The Dent County Commissioners held their quarterly nightly meeting Tuesday evening in the Associates Courtroom at the Judicial Building with a hand full of people in attendance. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles reported that in the General Revenue, sales tax from January through July 15th this year, was up $4,705 and year-to-date the amount was up $11,600 over the totals for 2009. Skiles reported that expenses were down about $188,471 due to not having to fix any leaking roofs and flooding compared to last year. Skiles also reported that all current office holders were keeping expenses down and staying inline with their budgets for the year. Skiles did report that the Commission is still exploring their options for keeping a gazebo on the courthouse lawn. District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that as of June 29^th, Cleverstone had finished the chip and seal projects and did a good job. Purcell also said that as of June 21^st, the CART fund is $7,392.47 ahead of 2009 and the Road and Bridge Departments continue to watch their budgets very closely. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that chip and seal projects in his district were also completed. Larson said that the budget in District 2 is also being watched closely and other than a few line items that are FEMA related, the FEMA projects were anywhere from 90 to 95% completed from last year. Larson said that as of June 30^th crews had just finished in the Boss and Sligo area. After the areas had received a substantial amount of rain this weekend, Larson sent two graders back to the Boss area and crews would have to start all over in the Sligo area. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, damage to a vehicle, a juvenile after curfew, and a traffic violation. On Tuesday, July 13^th at 1:30 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a green 1994 Dodge Spirit parked near East Truman Street and took a digital camera valued $215.00. Later that afternoon at 1:39 p.m., an officer was detailed to the 100 block of West Hunt Street in reference to damage done to a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the back glass on a blue 1997 Ford Aerostar van. The value of the glass is $250.00. On Wednesday, July 14^th at 12:50 a.m., an officer made contact with a juvenile male of Salem after curfew. The juvenile was found to be in possession of marijuana and cigarettes. He was detained and released to a parent. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. Later that day at 12:40 p.m., a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, a 56 year-old male of Salem, for driving while drugged and possession of a synthetic narcotic. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. The sign on the storefront said “Craig’s Taxidermy” and the hunters who brought their prized deer, turkey and fish got them back stuffed and mounted. But they also got secretly recorded. And ultimately, many of them were busted for allegedly breaking Missouri wildlife laws. The Department of Conservation announced that it had discovered 425 wildlife violations committed by 68 people who brought animals into the business in the rural southern Missouri town of Birch Tree. The state Conservation Department set up the undercover taxidermy shop in 2008 after receiving numerous complaints about illegal hunting in the surrounding areas. As it turned out, 62 percent of the wildlife brought in for mounting had been killed illegally in some manner. The cases are being turned over to prosecutors in seven counties including Crawford, Dent, Miller, Howell, Iron, Oregon and Shannon, where the hunting occurred. The violations included deer, turkey, various animals for their fur, fish and migratory birds. Agents seized 240 items including 90 mounted deer heads or antler racks; about 20 various smaller animals, 70 frog legs, one rattlesnake and 16 firearms.

The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29^th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies.
