The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting last evening in Council Chambers. The board heard from the Salem Planning and Zoning Commission about their meeting on July 6^th where they discussed the annexation of land in the Brandon Heights Subdivision into the city that is owned by the AD-PAR Construction Co., and recommended that the land be annexed as R-1 Residential. The Board agreed to draw up an ordinance annexing the land. Mayor Brown passed on the unfinished business of an appointment of an East Ward Aldermen to fill the unexpired term of Jim Jackson. In other business, Bill Huffman, Building Inspector, gave a report on the R & C Family Mobile Home Park on East Center Street. The park has received a notice to correct some items in the park, such as steps for the mobile homes, underpinning, fixing broken windows, etc. They have thirty days to fix homes that are occupied, and 60 days to fix those that are unoccupied. The end of the 30 days is Friday, July 23rd. The Board agreed to hold their license for at least sixty days or until these items are completed, which also includes various nuisance violations. Mayor Gary Brown gave his report last night. The Animal Welfare Society has purchased land on Route H to build a new shelter. The shelter is expected to be completed within two years. Brown stated that the city needs to decide if they want to operate their own facility or contract with the Animal Welfare Society to use their shelter when it is built. The city is already responsible for expenses at the current location in the Industrial Park, such as heat, electric, gas, water, etc. Mayor Brown also discussed the recyclables trailer at the Upper Elementary School. The city is picking up three times the amount of recyclables it has in the past. Brown stated he would apply for a grant for another trailer and more bins. The trailer is available for tin cans (not aluminum) and #1 and #2 plastics.  In other business, work being done around the city includes: replacing a water and sewer line on Hunt Street; a handicap ramp and sidewalk at the Al Brown Fields; and sidewalks and storm water work in the Great Oaks Subdivision. The Board approved the re-appointment of Madonna Mosley for a term of four years to the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority.  The Board then approved bills and went into closed session.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4122, 4124 and 5400 and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5170 and 5190. Purcell also said that maintenance would be done on grader #26 and a crew member would be picking up a load of oil for chip and seal repair. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that the Sligo and Boss areas received a substantial amount of rain and water was reported over Dent County Road 4030. Larson said crews would be grading Dent County Roads 2500 and 2540 and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4010, 4380 and 4480. Larson also reported that a stop sign had been stolen from the junction of Dent County Roads 2520 and 2530 and that would be replaced.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Interop Solutions were in town at the Dent County Fire Station preparing for the interoperable communication demonstration that will start today at 11:00. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone of the Commissions quarterly night meeting that will be this evening at 7:00 in the Associate Courtroom of the Judicial Building. Margie Southards of Classic Buildings came by the meeting to discuss the gazebo that is on the courthouse lawn. The Commission is interested in making the gazebo a permanent fixture, but also wanted prices on a larger gazebo.  The current gazebo is a 12ft octagon that is painted with a metal roof and could be purchased for $4,400, a 10 by 16 foot gazebo that is stained with a cedar roof is available for $5,000 and a 12 foot octagon that is stained with a metal roof could be purchased for $4,216.  The Commission said they would look over the options and get back with Southards in a few weeks.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29^th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies.
