An accident happened on Thursday, July 16^th at 11:25 pm in Dent County on Highway 32 about three miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Dodge 1500 driven by 21-year old Sean Stephens of Salem, was traveling eastbound on Highway 32. The Dodge 1500 traveled off the right side of the roadway, then traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned several times down an embankment. Stephens suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Salem Hospital by ambulance. A passenger, 20-year old Ryan Nash of Salem, received moderate injuries and was also transported to the Salem Hospital by ambulance. Both were wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge 1500 was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 7:05 Friday night in Texas County on Pursifull Street about four miles east of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 18 year-old Matthew Britt of Licking ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned partially ejecting the driver. Britt suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac to St. Johns in Springfield. An occupant in the Cavalier, 22 year-old Anthony Lee of Houston, suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital. Neither of them were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Cavalier was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by A1 Towing.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers. Prior to the meeting, the Planning and Zoning will meet to consider the annexation and zoning of 300 South Dilworth, owned by Ralph and Laura Yohai. They will also discuss a subdivision of 402 North Water, owned by the City of Salem; and consider a conditional use permit for a used car lot at 404 West Fourth Street on property owned by Wayne Woods. At the regular meeting under the hearing of persons, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will report on the public hearing held prior to the meeting. The aldermen will then discuss the bids for the 2,400 yards of topsoil, and also the bids for cutting, bailing, and removal of hay for 2009 on 18.2 acres of land located between Highway 19 South and Highway HH, and at the Salem Municipal Airport. After the consent agenda, City Engineer Bill Huffman will report on the street width of Sligo Street at Highway 32/72 to determine whose obligation it was to cut the tall weeds by the street at the storage units. There will then be a discussion about user fees at the Salem Freedom Activity Center, pool, and other programs, which was brought up at the last meeting. The board will also discuss a new pay scale for the mechanic. Sean Curley will present the results of the Planning and Zoning meeting. Aldermen Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash, and Brad Nash will each discuss miscellaneous items. Mayor Gary Brown will then discuss the request of a donation from the City by the American Legion so they can pour a concrete pad at the Legion for a WWII tank that was donated to them and then give his comments. The mayor will then request that the October 5^th Board of Alderman meeting be moved to Friday October 2^nd at 10:00 am due to the annual MML Conference October 5^th-7^th. After the bills are approved, the board will then adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Registration for the upcoming school year for the Salem R-80 Junior and Senior High School parents will be Monday-Thursday, August 10^th-13^th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. All seventh to ninth grade students will register in the Junior High library and tenth through twelfth grade students will register in the Senior High library. The enrollment schedule is: on Monday, August 10^th all new high school students along with 10^th-12^th grade students, all new junior high students and all 7^th-9^th grade students can register. On Tuesday, August 11^th all new high school students along with seniors and seventh grade students. On Wednesday, August 12^th all juniors and eighth grade students can register, and on Thursday, August 13^th all sophomores and ninth grade students can register.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Graveside services for Robert Quinten (R.Q.) Hamilton of Salem, age 91, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Shannon County. Memorials may be made to the Timber Volunteer Fire Department. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for James N. “Jimmy” Delcour of Salem, age 59, will be held Tuesday at 100 in the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors.

Funeral services for Obe Wofford of Licking, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Boone Creek Baptist Church in Licking. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Research.

Funeral services for Grace Boatman Wilkerson of Salem, age 94, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8;00 Tuesday night. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Full Gospel Church.

Funeral services for William Henry “Jack” Davis of Imperial, formerly of Davisville, age 88, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of the ABC Memorial Fund for the Davisville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Stephen P. Bullock, Jr. of Brighton, age 35, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Miles Cemetery in St. James with Full Military Honors. 

Funeral services for Lola Luna of St. James, age 83, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
