Joel Pineiro was solid on the hill and helped his own cause with a two-run double, as St. Louis edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Pineiro (8-9) allowed a run on five hits over seven innings. The veteran right-hander struck out three and did not walk a batter. St. Louis got all the offense it needed in the bottom of the fourth. Albert Pujols singled to start the inning. Then a pair of two-out walks came back to haunt the Arizona starter as Pineiro ripped a double down the left-field line. The Cards will be in Houston tonight starting at 6:45 on KSMO.

The St. Louis Cardinals activated utilityman Mark DeRosa from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, optioning infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir to Triple-A Memphis to make a spot for him.

Gabe Gross had a run-scoring double and drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, as the Tampa Bay Rays held on to beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, and sweep the three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Alberto Callaspo had three hits and two RBI, while Billy Butler finished 4- for-5 for Kansas City, which has dropped six in a row and eight of nine. Luke Hochevar turned in a solid outing but pitched to a no-decision, giving up a pair of runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high nine batters without issuing a walk. The Royals will host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Gil Meche was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to a nagging lower left back injury. The move is retroactive to July 12. The move will cause the rotation to be changed slightly. Sidney Ponson, who had been pitching for Triple-A Omaha before being recalled to KC on Thursday, is scheduled to start on Monday with Bruce Chen most likely taking Meche's turn on Tuesday.

The St. Louis Rams signed cornerback Bradley Fletcher, a third-round choice from this year's draft. Fletcher, chosen 66th overall, played at the University of Iowa and had five interceptions while starting 21 of 46 career games. He started all 13 contests last season and had three interceptions and 60 tackles, all while helping a defense that led the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing 13.0 points per game.
