An accident occurred at 10:40 Tuesday night in Pulaski County in the eastbound lanes of Interstate-44 that resulted in a non-traffic fatality. According to the highway patrol report, 52-year old Joseph Cotillo of Rolla was driving a 2000 Nissan Maxima at mile marker 161 in St. Robert when he suffered from a medical condition. The vehicle then traveled off the right side of the roadway and came to rest without striking anything. Cotillo was taken to the Fort Leonard Wood hospital by Pulaski County ambulance. He was later pronounced dead by Dr. Ulu at 11:32 that night. The Nissan sustained no damage and was removed from the scene by Jack’s Towing.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will hold their regular monthly meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Salem R-80 Board Room. At the meeting, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will discuss the open house dates and times as well as give an update on the work being done at the school. The board will hear and award bids on milk, bread, fuel and pest control; then set the tax rate hearing and the date of the August Board meeting. The board will also discuss revising the A+ handbook, consider MSBA board policy 2013A updates and hear any resignations. In old business, the board will review and discuss athletic policies and discuss the Developmental Preschool lease. The board will then vote to go into closed session to discuss personnel. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 School Board of Education is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Saturday, July 6th at 3:05 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a 33-year old Salem female stole merchandise, valued at $53. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. Later that evening at 5:50, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male on an active arrest from Dent County. He pled guilty and was released after paying the fine. Later on that night at 10:20, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to an intoxicated subject causing a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 33-year old Joplin male on an active arrest warrant from Carl Junction, Missouri. He was incarcerated pending extradition. On Sunday, July 7th at 11:24 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 800 block of North Young in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a yellow and black 2005 Polaris Trail Boss ATV, valued $4,000, from the yard of a residence. On Monday, July 8th at 6:10 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a stolen vehicle. That investigation revealed that someone took a green 1996 Ford Explorer, valued $1,500, parked at a residence in the 1300 block of South Wines. The vehicle was located abandoned off the roadway near 1107 Highway DD in Salem. Later that morning at 10:22, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a theft. The investigation led to the arrest of a 19-year old St. Louis male for stealing merchandise valued at $7.95. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. A little later that morning at 10:55, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft from a vehicle. That investigation revealed that someone took a black Nike backpack containing a Nintendo DS and a Dynavox communication device, valued at $1,210, from a vehicle sometime between July 4th and July 7th. Later on that morning at 11:07, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone took a Garman GPS unit, valued at $100, from a vehicle parked near the 700 block of West First. At 6:15 that evening, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a wallet and contents, valued at $99, from a vehicle parked near the 100 block of North Macarthur. On Wednesday, July 10th at 4:15 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise, valued at $3.94. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 9:35, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that the driver of a blue and silver 1980-1990 Ford F-150 pumped $54.89 in fuel and left without paying. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announced the July Fourth holiday traffic crash and enforcement totals for the Troop I area, which consists of six counties in South Central Missouri. From July 3rd through July 7th, troopers participated in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort). During the peak travel periods on both July 3rd and July 7th, special enforcement operations also were conducted. These included the “20-Mile Trooper" project on Interstate 44 and other projects on the secondary highways. Enforcement efforts through the holiday period resulted in 386 citations for exceeding the posted speed limit, 136 citations for seat belt violations, one citation for a child restraint violation, and the issuance of 812 warnings. Troopers also made 10 arrests for driving while intoxicated and 23 arrests for drug violations. During this holiday period, officers assigned to Troop I investigated 30 traffic crashes that resulted in 20 injuries and one fatality.

The Kansas City Royals claimed infielder Pedro Ciriaco off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Ciriaco will be playing with his third different team this season when he joins the Royals following the All-Star break. The utilityman played in 28 games with the Boston Red Sox before being traded to San Diego in June, then was designated for assignment by the Padres last week following a 23-game stint. Ciriaco, who broke into the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010, is a career .279 hitter with four homers and 26 steals over 158 major league games.

Funeral services for Ron Stone of Licking, age 65, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. John Catholic Church in Licking. A vigil will be tonight at 6:00 with visitation from 6:30 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Williams Cemetery.
Graveside services for Allen Robnett, formerly of Salem, age 71, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Anutt Cemetery in Anutt. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Carman Lee “Frog” Halbert of Steelville, age 70, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery
Funeral services for Ollie Mae Cunningham of Steelville and formerly of Bourbon, age 88, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bourbon. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Bourbon Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Paul Anthony Mesey of Salem, age 44, will be held Monday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00.
