The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380, 5510, 5580, 6190 and 6220. Purcell also said that ditch work would be done on Dent County Road 6575, and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5170, 6370 and 6400 and also in the Wisdom Subdivision. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that crews are still busy repairing roads that were washed out due to heavy rains. Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4410, 5280, 5310, 5325, 5330 and 5335. He said that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4020, 4430, 4480, 5300 and 5320. A crew would also be cutting brush on Dent County Road 4030 and removing a downed tree from Dent County Road 4060. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting yesterday afternoon in St. James, where the main topic of discussion will be about grants available for this area. Skiles also reported on the interoperable communication demonstration that was held at the Dent County Fire Station on Tuesday. He said the county has not committed to anything, but just wanted to see what was available. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the public testing of the voting equipment will be held Wednesday, July 28
th at 9:00 am in the clerk’s office and that is open to the public. Curley also wanted to remind everyone that the last day to request an absentee mail-out ballot is July 28
th. At the meeting the Commission awarded Davis, Lynn & Moots the bid to do the Federal Audit for the year 2007. They were the only agency to submit a bid and stated that the audit would not exceed $15,000. Davis, Lynn & Moots recently completed another audit for the county, so they have all the information already on file. The Commissioners also read over the recommended amendment to Ordinance #5, which is the two percent Tourism Tax Ordinance. The current ordinance states that federal, state and local agencies do not have to pay the tax, but the amendment would change to where those agencies had to pay the tax. The Commission held their quarterly evening meeting Tuesday and at that meeting Commissioners Purcell and Larson said that both districts are finished with chip and seal projects and District 2 is 95% finished with the FEMA projects. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 12:15 Wednesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 72 about a half mile north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Mercury Cougar driven by 19-year old Alivia Elliott of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 72 and was attempting to pass an unknown vehicle. Elliott lost control of the Mercury and slid into the path of the unknown vehicle. The Mercury ran off the left side of the roadway, traveled up an embankment, became airborne and struck several small trees. Elliott suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mercury Cougar was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The unknown vehicle was driven from the scene.
Decorated collection cans for the Dent County Baby Contest, Little Mr. & Miss Dent County Contest and Dent County Princess Contest are at several businesses around town. Each penny collected counts as a vote toward those participating. The winners will be announced on Wednesday, August 11th at the Miss Dent County and Jr. Miss Dent County Pageant. Due to the increased interest in the Baby Contest, for age 0 to 24 months, there will be one girl and one boy winner selected and those participating include Madilyn Berry, Teagan Capps, Landon and Timothy Dennison, Brielle Diehl, Madison Grijalva, Ellie Headrick, Kason Luebbert, Shannon Luebbert, Preston McMurry, Preston Norris, Baylee Parks, Jonathan Stites, Kynley Wilson, Gregory Todd and Justin Black. In the Little Mr & Miss Dent County Contest, for age 2 to 4 years old, there will be one girl and one boy winner selected and those participating include Shaley and Wyatt Downing, Brayden Luebbert, Memphis Roderman, Cameron Seay, Colby Welch, Collin Wells and Lindzy Crocker. The Dent County Princess Contest is for girls from 5 to 10 years of age and contestants will include Autumn Blair, Cheyenne Roderman, Hannah Siers, Marissa Tiefenthaler and Alexus Wollman.
The 11th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies. Placido Polanco's leadoff homer in the 11th inning provided the game-winning run, and the Philadelphia Phillies avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-0 victory. Adam Wainwright extended his scoreless innings streak to 25 after giving up six hits while fanning six in six frames for the Cardinals, who had their eight-game win streak snapped. St. Louis advanced just one runner past first base for the duration of the game and had just three base runners overall. With Kyle McClellan (1-3) on to begin the 11th for St. Louis, Polanco hammered a 1-1 pitch into the left field seats to break the scoreless tie. The Cardinals will be in Chicago this afternoon to start a three games series starting at 1:00 on KSMO Radio.
Alex Rodriguez hit home run No. 599 and drove in four runs total, and the Yankees defeated the Royals, 10-4, in the start to a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. Willie Bloomquist registered three hits, while Wilson Betemit and Scott Podsednik each had two hits and an RBI for the Royals, who have lost eight of 10. Mike Aviles had two hits and scored a run, and Billy Butler recorded two hits in defeat. Bruce Chen (5-4) yielded five runs on nine hits and two walks in six frames to take the loss. The Royals and Yankees play again tonight.
The Kansas City Royals have traded infielder Alberto Callaspo to the Angels for pitchers Sean O'Sullivan and Will Smith.Callaspo, 27, batted .275 with eight home runs and 43 RBI in 88 games for the Royals this season, playing primarily third base. Callaspo had been in the lineup for Thursday's game with the Yankees, but was pulled and replaced by Wilson Betemit. To replace Callaspo on the roster, the Royals activated outfielder Rick Ankiel from the disabled list. Ankiel landed on the DL in early May with a right quadriceps strain.

Funeral services for Lois Christine Olmsted of Rolla, age 94, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time.
Graveside services for Charles Lonnie Hensley of Salem, age 61, will be held Saturday morning at 8:00 in the Wofford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request that a tree be planted in memory of Charles. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for Virginia Willhite of St. Louis, formerly of Boss, age 81, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Freewill Baptist Church in Viburnum. Visitation will tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Salem Chapel, and will be from 11:00 until 1:00 at the church Saturday. Interment will be in the Dillard Cemetery.
Funeral services for Carl W. Mayfield of Salem, age 89, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday night. Interment will be in the Lake Spring Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Praise Temple, Inc.
Funeral services for Doris Ann Ponzer of Lake Springs, age 77, will be held Tuesday at 5:00 at the Rolla Chapel on James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 3:00 until service time on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Lake Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure or the Phelps County Hospice Program.
