ATTENTION… Residents on the West Side of town will have their water turned off for about (2) hours on Monday, July 27^th for construction of a new water main.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5552, 6630 and 6580. Purcell said that most of the District 1 road crewmembers would be working on the widening of Dent County Road 5220.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2070, 3160, 3165, 3170 and 4310. Larson also said that a culvert would be replaced at the intersection of Dent County Roads 3030 and 3040 and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 4300. Dent County Deputy Clerk Crystal Pilkington reported that the clerk’s office would be doing a public test of voting equipment on Thursday, July 30^th at 3:00. Pilkington also said that the Dent County Clerk, Dent County Collector and Dent County Assessor’s offices would be open on August 1^st, from 8:00 am until noon. At the previous meeting the Commission accepted a bid from MFA Oil for Diesel at $1.83 per gallon and Unleaded fuel at $1.99 per gallon for the Road  and Bridge Department. Also at that meeting, Judge Sandy Ball stopped by to give the county a check for $1,613 for the cities portion of the Municipal Court cost. The Commission also signed another month’s rental agreement to Fabick Cat on equipment rental for $2500.00.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Charisse Gustafson, a flight nurse for the Salem Air Evac Lifeteam crew, was chosen as the 2009 Regional Safety Award winner July 11^th during the company’s regional awards banquet in St. Louis. The awards banquet honored employees from this region, which includes employees in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. The Regional Safety Award is presented to the employee who has provided a safe working environment and atmosphere for the employees of Air Evac Lifeteam. The Safety Award is one of the most honorable awards that can be received by Air Evac Lifeteam employees. Gustafson has been a nurse with Air Evac Lifeteam since January 2007.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Crawford County on Saturday, July 18^th. The checkpoint was conducted from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm on Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park. During the course of the four-hour operation troopers stopped 679 vehicles. There were a total of 33 violations and 70 warnings were issued. There were 9 DWI violations, 10 seat belt violations, one vehicle registration violation, 7 driver’s license violations, 3 uninsured motorists violations and 3 minor in possession of alcohol. The result of this enforcement checkpoint clearly indicates the need for continued vigorous enforcement, per Captain Kenley. However, the large number of DWI arrests at this checkpoint is also evidence that many motorists still do not fully realize the seriousness of drinking and driving.     

An Arkansas man arrested last December in Phelps County was sentenced to 37-months in prison on federal drug charges, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap announced. Raudel Galvez, 38-year old from Springdale, Arkansas, pleaded guilty in March to one felony count of possession with intent to distribute in excess of 100 kilograms of marijuana.  He appeared for sentencing before United States District Judge Charles A. Shaw. Reap commended the work on the case by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The American Legion Post #99 located on Highway 32 West in Salem will receive a captured Russian tank to put at the post as a memorial. A concrete pad that requires 16-yards of concrete has been poured and anyone that is interested in donating to the American Legion for the concrete pad is asked to call Richard LaBrash at the American Legion at 729-1394 or you can drop your donation off at the City of Salem Administration Office.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Lola Luna of St. James, age 83, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Joey Gant of Bunker, age 40, will be held today at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bunker Relay for Life or the Greeley Cemetery.

Funeral services for Iva Irene Herren of Salem, age 90, will be held today at 12:00 at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will start this morning at 11:00 and last until service time.  Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Donald Leo Pardee of St. James, age 89, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James and at 7:00 there will be a Prayer Vigil. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.
