At the Dent County 4-H and FFA Expo Livestock Auction held this past Saturday, 47 buyers purchased 89 animals comprised of 56 hogs, 23 steers, 6 lambs, two pens of chickens, one pen of rabbits, one goat as well as 15 cured hams and four ribbons with the total coming to $173,663.55. The leading purchasers at the auction included Phil-Mart who bought three hogs, three steers, two cured hams, a pen of chickens and one lamb; Canoak, USA who was the high bid on five hogs and three steers; Salem Livestock who purchased two steers, two hogs, one ham and one lamb; Intercounty Electric who was the high bid on four hogs and a steer; Bank of Salem purchased three hogs, three steers and one ham; Interstate Regional Stockyards who purchased two hogs, one lamb, one goat and one ham; Jadwin Trim and Lumber who was the high bid on three hogs and a steer; and Rushing Construction Company who bought three hogs and half a steer with Wofford and Wofford Plumbing. The totals for all categories showed that the cured hams sold for $4,413.20, the chickens brought $823, the lambs brought $5,430.50, the rabbits brought $200, the hogs sold for $60,457.10, the goat brought $341, the steers brought $100,298.75 and the ribbons sold for $1,700. Sierra Hagler sold a hog to help the Preston Baker family with expenses to help him fight an unknown disease and it was sold eight times and combined with other donations, a total of $16,143 was raised. A big thank you goes out to all the bidders and buyers at the expo as well as all those who helped make the auction a huge success. 

The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5100, 5103, 5105, 6210, 6575, 6595 and 6665. He said materials would be added to and grading done on county road 6320 while brush would be cut on county road 4210. Purcell went on to say that repairs to the taillights and turn signals are being done to Dent County Dump Truck #117 and two trucks would be hauling brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4070, 4430 and 5340, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 4060. Larson reported work was being done on Dent County Truck #118 and a grader operator was putting grader blades and adding shims on grader #32. Larson said he received a call from West Paving from Sullivan and they are scheduled to be in Dent County on Monday, July 28th to do the chip and seal overlay to existing chip and seal roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported the commission received a request from Judge Brandi Baird to install a polycom in the Judicial Building courtroom. The Office of State Courts Administration will provide the $5,706.55 for the polycom from World Wide Technologies, Inc. The commission approved her request. Skiles also reported that all three commissioners attended a meeting with Healthy Dent County to discuss the Work Ready Communities program that is offered through Work Force Development. The application to participate in the program is due by November 1st and City Administrator Ray Walden is working on the application. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley says absentee voting continues until August 4th in the courthouse. She also said the county received a proclamation from the Military Order of Purple Hearts to make Dent County a “Purple Heart County.” Some counties like Texas and Phelps have already done this. The commission would like to find out more about the organization before making any decision. At the last meeting, Vernon Cornelius came in to discuss a railroad right-of-way in Crawford County on his property that was deeded to Dent County. He would like the county to issue a Quit-Claim deed for the right-of-way that is on his property. The commission will get this to Prosecutor Andrew Curley. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the meeting held June 17th will be the summary of operations and statistics reports for June. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then update the Board with the nursing and ancillary service reports. Administrator Dennis Pryor will then update the Board with an auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar, legislative issues and the hospital ER and Inpatient as well SMDH Rural Health Clinic patient satisfaction surveys, followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business will be the 2011 strategic planning goals update, the Community Health Needs Assessment and the Ozark Independent Health Alliance (OIHA). During new business the Board address purchases made for the hospital, the public tax meeting scheduled for August 19th at 5:45 pm and the election of officers. The monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public. 

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the roadwork that will take place in Dent County this week. Chip sealing of the roadway surface to extend the pavement life will take place on Route Z between Route K and the end of state maintenance today, on Route YY between Route E and the end of state maintenance on Wednesday, and Route BB between Route K and the end of state maintenance and Route ZZ between Route K and the end of state maintenance on Thursday. Roadway maintenance will take place on Route DD between Route H and the end of state maintenance all week. Route A in Dent and Shannon Counties will be reduced to one lane as work crews will partially overlay the roadway.  The section of roadway is located from just west of County Road 5620 in Dent County to Highway 19 in Shannon County. Weather permitting, the work will be performed now through Thursday.   Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near these areas. The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will start a two-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are 54-45 on the year and sit ½ game back of Milwaukee for the lead in the NL Central. You can hear tonight’s game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

Adam Dunn hit a two-run single in the first inning and Chris Sale did the rest as the Chicago White Sox eked past the struggling Kansas City Royals, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game series Jeremy Guthrie (5-9) settled down after a rough start but still took the loss, having allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over six frames. Danny Valencia singled in Kansas City’s lone run. The Royals and Chicago White Sox play again tonight, with first pitch set for 7:10 this evening.

Funeral services for Mary Lou Jones, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00.Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
