The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Friday, July 16^th at 1:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to 215 West Fourth Street to the Fourth Street Mall in reference to the theft of a purse and its contents. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown had stolen a purse and contents. Further investigation revealed an individual was attempting to cash a check at local businesses, which had been stolen from the purse. This led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem woman for the theft and forgery. She was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. At 2:00 p.m. that same afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting incident. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 16-year old Salem female juvenile for stealing $39.93 of merchandise. The merchandise was returned to Wal-Mart. The female juvenile was released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. Then at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was sent to the 1500 block of Highway 19 South in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown stole numerous tolls including a Skill brand 18 volt drill, circular saw, SawZall, chargers and batteries, screwdrivers and numerous other tools from a tool box in the back of a truck parked at the residence. At 6:30 p.m. that evening, an officer was detailed to 203 North Grand to the Salem Treatment Center in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 25-year old Warrensburg woman had assaulted an employee of the Salem Treatment Center. She was taken into custody, issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Anyone with any information regarding the theft is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their 1st Budget Workshop Tuesday evening at the district administrative offices boardroom, with over a dozen people in attendance including administration, board members, principals and teachers. The purpose of the workshop, according to Superintendent Cindy Rumpf, was to explain the differences between the four different fund accounts used by R-80. Fund I, also referred to as the operating or incidental fund, is the fund everything is paid out of except for certified staff salaries. Money from Fund I can be transferred to Fund II or Fund IV. Fund II also referred to as the teacher's fund, is the fund the certified staff salaries is paid from and tuition such as for RTI in Rolla. This fund cannot end the year in the red and money from Fund II can be transferred into Fund I. Fund III referred to as debt service, can only be used for construction projects, not any salaries, and may not receive funds from anything except taxpayer debt service. Fund IV known as the capital projects fund, is used only to fund capital projects, it can not be used to pay salaries, and is limited as to how revenue is received in this fund. Fund IV can be used for big ticket items and once money is in this fund, it has to stay in this fund. Rumpf stated that the Budget Workshops would be held the Tuesday before the monthly meetings throughout the year. The Budget Workshop in August will be on Revenue and is open to the public.

The Dent County Pageants for Jr Miss Dent and Miss Dent County will be held on Wednesday, August 11^th the first night of the Dent County Fall Festival at the Commons beginning at 6:00 pm at the stage area. The Jr. Miss Dent County Contest is for girls from 11 to 14 years of age and participants include Marissa Blaylock, Shelby Carr, Elaina Goff, Makenna Farrar, Amanda Green, Audrey Hailey, Shaylee Harrison, Anndy Hill, Branna Piatt, Haley Siers, Deandra Sullins, and Katelyn Usery.and there will be one winner, one runner-up and one Jr Miss Congeniality chosen. For the Miss Dent Contest for girls 15 to 20 years of age participants include Kristen Bettigrew, Brittany Collins, Ashley Crocker, Kayla Gott, Sierra Hagler, Chandra Sullins, Emily Sullivan, Ryanne Tripp and Kala Trolinger. The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29^th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies.
