Albert Pujols crushed a two-run homer as part of a five-run fifth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals overcame an early deficit to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-4, in the opener of a four-game series at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig and Skip Schumaker clubbed back-to-back home runs in the 5th inning as well. The Cardinals' Blake Hawksworth (4-5) was touched for three runs in the first inning, but the home team chipped away at the deficit before moving ahead in the fifth. The Cardinals and Phillies play tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Jason Kendall lofted a game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning and Alberto Callaspo singled home the winning run, as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat Toronto, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Yuniesky Betancourt scored a run and knocked in two for the Royals as they ended their six game losing streak. Royals’ starter Kyle Davies allowed three runs on a season-high 10 hits over seven innings. Kyle Farnsworth got the win for the Royals even though he gave up a run in the 10th inning. The Royals and Blue Jays play again tonight.
St. Louis Cardinals have recalled pitcher Fernando Salas from Memphis (PCL); and have optioned pitcher Evan MacLane to Memphis.
St. Louis Blues have re-signed forward Ryan Reaves to a one-year, two-way contract.
Long-time Kansas City wide receiver Eddie Kennison signed a contract Monday to announce his retirement as a member of the Chiefs. Kennison spent seven of his 13 NFL seasons with the Chiefs, catching 321 passes for 5,230 yards with 25 touchdowns in 91 games from 2001-07. He also played for St. Louis (1996-98, 2008), New Orleans (1999), Chicago (2000) and Denver (2001). In 179 career games, including 153 starts, the Lake Charles, Louisiana native and LSU product finished with 548 receptions, 8,345 yards and 42 touchdowns. He was selected by the Rams in the first round of the 1996 draft.
