According to the Crawford County Sheriff's Department, a shooting occurred Saturday afternoon around 2:00 near Meramec Estate Lane that left one man dead and another in custody. The area in question is in a remote area that is popular with floaters off Route T between Steelville and Cuba, west of the Highway 19 bridge. It was reported that the victim was apparently floating on the river when he became involved in a dispute with another man, possibly over someone throwing rocks, but that has not yet been verified. The shooter remained on the scene after the shooting and was taken into custody by the Crawford County Sheriff's Department. The body was taken to the Huston Funeral Home in Steelville. No names have yet been released of the victim or shooter.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday evening for their regular monthly meeting. At the meeting, Superintendent Steve Carvajal said that school has qualified for a Missouri Foundation of Health Grant for nutrition that will provide $10,000 for each building, plus add a full time position at no cost to the district as the employee will be paid through the Council For a Healthy Dent County in a joint venture. The final approval of the project won’t be until October. Carvajal reported that Lisa Hester has made a donation of $5,000 for the preschool that helped with classroom preparation as 30 children have already signed up. He said that the new football scoreboard paid for by the Judson Young Foundation has been delivered and will be installed by the City of Salem in the area where the flagpole currently stands. He said the flagpole would be moved a bit and straightened. Carvajal stated that he applied for and received the Wal-Mart Grant for $1,000 that was used to reward students taking the ACT test last year, and is also taking bids on a sprinkler system at the baseball field. Money for that system would be taken from the funds earned from the sale of tickets to the Salem baseball game at Busch Stadium. He added that Michael Helm has painted Tiger logos on the girl’s softball dugouts, the football press box and on the city tennis courts. Carvajal also told the board that Richard Beckitt wants to begin a Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at Salem. He then went on to discuss the improvements being made at the school. He stated the demolition has been a very clean process and is about 90% complete except for the removal. The board approved holding the open houses for the new school year on August 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 at the William Lynch Elementary School and from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Upper Elementary. Then on August 13th, open houses will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 at the Jr. High and Sr. High. The Board set the tax hearing at 5:15 and the regular board meeting for Tuesday, August 13th at 5:30 so that the board could tour the facilities at the open house. Elementary School Principal Kriste Crocker explained that the new pre-school would be called “Tiger Tots” and the classroom would be right next door to her office. Joey Crossgrove will be the instructor and she will follow the Highscope Curriculum. Each session will be 2 ½ hours per day and there will be two sessions each day. Because there are 30 children signed up, the board approved hiring a pre-school aide, otherwise there could only be 20 students. Crocker did say that transportation may be an issue, but the school is working on that at this time. In bids, the board awarded the milk bid to Hiland Dairy, the bread bid to Flowers Baking Company, the fuel bid to MFA and the pest control bid to Integrity Pest Control. The board approved the revisions to the A+ Handbook of which one was required by state statute, one was just a clarification and one was a change in policy. The board approved the MSBA Board policy 2013A updates, approved listing excess kitchen cafeteria tables as surplus property to sell, and approved the surplus property bids on extra tech parts and equipment. The board accepted the resignation of Assistant Band Director Hilary Alexander Winter, Tessa Morrison from Food Service and Debbie Hogan as a High School Secretary. They approved the Developmental Preschool Lease for the same amount as last year, and approved a change to the discipline section of the athletic policy before going into closed session.

Allen Craig made a home run robbing catch to make the final out of the game as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres in the rubber match of a three-game set. David Freese had two hits and lined a two-run double in the third inning that proved to be the difference. Adam Wainwright (13-5) gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks in eight innings. He struck out seven and became the National League's first to 13 wins. The Cardinals have the day off today.
The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday because of a lingering hamstring injury. The move is retroactive to July 12th and the Cardinals will fill the roster spot by purchasing the contract of Brock Peterson from Triple-A Memphis. Peterson, 29, was leading the Pacific Coast League with 22 home runs and 66 RBI while batting for a .306 average with Memphis.
Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks belted solo homers as the Detroit Tigers averted a three-game series sweep by the Kansas City Royals with a 4-1 victory at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position en route to their sixth loss in eight games, with Miguel Tejada's solo homer in the second inning accounting for the club's lone run. The Royals will start a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles tonight.
The St. Louis Blues and restricted free-agent forward Chris Stewart avoided arbitration on Friday, agreeing to a two-year contract. The 25-year-old Stewart, who was taken 18th overall in the 2006 draft, played in all 48 games last season, registering 18 goals and 18 assists.

Funeral services for Ollie Mae Cunningham of Steelville and formerly of Bourbon, age 88, will be held today at 1:00 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bourbon. Interment will be in the Bourbon Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Paul Anthony Mesey of Salem, age 44, will be held today at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services for Ricky Willis of St. James, age 53, will be held Tuesday at 12:00 noon at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Corinth Cemetery in Dent County.
Memorial services for Barbara Loretta Arnett of Salem, age 73, will be held Tuesday evening at 6:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 until time for the memorial service. Interment will be at North Lawn Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Project Win.
