Air Evac Lifeteam, operated by Air Evac EMS, Inc., the largest independently owned air medical service in the United States, has received accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS). Air Evac Lifeteam operates a base in Salem, which has been in operation since December 2003. The prestigious accreditation represents the highest standard for medical transport services. As part of the accreditation process, Air Evac Lifeteam voluntarily undertook the largest scale inspection and accreditation process in CAMTS’ history and is now the largest medical transport program under one name to achieve this accreditation in the world. All 69 Air Evac Lifeteam bases opened prior to May of 2008 are now accredited, with three recently opened bases scheduled for review in the near future for inclusion in the accreditation. CAMTS is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality and safety of medical transport services. To receive accreditation, a medical transport service must be in significant compliance with the CAMTS accreditation standards and demonstrate a high level of overall quality in service. The voluntary accreditation process included on-site surveys at Air Evac Lifeteam’s corporate headquarters and bases by nine surveyors, along with a comprehensive review of the company’s operations. The company was evaluated on patient care, safety standards, quality improvement activities, education, equipment, staffing, communications, maintenance and administration. The company operates 72 bases across 12 states, serving more than 1,300 diverse referral sources, including over 600 hospitals and 700 EMS agencies, with over 1,600 employees. Air Evac Lifeteam has safely transported over 150,000 patients since it’s founding in 1985 and its aviation operations are “Gold” rated by the Aviation Research Group (ARG/US). The company’s medical training center leads the air medical industry as an approved provider of courses and educational training by the American Heart Association (AHA), National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and Continuing Education Coordinating Board of Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS). Air Evac Lifeteam is the largest air medical provider in nine of its 12 states of operation, including Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.

A group of regional coal experts from the Western Interior Basin Coal Forum has an updated perspective about another mining industry – lead mining – following a recent tour of the Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO). Nine coal experts, including six geologists, toured Buick Mine and Mill on June 18^th. The tour was part of the annual coal forum, which alternates yearly between sites in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma. This year, it was held at Montauk State Park in Salem. Fully equipped with hard hats, safety glasses, mine lights and self-rescuers, the tour participants were escorted approximately 1,100 feet below the Earth’s surface to view various types of mining equipment used by Doe Run to break, load and haul ore. The group also toured the Buick mill to learn how ore is crushed and further processed to extract the lead, zinc and copper metals. With six active mines and 200 employees per shift, Doe Run relies on a naturally stable environment, proactive initiatives, engineering controls and more than a century of expertise to create one of the safest mining environments in the world.

The Salem Football Team and the 12th Tiger Booster Club are sponsoring a Lift-a-Thon and Bar-B-Que on Friday, July 18th from 4:30 to 8:30 as a fundraiser to help raise money for the medical expenses and rehab expenses for Jake Brooks. Brooks suffered serious injuries in a four-wheeler accident earlier this summer. The event will take place at the high school practice field in conjunction with varsity football camp. The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with wide receiver Kevin Robinson and defensive end Brian Johnston on three-year contracts.
