The Salem Police Department released several of their reports. On Tuesday, July 9^th at 3:40 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a shoplifter that had stolen merchandise from The Beehive Florist, Gateway to Memories and More, and Lucky Me. The investigation revealed that a 33-year old Salem female had taken merchandise, valued $167.99, from the three locations. She was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. At 9:21 that night, an officer was contacted in reference to damage to private property. That investigation revealed that someone damaged pool equipment, valued $2,500, at a residence in the 1200 block of South Macarthur. On Wednesday, July 10^th at 12:39 in the afternoon, an officer located a 29-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from Pulaski County. He was taken into custody near the 800 block of South Park and incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. At 6:40 that evening, an officer located a 24-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody near the 700 block of East Center and later released after paying a fine. On Thursday, July 11^th at 9:15 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Dent County Veterinary Clinic in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered the building by force, took a controlled substance, and caused approximately $20 in property damage. On Friday, July 12^th at 1:51 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, a 66-year old Salem male, for an open beer container. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 5:05 that evening, an officer was detailed to the Mobil Convenience Store in reference to theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that an unidentified male driving a brown Ford pickup pumped $10 in fuel and left without paying. Later that same night at 10:03, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 21-year old Salem male for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the damage to private property or burglary reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR) Superintendent, William N. Black, invites the public to comment on a proposed Current River Trail designated for hiking only. Presently, the section of the park from the Current River State Park to the Brushy Creek area does not have any long distance hiking opportunities. Most of the recreation is limited to activities on the river. This proposal is a cooperative planning activity between ONSR, the Ozark Trail Association (OTA), the L-A-D Foundation, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The goal is to identify a hiking trail route that will meet the following objectives: Provide a varied and scenic route that highlights the unique features of the area; Reinforce the non-motorized primitive recreational opportunities in this section of the river corridor; Connect with the trail network of the Current River State Park and Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry; and be designed and designated for foot-only traffic. This proposal will be examining different route alternatives in a corridor along north and east of the Current River, starting at the Current River State Park to Round Spring, and then down river from Round Spring to the Brushy Creek area. The trail will cross-land managed by ONSR, L-A-D, and DNR. A 30-day public comment period about the proposal for the Current River Trail has begun.  Public input is being solicited to help define any issues to be addressed in an upcoming Environmental Assessment (EA).  Public comments received during this 30-day “scoping” period will be used to develop the EA.  When the EA is completed and released for review, the public will be encouraged to comment. Public comment will be accepted through August 30, 2013 and may be submitted online by selecting Ozark National Scenic Riverways at the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment website, http://parkplanning.nps.gov, or sent to: Superintendent – Current River Trail Ozarks National Scenic Riverways P. O. Box 490 Van Buren, MO 63965. Commenters should be aware that their comments, including names and home addresses, are considered public information and may be released to the public.  However, individual commenters may request that their name and home address be withheld from public release by stating this in their comment letter. 

An anonymous donation has been received that will allow the Salem GED Center to be open for several more weeks. While a local group of citizens continue to search for new funding sources, this short term strategy will allow the center to be open for 25 hours per week, thereby helping the students currently enrolled in the program to get their GED.  The new hours will begin on Monday, August 5th and are: Mondays - 8 am to 1 pm, Tuesdays - 8 am to 1 pm and 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday - 8 am to 2 pm, and Thursday - 8 am to 2 pm. An accident occurred at 4:22 in the afternoon Monday in Phelps County on Route O about three miles south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 23-year old Richard Johnson of Rolla was riding a 1985 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle northbound when he lost control due to a mechanical defect. The motorcycle then skidded across the roadway and off the left side, ejecting the driver. Johnson suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

Shelby Miller tossed six solid innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals in a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game set. Miller (10-6) gave up just three hits and a walk with six strikeouts for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five games. Allen Craig went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. The Cardinals and Phillies will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.

Mike Moustakas' early RBI double proved to be the difference as Kansas City clipped Baltimore, 3-2, in the second test of a four-game series. Eric Hosmer collected a pair of hits and Chris Getz also drove in a run for the Royals, who have won three of their last five. Bruce Chen (4-0) scattered three hits and one run with four strikeouts over six innings to remain unblemished in 2013. The Royals and Orioles will play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Hazel Josephine Aaron of Rolla, age 89, will be Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Phelps County Homecare Hospice.

Funeral services for Iona "Sam" (Byrd) Akers Deubig of Salem, age 81, will be held Thursday at 3:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:30 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Revival Tabernacle.

Funeral services for Elder Berlie Turnbough of Steelville, age 77, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00.
