One hundred forty-five animals were exhibited Friday at the third annual 4-H and FFA Expo held at Oakwood Mule Farm. Tyler Martin, 2012 University of Missouri Graduate and MU Judging Team member judged the various market and breeding classes. The 8:00 swine show began with Shelby Martin exhibiting the Champion Breeding Gilt, while Kaden Garrison exhibited the Reserve Champion. The 60 market hogs were divided into nine classes. Class 1 was won by Tucker Smith’s 230-pound hog, class 2 by Allie Fleener’s 239 pounder, class 3 by Clayton Headrick’s 250 lb. pig, class 4 by Shelby Martin’s 265 pounder, class 5 by Wyatt Martin’s 271 pound market hog, class 6 by Christopher Knight’s 277 pound gilt, class 7 by Avery Raulston’s 289 pound pig, class 8 by Caleb Smith’s 311 pounder and class 9 by Lydia Whitaker’s 326 pound market hog. Shelby Martin exhibited the Champion Market Hog and the Reserve Champion went to Avery Raulston. In showmanship competition Camryn Pryor won the Senior Division, while Bailey Martin won the Junior Division. The afternoon judging began with the 1:30 sheep and goat show. Zach Schafer exhibited the Champion and Reserve Champion Ewe, Champion Pair and Champion Flock, while in the goat show Kaden Garrison had both the Champion and Reserve Champion Doe. In the market classes Zach Schafer had the Champion Market Lamb, which weighed 129 pounds, while brother Austin Schafer exhibited the 150-pound Reserve Champion. Zach again returned to the show ring to exhibit the Champion Market Goat, which weighed in at 62 pounds. Showmanship awards in the Sheep division went to Erica Rushing in the Senior Division and Cole Elliott in the Junior Division. Senior Goat Showmanship went Zach Schafer, while Kaden Garrison won the Junior Division. The 3:00 Small Animal Show saw Jordan McElvy exhibit the Champion Pen of Market Meat Rabbits, while Tiffany Lucerne exhibited the Champion Pen of Market Meat Chickens. Senior Poultry Showmanship Award went to Becky Paul and Tyffany Lucerne earned the Junior Showmanship Award, while Allison Manthey won Junior Rabbit Showmanship. Brad Buttram, Hollister, Missouri Agriculture Instructor, judged the small animals.  The 4:00 Cattle Show began with the Dairy Division. Dalton Smith’s Holstein Heifer was named Champion, while his Holstein Cow won the Reserve Champion Ribbon.  In the Hereford Beef Heifer Division Texas Nall’s was Champion and Moriah Cramer’s was Reserve Champion. Nall also exhibited the Champion Hereford Bull, while Dalton Smith showed the Champion AOB (All Other Breeds) Heifer. The Supreme Champion Heifer was won by Texas Nall’s Hereford. In the Commercial Heifer Division Brook Adams took Champion and Cody Bell won Reserve Champion.  The twenty-three market steers were divided in to six classes with weights ranging from 1015 pounds to 1510 pounds. The winner in class 1 winner was Cody Bell’s 1065 pound steer, class 2 Texas Nall’s 1215 pounder, class 3 Taylor Bell’s 1275 pound calf, class 4 Sierra Hagler’s 1365 pound steer, class 5 Zach Schafer’s 1385 pound calf and Class 6 Dylan Thompson calf that weighed in at 1510 pounds. Dylan’s steer topped the Average Daily Gain with 5.37 pounds per day. Judge Martin selected Zach Schafer’s Red Angus Cross as the Champion and Jacob Smallwood’s Hereford steer as the Reserve Champion. Beef Showmanship competition was keen in both the Senior and Junior Divisions with Tyler Wofford winning the Senior Beef Award, while first time exhibitor Patrick Cahill won the Junior Beef Showmanship.

The Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will conduct a meeting, called by Chairmen Jerry Craig, tonight at the Salem Community Center, located at 1200 West Rolla Road, beginning at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be to consider a conditional use permit for 1300 West Scenic Rivers Blvd., for a radio tower belonging to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, approval of the June 2nd Planning & Zoning public hearing minutes and public meeting minutes. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their meeting at the Salem Community Center at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, at the last meeting City Attorney Seay stated that he spoke with Superintendent Steve Carvajal about the shooting range use by the FFA. Seay asked to speak with the school’s attorney who will be presenting an agreement to review. He will present the agreement to the Board. Also in unfinished business, City Clerk Mary Happel and Building Inspector Jarred Brown will update the Board on the current standing of the trailer court located at 701 East Center, whether to issue a business license to Richard and June Cole for the trailer court. Jerry Craig will then report on the Planning & Zoning Commission meeting held prior to the Alderman meeting. Alderwoman Molly Zettel will report on the Utility Committee meeting, and City Administrator Ray Walden will report on issues involving the city and give updates on current projects. Mayor J.J. Tune will then give his report. The Board will then adjourn the regular meeting and vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts. The meetings of the Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners and City of Salem Board of Alderman are open to the public.

The Lady Tigers played their last shootout of the summer Thursday and Friday, playing in the Licking Summer Camp. Salem played six games over the course of the two days. On Thursday the Lady Tigers played four games, and Salem finished the day 4-0 by beating St. Francis Borgia's JV 61-23; Gibault, Illinois 44-23; Brussells, Illinois 39-27; and Delta 40-10. Salem continued to find success on Friday, as they began the day with a 41-23 victory over Lansing, Kansas and ended the day and summer schedule with a 44-31 win over Father Tolton.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers topped the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3. Peter Bourjos cracked a two-run homer among his two hits for St. Louis, which had won seven of its last nine games coming in. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Jon Lester continued his recent dominance on the hill and the Boston Red Sox kept inching back toward respectability by completing a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with Sunday's 6-0 victory at Fenway Park. The Royals have dropped six of seven and are mired in a 9-17 slump and have fallen below .500 at 48-49 and sit seven games behind the front-running Tigers. The Royals will be in Chicago tonight to start a series with the White Sox.

Funeral services for Pearl Virginia Norris of St. James, age 85, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral services for Mary Lou Jones, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00.Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
