The Salem Air Evac Lifeteam base was awarded the 2009 Regional Community Service Base Award on Saturday, July 11th at Air Evac Lifeteam’s regional awards banquet in St. Louis. The base opened in December of 2003 and was chosen out of 19 bases in this region, which includes Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana bases. The Regional Community Service Base Award is presented to the base in the Air Evac Lifeteam system that has shown outstanding community service in their market area. Jimmie Steelman, Base Pilot Supervisor for the Salem Air Evac Lifeteam crew, was selected as the 2009 Regional Pilot of the Year also during the July 11th companys regional awards banquet in St. Louis. The Regional Pilot of the Year is presented to the pilot who has exceeded job expectations by presenting a professional image, is a team player, demonstrates a desire to increase knowledge and skills, and actively pursues opportunities to promote Air Evac through community involvement. Steelman has been a pilot with Air Evac Lifeteam since October 2005.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Thursday, July 16th at 7:08 in the morning, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a fire alarm going off in the 100 block of East Roosevelt. Upon arrival firefighters found it to be a false alarm due to the sprinkler system. A total of five firefighters responded to the call. At 11:28 that night, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 32 East. Upon arrival the District assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital with two occupants and also assisted with traffic control. The scene was brought under control and 16 firefighters returned to the station at 11:58 pm. On Friday, July 17th at 10:47 in the morning, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to a motor vehicle accident on “K” Highway. The scene was under control at 11:05 and a total of seven firefighters responded to the call. At 9:31 that night, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to County Road 3255 to assist the Dent County Sheriff’s Department with a search and rescue. Upon arrival firefighters divided into search teams and performed a search for and elderly male. The scene was brought under control at 10:30 and a total of 16 firefighters responded to the call. On Monday, July 20th at 8:10 in the morning, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital with one female patient in the 800 block of McGrath Lane and setup a landing zone. The scene was under control at 8:30 and a total of four firefighters responded to the call.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting in the hospital library tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the minutes from the June 18th meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will address the summary of operations and statistics reports for the month of June. Pryor will also update the Board on the auxiliary report, the hospital activity calendar, legislative issues and the ER and inpatient satisfaction survey results. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then update the Board on the nursing services and ancillary service reports and those will be followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business there will be a physician office building report, a strategic planning update and the SMDH video. During new business the Board will address the public tax meeting to be held on August 20th at 5:45 pm, along with the long term care state survey, the long term care family council improvement recommendations, hospital purchases and the election of officers. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The American Legion Post #99 located on Highway 32 West in Salem will receive a captured Russian tank to put at the post as a memorial. A concrete pad that requires 16-yards of concrete has been poured and anyone that is interested in donating to the American Legion for the concrete pad is asked to call Richard LaBrash at the American Legion at 729-1394 or you can drop your donation off at the City of Salem Administration Office.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

The Boston Red Sox made a trade Wednesday as the Cardinals acquired veteran infielder Julio Lugo and cash considerations from Boston in exchange for outfielder Chris Duncan and a player to be named later or additional money. The 28-year-old Duncan was optioned to Triple-A Memphis after Tuesday's game against Houston. He was batting .227 with five homers and 32 RBI for the Cardinals this season.

Chris Coste had the game-tying RBI double in the ninth and Miguel Tejada singled in the game-winning run, as Houston upended St. Louis, 4-3, and completed a three-game sweep of the Cardinals. Mark DeRosa homered, while Ryan Ludwick went 2-for-4 and scored for St. Louis, which swept Houston in three games at home earlier this season. Chris Carpenter started for the Cardinals and gave up two runs in eight innings before turning the ball over to Ryan Franklin who took the loss and the blown save, his second of the season. The Cardinals will be in Washington for a makeup game tonight starting at 5:45 on KSMO Radio.

Chone Figgins had four hits, including the go-ahead two-run double during a five-run uprising in the eighth inning, lifting the Angels to a 9-6 win over Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep and send the Royals to their season-high ninth consecutive defeat. Mark Teahen had a two-run single for the Royals, who have faltered thanks mostly to their bullpen. Kansas City pitchers have allowed 12 runs in the eighth inning alone during the current homestand. Brian Bannister yielded eight hits and four runs in a 6 2/3-inning start for KC. Ramon Colon (1-1) was tagged with the loss. The Royals will have the day off today.

Funeral services for Albert J. Krul of Salem, age 87, will be held today at 1:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be this morning from 11:00 until service time.  Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Freewill Baptist Church. 

Funeral services for Lola Luna of St. James, age 83, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Joey Gant of Bunker, age 40, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will begin at 4:00 this afternoon. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bunker Relay for Life or the Greeley Cemetery.

Funeral services for Iva Irene Herren of Salem, age 90, will be held Friday at 12:00 at Wilson Mortuary.  Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 until service time.  Interment will be in the Weese Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Donald Leo Pardee of St. James, age 89, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James and at 7:00 will be a Prayer Vigil. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.
