The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that a culvert would be replaced on Dent County Road 4155, and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2400, 2410 and 5080. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that the entire District 2 crew would be on Dent County Roads 3260 and 3280 patching chip and seal.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the Commission received two proposals from Anderson and Associates regarding the judicial annex. Anderson and Associates is an engineering firm out of Rolla that specializes in environmental issues and assists in the process of buildings becoming compliant with ADA standards. The first proposal was for the environmental inspection of the building along with a summary report, which came to the total cost of $550.00. The second proposal was for a design that Anderson and Associates would draw up to make the building ADA compliant by enhancing the restrooms and doorways, and the amount of that came to $2,000.00, which does not include the additional costs of materials and labor. The Commission plans on discussing this more with Anderson and Associates before a decision is made. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened Friday, July 18^th in the afternoon at 2:36 in Dent County on Highway 19 about four miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 50-year old Judy Gott of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19. The accident occurred as the Cobalt crested a hill and attempted to travel around a vehicle turning into a private drive. The Cobalt began to skid, losing control and traveled off the right side of the roadway. Gott suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Cobalt sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00. During the hearing of persons, Libby Sanders representing the Board of Trustees for the Bonebrake Center, wants to read a statement concerning the proposed sewer construction involving the Center, and Laurie Walker wants to address two issues involving her neighbor concerning the household and yard that are extremely unsanitary and the negligent care of their dog. After approval of the consent agenda, Alderman Bill Riley, Jim Jackson, and Kenneth Nash would like to discuss items involving the City of Salem along with Jim McDaniels and he would also a number of other issues such as the possibility of new bridges, weed eating the ditches at the City Park, ditch renovation at the roadside park on Highway 19, drop boxes on Carty & Hawkins Street, and more items. Mayor Gary Brown will also give his comments on items involving the City. The State of Missouri’s Emergency Management Agency notified the City of Salem that the current ordinance concerning flood damage prevention within the City is outdated and needs to be updated as the City is a participating member of the National Flood Insurance Program, therefore; during the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3137, an ordinance setting out provisions for flood damage prevention within the City will be addressed, and Bill #3138, an ordinance to authorize the mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and Waste Corporation of Missouri, Inc. for the collection and disposal of residential and commercial solid waste, will also be addressed. In new and miscellaneous business, City Clerk, Mary Happel will present budget adjustments from the 2007/2008 budget for approval, there will be a report on a meeting between the Mayor, Superintendent Emory and Archer Engineers concerning the sewer treatment plant permit and requirements that are needed and have to be done by August 9^th. The Board will also address a policy change on work orders, involving permission being given from the household owner in case they are at work or out of town. The Mayor and City Clerk are asking permission to attend the MML Conference Springfield to be held September 7^th through the 11^th. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Representatives from Missouri’s hospitals traveled to Washington, D.C., recently to meet with members of Missouri’s congressional delegation and offer their views on issues affecting rural hospitals. While in Washington, D.C., hospital executives and board members including Salem Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor and Board member Joe Brand, thanked Missouri’s lawmakers for their work in blocking rules harmful to the state’s hospitals. The delegation urged continued congressional support for the rural health safety net and action to maintain the integrity of the Medicare physician reimbursement system. In addition, the group discussed congressional action limiting physician self-referral to specialty hospitals and legislation sponsored by Representative Jo Ann Emerson that would amend Medicare’s hospital prescription drug discount program. The Missouri Hospital Association is a not-for-profit membership association in Jefferson City that represents 151 Missouri hospitals.

Aaron Miles' grand slam home run in the ninth gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 9-5 win and complete a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres. Troy Glaus went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer while Rick Ankiel and Albert Pujols each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won five straight. Brad Thompson (2-2) got the win while Jaime Garcia gave up three runs on five hits over five innings in his first career start. St. Louis starts a four-game set with Milwaukee tonight starting at 6:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio. The Cardinals remain two games behind the Chicago Cubs in the Central Division and made it to 14 games over .500 for the first time this year.

Esteban German had the final say in an offensive clinic, knocking in the game-winning runs on a double in the eighth inning to give the Royals an 8-7 victory over the White Sox. German finished the day 3-for-3 with the two all-important runs batted in and a run scored. David DeJesus chipped in with three RBI and Mike Aviles added three hits to give the Royals their fifth victory in seven games. Brian Bannister left with the lead despite going only three innings. The righty gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking one. Ramon Ramirez (1-1) got the win despite giving up the lead in the seventh, surrendering two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work, while recording all of his outs via strikeout. Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save of the season. Detroit will be at Kansas City tonight.

The St. Louis Rams signed defensive end Chris Long, the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft, to a long-term contract Sunday. Terms were not disclosed but The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the contract covers at least five years. The deal will allow Long, a 6-foot-3, 279-pound end from Virginia, to report to Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin by next Thursday, when the Rams open training camp. The son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long, the younger Long is expected to start at right defensive end next season for St. Louis, which finished an NFC-worst 3-13 in 2007.
