The Dent County Commissioners held their quarterly night meeting Tuesday evening at Judicial Building with just a hand full of people present and no one was in attendance from the public sector. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that in the General Revenue Fund year-to-date, revenues are down $68,000 due to interest being down $13,000, and the public administered fees are up $9,500 from last year. Expenses are also down $93,577 due to $15,000 less in capital expenses, and the workman's comp and health insurance are down $11,000 compared to this time last year. In the Road and Bridge Department, it was reported that a lot of repairs are being done in house and year-to-date as expenses are at 48.6% and in line with the budget. The Road and Bridge Department continues to watch expenses very closely especially those related to petroleum and white rock. Last year the county was at 99% compared to 33.2% for this year. In the Law Enforcement LEST, sales tax revenue is down $50,800 and expenses are down $50,000 for the Sheriff's office and the Dent County Jail operations. The Assessors Office budget showed revenue is down $4,600 and expenses are also down about $6,900. In the 911 Fund, revenue is down $1,100 and expenses are up $1,000. It was noted that most counties continue to see the 911 charges dropping, but those for Dent County continue to see little increases upwards. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident occurred at 9:28 Tuesday morning, July 19^th in Dent County on Highway 32 about a quarter of a mile north of Route H in Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Volkswagon Beetle driven by 49-year old Hiawatha Myers of Salem was traveling southbound and was attempting to slow down to make a right turn and was struck from behind by a 2005 Volkswagon Beetle driven by 53-year old Richard Hogan of Salem. Myers and an occupant, 28-year old Troy Myers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem EMS. Both Volkswagon Beetles sustained moderate damage and were towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Sunday, July 10^th at 4:15 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a subject shoplifting from Wal-Mart. That investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem man for stealing $14.50 worth of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Later that night at 8:00, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a report of child abuse. The investigation revealed that the parents are separated and during a visit time with one of the parents, the child received bruises. Later on that night at 8:20, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a flower arrangement valued at $47 being stolen from a gravesite at Cedar Grove Cemetery between May 30^th and July 10^th. On Monday, July 11^th an officer made a traffic stop for a traffic violation. The investigation made during the stop led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem woman for a warrant from Jefferson County. She posted bond on the warrant and was released to appear in court. Dollar General Literacy Foundation has approved a grant of $1,573.00 to provide the Rolla Adult Education and Literacy Program with matching funds to purchase consumable books for students to use at class sites in Rolla, St. James, Cuba, Vienna, and Salem.  These books will make it possible for students to take home study materials.  This should help students in the adult basic education classes to progress more quickly toward their education goals, whether that is just improving basic skills or preparing for the G.E.D. exam. Before receiving this grant from Dollar General, students were unable to take books home because the program has limited funds for the purchase of instructional materials and if someone would drop out of the program and not return materials, the program would be unable to replace the books.  Now, with this grant, the program will purchase select materials on various topics in which students would benefit from more study.  These materials will be available for students to take home.  Some instructional materials will be reproducible and will allow the students to write on them and keep them for independent study at home. The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Tuesday, July 12^th at 2:45 in the afternoon, a call came in for a grass fire on North Main Street in Salem. A total of six firefighters responded and put out the fire. The scene was under control and the units were back in service at 2:56 that same afternoon. The scene was under control and the units were back in service at 3:15. On Wednesday, July 13^th at call came in at 9:04 in the evening to County Road 5080 to a family dwelling. A total of six firefighters responded to provide medical assistance for EMS crews. The scene was under control and units were back in service at 9:31.

Jose Reyes returned to the lineup Tuesday night and went 2-for-5 with a run scored, helping the New York Mets take a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series. Lance Berkman hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Cardinals. Kyle Lohse's (8-7) recent struggles continued, as he dropped his third straight start after giving up four runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He also drove in the other run for St. Louis. The Cards and Mets play again tonight at 5:35 on KSMO Radio.

Matt Treanor's two-run single in the sixth inning was the difference as the Kansas City Royals took a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the middle portion of a three-game series. Danny Duffy (2-4) struggled early in the game, but settled in to throw seven strong innings for the win. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks as the Royals snapped their three-game losing streak. Joakim Soria faced the minimum in the ninth to earn his 17th save of the year. The Royals and White Sox play again today.
