The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading would be done on Dent County Road 6303, while materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 5450. Materials will also be added to county road 6307. Purcell indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4150 and 4155. Purcell reported that the back glass of a brush cutter on Dent County Road 6520, just off Route YY, had been broken out. If anyone has any information about the property damage, please call the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2090, 3080, 3090, 3010 and 4290. He stated that brush would be cut on county roads 2080 and 3260, and that rock would be hauled from the creek. He also said that a man would be going to Springfield to pickup oil for the Dura-Patcher and repair work would be done on various chip and seal roads Tuesday and Wednesday. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to thank US Representative Jason Smith and his staff as well as Senator Roy Blunt and his staff for their efforts in having the Department of Interior rescind the White River Watershed National Blueway Designation. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that specs for the three vehicles that Sheriff Rick Stallings reported as being surplus property have been submitted to her office. She said that bids would be accepted until 10:00 Thursday morning, August 1^st, in the Clerk’s office. The vehicles may be viewed at the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. Martin Bell asked the commission if it would be acceptable to plant a tree on the courthouse lawn in memory of late Dent County Assessor, Brenda Bell. The commission surveyed the grounds and approved the planting of a tree on the east side of the courthouse this fall. The commission recognized that the time for submission for Letters of Interest for the design and engineering of the new Dent County Bridge for Dent County Road 3210 had ended Friday, July 12^th at 10:00 in the morning. Only one Letter of Interest was received and that was from Great Rivers Associates. The Letter of Interest also included their Statement of Qualifications. Great Rivers was the firm that was in charge of the Sweeney Bridge Project near Bunker. Commissioner Larson said that he would get in touch with MoDOT to see how to proceed, as the county will be using their BRO funds from MoDOT for this project. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. Darin Brents was scheduled to appear to discuss the water disconnect ordinance, but did not arrive until late in the meeting, after the hearing of persons. He will have to reschedule for the next meeting to speak. City Administrator Clayton Lucas received bids for sand and pea gravel, but recommended rejecting all bids as the city currently has enough material on hand to do the project that the new material was needed for, or the city may need just a couple of truck loads. The board approved his recommendation and rejected all bids. Mayor Gary Brown said the sales tax revenues for the month of June were up $5,312 over last June, but calendar year-to-date, sales tax dollars are still below last year. City Administrator Clayton Lucas stated that Phase 1 of the site assessment at the Old Middle School did indicate that there was lead paint and asbestos throughout the project, and that there was an underground fuel tank. Since there was issues found, Phase 2 will now proceed. Mayor Gary Brown reported the new sewer line across Rolla Road was now complete and asphalt will be placed over the rocks today. The construction crew had to deal with a gas line, fiber optics, a water line, old corrugated metal culverts and more. Brown also indicated that Sho-Me Power will shut the power off to the city at 10:00 Tuesday, July 23^rd to repair a switchgear. Sho-Me will reinstall the gear on August 1^st at 10:00 in the morning and again the electric will be shut off. Brown said that if a person needs to have electric for a breathing apparatus or other medical need, the generator at the old city hall would be running both days to provide electric. Brown said the signal light at Doss Road is malfunctioning and MoDOT had to order a new part. When repaired, it will be like it used to be. There will be a Planning and Zoning Commission workshop on Monday, July 22^nd to review the section of the new city codebook relating to Planning and Zoning. Brown reported that for the month of June, there were 2,993 people that utilized the Salem Community Center at the Armory. The alderman approved Bill #3272, an ordinance that redefines what an All Terrain Vehicle is for the new city codes. The board then voted to go into closed session.   

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present “Mother Goose is Going Buggy” tonight starting at 6:30. This program is designed especially for toddlers, preschoolers and up to early elementary school children. Mother Goose will be sharing information about world of insects and arachnids, the good, the bad and the ugly. There will be stories, songs and a short walk around the house to look at some bugs close up if weather permits. The cost is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for whole family. Phone reservations are requested at 729-3400 to plan for snacks and activities.

Youth was served at the 2013 Home Run Derby as Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes beat Washington's Bryce Harper, 9-8, in the final round. The 27-year-old Cespedes became the second A's player to win the competition with the other being Mark McGwire in 1992. Cespedes had only five outs in the final round when he won the title with a towering 455-foot blast beyond the wall in center at Citi Field. Cespedes hit 17 homers in the first round, third most all time in a single round. The 2013 MLB All-Star game will be played tonight at 7:00 with the Tigers’ Max Scherzer set to pitch against the Mets’ Matt Harvey.

Funeral services for Thelma Chilton Meyers, of Salem, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Donald Paul Norris of St. James, age 65, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the 1^st Assembly of God Church in St. James. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Everett Eugene Wisdom of O’Fallon, Missouri, age 48, will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon at the Baue Funeral Home in O’Fallon. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in O’Fallon, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Ron Stone of Licking, age 65, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. John Catholic Church in Licking. A vigil will be Thursday at 6:00 with visitation from 6:30 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Williams Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ollie Mae Cunningham of Steelville and formerly of Bourbon, age 88, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bourbon. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Bourbon Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
