The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4180, 5600 and 6600; and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5390. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that a culvert would be installed on Dent County Road 2200 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2340. Larson also said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 4280 and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2500 and 2540. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Purcell sat in on a conference call with Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson on Thursday concerning the National Park Services closing off access to Current River at the mouth of Sinkin Creek. On Friday, Skiles and Purcell, along with two representatives from Emerson’s office, traveled to the mouth of Sinkin Creek to survey the area closed off. The park service has placed boulders in the roadway prohibiting camperscampers from camping along the riverbank.  Pictures were taken and sent to Emerson’s office and she will be checking into why this area was closed off and with no public knowledge. Dent Count Clerk Angie Curley reported that she applied for a grant to help with polling place accessibility funds and she received a letter from the Secretary of State’s office stating that the county had been awarded $2,400 in grant money through the Help America Vote Act Fund.  The Commission agreed to appoint Mike Thompson to the Board of Equalization to replace Judy Halbrook who is stepping down, and the Commissioners will be attending today’s BOE meeting at 2:00. At 10:00 bids were opened for the year 2010 audit that is required, because the county received over $500,000 in federal money income due to disaster reimbursement from FEMA from the May 8^th, 2009 storm. Only one bid was submitted and that was from Verkamp and Malone for $10,000 - $12,000. A set dollar was not determined, because the company said there could be unexpected circumstances, therefore the Commission did not make a decision right away.  Chris Shaver came into to discuss the cul-de-sac in Adams Subdivision on Dent County Road 4170. He said that it’s not as wide as it used to be and it’s hard for busses and anyone pulling a trailer to turn around. The Commission will meet for their quarterly evening meeting on Tuesday at 6:00 in the Judicial Building Courtroom.  The next regular meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

 

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board approved the request from the Grace Community Church to close Water Street from Franklin to the south end of the parking lot on August 1^st through the 4^th for an evening Vacation Bible School from 6:00 to 9:00. The board approved the low bid of $5,995 from American Auto from Springfield for a 12,000 pound service lift and a 4,000 pound rolling jack and air supply kit. The bid will be reviewed by Superintendent Ben Bryson to make sure that the bids received are all equal. Superintendent Bryson said that fuel bids for the airport could not be submitted in writing because the price of fuel changes each evening between 7:00 and 9:00 at night. He said that he could call and get bids and take the lowest price. He said that the last price he was quoted was about $4.75 a gallon with an additional 51 cents in delivery charges and taxes. He also said that delivery charges could be reduced if Salem splits a load with another airport. The board approved him getting phone bids. After the consent agenda, Public Works Director Bill Huffman said that there were no comments at the public hearing for the annexation of the property at 701 South Dilworth owned by Joshua A. Rowe. He said that the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended that the property be annexed and zoned R-1, and the board approved. An ordinance for the annexation will be prepared for the next meeting. Huffman said that the city would have to start taking water samples seven days a week to check for chlorine levels. Mayor Gary Brown said that the city received $1,520 in donations for the fireworks. He also said that if anyone had placed flowers at a gravesite at Cedar Grove Cemetery and they are missing, those flowers may be in the shed. They should check at the cemetery. He said that 989 people attended the Salem TCRC in June and 1,513 people went to the fitness center. Alderman Hadyn Powell read a note about the promoter of the cage fights wanting to use the city hall auditorium on August 27^th for a fund raiser, but the alderman pointed out that the floor needs to be sanded, buffed and finished as the current finish is about gone, and also brought up the messy condition of the Salem Freedom Activity Center after their last event. The promoter needed to know by Wednesday, but no vote was taken to allow the event. Mayor Brown said that on June 6^th that a man was saved by the fine work of the Salem lifeguards at the Salem Pool after he couldn’t feel his arms and legs while swimming. He was taken to the hospital. The board approved Resolution #11-2011 that authorizes the mayor to sign an agreement between the City of Salem and Strukel Electric, Inc. out of Pittsburgh, Kansas for the airport runway lighting project. Superintendent Bryson said that he and Public Works Director Bill Huffman discussed inserting into the electric bills the city policy and rules on picking up yard waste. The Street Department picks up leaves, clippings and branches from the curb on the first and third Mondays of the month. The clippings and leaves must also be placed in biodegradable bags. City Attorney William Camm Seay handed out sample copies of the employee manual to the alderman to review. Mayor Brown also said that department heads should get a copy to review before it is adopted. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

Mark Buehrle hurled seven strong innings as the White Sox took down the Royals, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game series. Kyle Davies (1-9) lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on five hits and three walks to lose his eighth straight start. He has not recorded a win since April 13 against Minnesota. Billy Butler had two doubles and knocked in a run for Kansas City, losers in seven of its last nine contests. The two teams play again tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be in New York tonight to face the Mets starting at 5:35. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio. The Cardinals are now in third place in the Central Division behind Milwaukee and the 1^st place Pittsburgh Pirates.
