received in the inpatient satisfaction survey, and again all responses were very positive in all categories. In the Chief of Staff’s report, the medical staff met on July 19^th and recommended the approval of courtesy staff privileges for Joseph Spennetta, M.D. in Emergency Medicine. The Board approved their recommendation. The hospital will host a Wilderness Medicine Summer Conference July 28^th through August 1^st. This will bring in physicians from around the state and elsewhere to visit the hospital.  In other business, Medhost was on site recently for a planning workshop for the Electronic Medical Record. The service is planning to go live in November with a training scheduled for September. In regards to the hospital lagoon, Krehbiel Engineering was here in June to take soil samples but took samples on the hospital site, not the lagoon site. The samples will have to redone. The Hospital Foundation Committee will be holding a meeting on August 10^th at 4:30 p.m. at the Salem Hospital. In new business, the Board approved three purchases. The first purchase was a LaserJet printer for infection control at a cost of $384 from Quill and HP. They also approved the purchase of two computers and monitors for the IS Department from ABS for $1,816; and eight office chairs for Long Term Care and the visiting clinic from ABS for $2,410. The Board approved continuing the work in the Visiting Physician’s Clinic, including chairs, painting and flooring, etc for $21,000. There will be a public tax hearing for the hospital on August 19^th at 5:45 p.m. Lastly, the board elected new officers and they are Judy Thompson as Chairperson, Leon Kreisler as Vice Chairman and A. J. Seay as Secretary. The Board then went into executive session.

An accident occurred at 8:35 Thursday evening in St. Louis on Interstate 270 at Interstate 70. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Ford Contour driven by 20-year old Robert Matsko of St. Louis and a 2011 Kia Sorento driven by 33-year old Bobbie Cole of Salem were both traveling southbound on 270. Cole made a lane change to the left and Matsko made a land change to the left. The front left of the Ford struck the right rear of the Kia causing the Kia to overturn. Matsko suffered moderate injuries while Cole suffered serious injuries. Both were taken to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur by the Pattonville ambulance. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Contour sustained extensive damage, the Kia Sorento was totaled and both vehicles were removed from the scene by Hood’s Towing.

An accident occurred on Wednesday, July 21^st at 9:06 pm at the intersection of Highway 19 and 32. According to the Salem Police report, A 1998 Chevrolet S-10 driven by Lisa Jadwin of Salem was turning off of Highway 32, merging onto Highway 19 to travel northbound and struck a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 driven by Robert Ellerbee of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19, crossing the intersection of Highway 32. Both vehicles were removed from the original accident site. Ellerbee suffered minor injuries to the back and hip and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The 1994 S-10 sustained moderate damage while the 1998 S-10 sustained minor damage.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced that the City of Salem has been approved by the National Park Service for a $34,109 grant to help develop soccer field complex for the city. The grant is one of 13 FY 2009 Land and Water Conservation Fund grants for Missouri recommended to the National Park Service by the State Inter-Agency Council for Outdoor Recreation. The LWCF program provides federal grants to assist with park and recreation needs. Land developed with these funds is protected in perpetuity by the National Park Service and must be used for outdoor recreation. The grants are available to all local governments and public school districts and can be used for development or renovation of outdoor recreation facilities or acquisition of parkland. All projects require a 55 percent match. In Missouri, the program is administered by the Department of Natural Resources.

The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29^th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies.
