Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Crawford County on Saturday, July 18th. The checkpoint was conducted from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm on Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park. During the course of the four-hour operation troopers stopped 679 vehicles. There were a total of 33 violations and 70 warnings were issued. There were 9 DWI violations, 10 seat belt violations, one vehicle registration violation, 7 driver’s license violations, 3 uninsured motorists violations and 3 minor in possession of alcohol. The result of this enforcement checkpoint clearly indicates the need for continued vigorous enforcement, per Captain Kenley. However, the large number of DWI arrests at this checkpoint is also evidence that many motorists still do not fully realize the seriousness of drinking and driving.
