The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Thursday morning. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to inform the commissioners that as of July 21^st, funds received in CART total $56,743.68, which is up year to date $15,907.94. Vernon Cornelius came back in to discuss the railroad right-of-way in Crawford County on his property that was deeded to Dent County. He stated that he talked to the Prosecutor Andrew Curley and brought in the items that Curley wanted him to supply, including a request, portion of the Platte map, and the quitclaim. The commissioners will meet with Curley before proceeding. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5060, 5090, 4185, 4126, 4230, 4235, 4237, 5440, 6580, and 6585. He said that a man would be working on dump truck #117 and putting a new signal switch on it. Purcell also stated that West Asphalt will be performing an asphalt overlay on county roads 6380 and 5043 on Monday, July 28^th. He stated that if your route involves these roads, you might want to take an alternate route on Monday. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4370, 3190, 3235, and 3285. He also said that crews would be cutting brush on county roads 2315 and 3200 while a man will be hauling material to county road 3300. Larson also stated that chip and seal will take place on county roads 3280 and 3260 on Tuesday, July 29^th. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Region I Homeland Oversight Committee meeting and that there are still grant dollars available. Emergency responders including fire departments, law enforcement, hospitals, etc may apply. For more information on these grants, contact Amy McMillan at the MRPC at 573-265-2993. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated the new 2014 assessed valuation of Dent County is $155,340,382. She also said that absentee voting continues for the August 5^th Primary at her office. The last day to vote by mail out ballot is July 30^th and the last day to vote in office is August 4^th. Curley also said that they would be testing voting equipment on July 28^th, after conducting poll worker training. The Commissioners then set a hearing date for Monday, August 4^th at 10:00 am for the reinstatement of the General Revenue Tax Rate pursuant to Chapter 137.073 of the Missouri Statutes. The Great River Associates called and recommended going with the lowest bid for the construction of the bridge on Dent County Road 3210, which was Robertson Contractors from Poplar Bluff. Their bid was for $340,678.72 and the commissioners voted 3-0 to go with their recommendation. It was inadvertently reported in Tuesday’s Your World Today that the Office of State Courts Administration would provide the $5,706.55 for the polycom for the Judicial Building courtroom. It will actually be paid out of the General Revenue Capital Expense. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and it is open to the public. 

An accident occurred early Wednesday morning at 12:30 in Dent County on county road 6220 about eight miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 driven by 14-year old Dalton Edwards of Salem was traveling eastbound, failed to negotiate a curve, traveling off the roadway striking a tree before coming to rest. Edwards suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed by the owner.

An accident happened early Thursday morning at 1:00 am in Dent County on Highway 68 about two miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Toyota driven by 21-year old Christopher Rocoberto of Salem ran off the right side of the road, struck several trees and overturned. Rocoberto suffered serious injuries and was flown to Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular July meeting Wednesday evening at the boardroom. After approval of the agenda and consent agenda, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on the upcoming Open House dates and times. Open House for the Lower Elementary will be held on Monday, August 11th from 5:30 to 6:30 and for the Upper Elementary from 6:30 to 7:30 pm that same night. Then on Tuesday, August 12th from 5:30 to 8:00 pm will be the Open House for the Salem Middle School and Salem Senior High School. Carvajal reported that all renovation projects would be done by August 1st, except the expansion on the library, but that would be done before the start of school. He did add that no landscaping has been done and felt this time of year would not be a good time for that, but it would be done in the future. He also said that the final budget on these projects would be clearer for next months meeting and there was talk about having the Middle School gymnasium floor redone, like the High School...but would know more next month. In new business, there was one bid for milk, bread and fuel, which the Board approved and the Board voted to go with Integrity Pest Control. The Board approved surplus property bids as submitted. Carvajal requested moving $200,000 from the Classroom Trust Fund, which is money from the state, to Fund 4, which is the capitol improvement fund. The question was asked if the money was not needed could it be transferred back to which Carvajal said no…but he felt it was needed in Fund 4…just in case of. The Board then unanimously approved his request. The Board then set the Tax Rate Hearing for August 21st beginning at 5:45, followed by the August monthly meeting. There were no resignations at this time and the Board then voted to go into closed session.
