The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 6070, 6085 and 6110. He added that brush would be cut on county road 4210 and that men would be servicing Dent County Dump Truck #117. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2020, 2025, 5300 and 5305. Larson said materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 4060. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he attended the second planning session of FirstNet put on by the Missouri Department of Public Safety. They are trying to create a dedicated First Responders wireless broadband network. First responders that want to find out more can go to this website: http:\publicsafetytools.info. Skiles also reported that grant dollars are available from the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated absentee voting continues for the August 5th Primary at her office. At 10:00, the commission opened bids for the construction of the bridge on Dent County Road 3210. The commission received three bids on the project.  Bids ranged from $340,678.72 to $352,827.30. Robertson Contractors from Poplar Bluff was the low bidder on the project. Other bidders included Boone Construction and Joe’s Bridge and Grading. The engineers will now review the bids to make sure that all aspects of the project have been covered and get back to the commissioners with their recommendation in about a week. At the last meeting, Mike Fiaoni from the Department of Conservation came in at the request of the commissioners with their concerns about a Walnut tree on the courthouse lawn. Fiaoni recommended the tree be taken down and the commission voted 3-0 to remove the tree. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Beauty & Wonders of the Sea, an underwater photography exhibit, is featuring photography by Beth Watson now through July 26th at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main in Salem. The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of June. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 38 summons to appear in court, 26 warning tickets,and 25 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated one report of abuse of a child, nine accidents, one assault, three burglaries, nine reports of disorderly conduct, three reports of domestic assaults, eight reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while drugged, three reports of driving while intoxicated, two reports of driving while revoked and/or suspended, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, two reports of failure to obey a lawful order of the police, one report of felonious restraint, one report of forgery, two reports of fraudulent use of credit and/or debit device, and one report of identity theft. The department also investigated one report of leaving the scene of an accident, one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants, two reports for open containers, one report of an ATV on the roadway, five reports of property damage, two reports of resisting and/or interfering with arrest, one report of sexual assault, one report of statutory rape, 17 reports of stealing, one report of trespassing, one report of unlawful transportation of a concealed weapon, one violation or an exparte and/or full order of protection and three 96-hour commitments. They also investigated one report of distributing/delivering/manufacturing/producing/possessing a control substance, one report of distribution of a controlled substance near schools, five reports of possession of amphetamine, six reports of possession of marijuana, two reports of possession of opium or derivative, seven reports of possession of drug paraphernalia, one report of selling amphetamine and one report of selling marijuana. The Salem Police Department also conducted two death investigations during the month.  The police department received 1,913 calls for service during the month, handled 167 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 81 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 14 hours in court testifying, and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in June included 17 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, two calls for prowlers, four calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, five intoxicated pedestrian calls, 16 calls for domestic disputes, and seven calls for a wrecker. There were seven 911 calls, 11 calls for peace disturbance, six calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, 14 ambulance assist calls, one call for drag racing and/or speeding vehicles, one fire call and one call for property damage. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,284 miles and arrested 32 males and 12 females during the month of June.

Captain James Remillard, commanding officer of Troop I, announced the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Crawford County on Saturday, July 5th. The checkpoint was conducted from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm on Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park. During the course of the four-hour operation troopers stopped 1,635 vehicles. There were five DWI arrests, six seat belt violations, one child restraint violation, three hazardous moving violations, three non-moving traffic violations, four driver’s license violations, three driving with suspended license, and six uninsured motorist violations.

The exhibition “For the Love of Birds” will feature the work of two Missouri artists, David Plank of Salem and Jim Barksdale of Steelville. The gallery exhibition “For the Love of Birds” will run now through Sunday, July 27th. Mr. Barksdale will also be demonstrating on July 19th and 26th at noon. Experience the Ozark’s musical heritage with bluegrass music on Saturday, July 19th at Alley Spring.  The Current River Bluegrass band will perform their acoustic mix of bluegrass near the Storey Creek School.  This FREE concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. and is part of the festivities recognizing Ozark National Scenic Riverways’ fiftieth anniversary. Alley Mill will be open for the public from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday as well as Sunday.  The public is invited to see the Alley Mill restoration in progress. The St. Louis Cardinals will start a three-game series with the L.A. Dodgers tonight at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are 52-44 on the year and sit one game back of the Brewers for first place in the NL Central. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game at 6:40.

The Kansas City Royals will be in Boston tonight to start a three-game series with the Red Sox. The Royals are 48-46 on the year and are 6½ games back of the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central. First pitch is set for 6:10.

Graveside services for Aileen Wells of Steelville, age 83, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 until 10:45 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to DCAWS.

Memorial service for Connie F. Carpentier of Rolla, age 64, will be held at 4:00 today afternoon at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Shriner’s. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Chuck “The GodFather” Notter passed away July 16th at the age of 59. A Celebration of Chucks life will be held at Martin Hart’s lake house from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 20th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town and Country Bank under Kris Notter.

Funeral services for Pearl Virginia Norris of St. James, age 85, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mary Lou Jones, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00.Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
