An accident occurred Thursday morning, July 14^th at 5:00 in Dent County on Highway 68 about three miles North of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Honda motorcycle driven by 55-year old Dale Williams of Salem failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. Williams suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial Hospital. The Honda motorcycle sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon in Maries County on Highway 63 about two miles north of Vienna. According to the highway patrol report, a 1987 Mazda truck driven by 55-year old David Lehnhoff of Vichy was attempting to pass a vehicle, crossed the centerline, and struck a 2005 Ford Escape driven by 54 year-old Kimberly Pederson of Anutt. Pederson suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Lehnhoff was not injured in the accident. They were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Escape was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Plaza Towing. The Mazda truck sustained minor damage but was driven from the scene.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. At the meeting, the board will hear from the Grace Community Church as they are requesting permission to block the street at 600 South Water from the south end of their parking lot to Franklin Street for the purpose of an evening Vacation Bible School to be held August 1^st through August 4^th between the hours of 6:00 to 9:00 pm. In bids, the City requested sealed bids for the purchase of a 12,000 pound service lift with a 4,500 pound rolling jack and air supply kit. Superintendent Ben Bryson has also requested bids for fuel for the airport. City Attorney William Camm Seay will then report on a public hearing held prior to the Alderman meeting regarding the annexation of property located at 701 South Dilworth Lane owned by Joshua A. Rowe. In reports, a representative of the Planning & Zoning Board will report on their meeting to zone property and their election of officers. Director of Public Works Bill Huffman will report on current and future projects concerning the city, and Mayor Gary Brown will give his report. During the introduction and reading of bills, Resolution #11-2011, will be read. It is a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and Strukel Electric, Inc. for the airport runway work. In new and miscellaneous business, Superintendent Bryson would like to discuss with the Board the City’s Yard Waste Policy/Policies; and the City of Salem Attorney Seay will present the revised Employee Manual for the Board’s inspection. City Clerk Mary Happel will present bills for approval and the Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing contracts, litigation and personnel. The Public Hearing and Public Meetings of the Planning & Zoning Commission that starts at 6:30, and the City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting are open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Tuesday, July 5^th at 6:40 in the evening, an officer was detailed to investigate a report of child molestation that occurred during a time frame between the years 2002 to 2005. That investigation led to an arrest warrant being issued on a 23-year old Salem man, who was then arrested on Thursday, July 14^th and held on $100,000 cash only bond. On Wednesday, July 6^th at 10:00 at night, an officer served a mental commitment order on a 22-year old Webb City man. He was transported from the Salem Memorial District Hospital to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center and released to their custody. On Friday, July 8^th at 5:30 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 500 block of East Acuff in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that between June 1^st and July 8^th, person or persons unknown did $724 worth of damage by breaking windows, putting holes in the sheet rock, and doing other miscellaneous damage to the residence. On Saturday, July 9^th at 12:10 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 39-year old Salem man for stealing $65 worth of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Sunday, July 10^th at 1:30 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem man for driving while intoxicated and a stop sign violation. He was issued summons to appear in court and was released to a sober driver. Later that morning at 2:20, an officer was sent to the 600 block of North Highway 19 in reference to an intoxicated subject that was knocking on a citizen’s door. That investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year old Salem man for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was issued summons to appear in court and incarcerated. Ryan Hanigan knocked in the eventual winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle and the Cincinnati Reds took a 3-1 victory over division rival St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. Jaime Garcia (9-4) allowed a pair of runs over seven frames to absorb the loss. Garcia suffered his first career loss at the hands of the Reds in six starts. Lance Berkman clubbed a home run for the Cardinals, who have gone 5-5 over their past 10 contests. St. Louis is 19-16 against the NL Central. With the loss, the Red Birds are ½ game behind Milwaukee in the NL Central race. The Cards will be off today and be in New York Tuesday to face the Mets.

Jim Thome's three-run home run in the sixth inning was the difference in Minnesota's 4-3 win against the Kansas City Royals, in the finale of a four-game set.  Joe Mauer finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Twins, who won three of the games in the series. Jeff Francoeur had a two-run homer for the Royals, who have lost six of their last eight games. Starter Felipe Paulino (1-3) allowed all four runs on seven hits in seven innings in the losing effort. He also struck out eight. The Royals will take on the Chicago White Sox tonight in Kansas City.
