The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting at the district administrative offices boardroom Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant updated the Board on the Committee on Educational Equality and stated the filings have been extended until September 15th. The Open House dates where set for the Junior/Senior High School for Monday, August 11th and for the Upper and Lower Elementary for Tuesday, August 12th from 5:30 until 7:30 pm. Bryant stated during the facility update that the roof at the Lower Elementary is finished, and possibly lighting may have struck at the Upper Elementary with damage to a side walk, with part of the walk being on the roof and the bells were also hit. It has been reported to the insurance company and expected to be repaired before school opens. Work is still progressing at the Alternative Program building to have it ready also for the start of school. Bryant reported that all the R-80 school buses passed 100 percent during inspection and wanted to thank the transportation fleet staff for a good job that they do in keeping the buses maintained. Bryant also reported that the Asthma Grant was received and is in progress. In Old Business, at the last months meeting the Board interviewed three possible candidates to fill two seats that were vacated. The Board appointed two new members, Joe Howard was appointed to fill the position vacated by A.J. Seay and Chris Heavin was appointed to fill the position vacated by Greg Stephens. Following the appointment, Board President Greg Nash administered the Oath of Office. Both Howard and Heavin will only serve until April 2009 when the position will be up for re-election. In New Business, the Board accepted the bids from MFA Oil, the only bidder, of $4.21 for #1 diesel and $4.18 for #2 diesel, with an eight cent differential for the 2008-2009 school year. The Board accepted the bids from Ferrell Gas, the only bidder, of $2.06 for transport propane and $2.199 for Bobtail propane, which are guaranteed prices for the year. Interstate was awarded the bid for bread at a locked in price for the year, Hiland was awarded the bid for milk and juice, which the price will fluctuate during the year, and the Board tabled awarding the bid for pest control, for further review until the August meeting. The Board then considered the 2008/2009 salaries, and Bryant recommended in order to stay competitive that $800 would be added to the salary base, which is a 3 percent increase, bringing the base to $30,000 a year. The Board then approved program evaluations on board policies, food service, finances, a non-resident student and the Board of Education policy BBFA, which a conflict of interest policy, which is required by law and the ethics commission. The Board then declared property surplus. A list will be post on the R-80 website, www.salem.k12.mo.us along with the deadline date for those wishing to bid on the surplus items. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education for August will be held on Thursday, August 21st beginning at 6:00 pm with the tax rate hearing, followed by the budget hearing and then the regular meeting. The Board accepted the resignation of Rebecca Stokes as a bus driver. The Board then voted to go into Executive Session.In closed session the BOE employed the following: Lisa Jones, elementary teacher; Phil Karr, SH Boys Head Basketball Coach; Kim Brand, SH Girls Head Basketball Coach; Tana Kettner, SH Girls Assistant Basketball Coach; and David Beeson, Boys 9^th Grade Coach.  The BOE was made aware of the following changes in assignments: Krystal LaRue, from LE 2^nd grade to UE Special Ed and Phillip Karr from SH/JH alternative to SH PE and Weight Training.

The Salem Football Team and the 12th Tiger Booster Club are sponsoring a Lift-a-Thon and Bar-B-Que on Friday, July 18th from 4:30 to 8:30 as a fundraiser to help raise money for the medical expenses and rehab expenses for Jake Brooks. Brooks suffered serious injuries in a four-wheeler accident earlier this summer. The event will take place at the high school practice field in conjunction with varsity football camp. Troy Glaus belted two of the Cardinals four solo homers, and St. Louis staved off a ninth inning rally to hold on for a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres in the opener of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Kyle Lohse (12-2) held San Diego to two runs on seven hits in seven innings for the Cardinals, who have won three of their last four overall. Lohse won his ninth straight decision, tying Arizona's Brandon Webb for the longest win streak in the majors this season. Ryan Franklin was rocky in the ninth but earned his 13th save. Jake Peavy (7-6) allowed all four runs on eight hits in seven frames, striking out seven and walking none. The right-hander added a pair of hits in three at- bats. Leading 4-2, Franklin came on to try and nail down the save but immediately surrendered a double to Kouzmanoff. Headley followed with a smash of the wall in left-center to score the run and pull San Diego within one. But, Franklin recovered, striking out pinch-hitter Brian Myrow before retiring Nick Hundley and pinch-hitter Luis Rodriguez on grounders to escape with the win.
