Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings reports that on July 13^th, two people from Dent County were arrested and charged with manufacture or production of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance. The two people were 33-year old Angelia I. Neff and 44-year old Alec B. Holweg. The charges are in connection with an incident that occurred on July 9 at a residence on Dent County Road 2313 west of Salem. Stallings said Neff is being held on a $25,000 cash bond, while Holweg is being held on a $50,000 cash bond. Stallings said that a search warrant was executed on July 9^th after a call came from the Division of Family Services to the sheriff’s department about a strong chemical smell coming from the shed on the property. Neff and Holweg were not at the property when the search warrant was executed and were asked to come to the sheriff’s office for questioning on Tuesday, July 13th. Deputies found numerous items that are generally used in the manufacturing of meth as well as 13 Darvocet tablets. Neff and Holweg were arrested after about two hours of questioning. The location of the incident is also the same location where Dent County Deputy JoAnn Barnes was killed and former Dent County Sheriff Bob Wofford was wounded in 2002 by Earl M. Forrest II who was later convicted on three first-degree murder charges.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4210, 5490 and 6470. Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5170 and a crew would be patching chip and seal on various roads throughout the district. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2520 and 2530, and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2330 and 4060. Larson also said that a crew would be repairing washouts in the Boss area, and he would be checking on a complaint that a resident had about Dent County Road 4330. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management has $150,000 in grant money available for this area and anyone interested in applying for a grant for an idea or a way to help reduce solid waste in the area needs to contact Tammy Snodgrass with MRPC for a grant packet at 573-265-2993.  Skiles also said that Interop Solutions would be in town on Monday and Tuesday to give a demonstration of their interoperable communication program. The county is looking into the possibility of using interoperable communication and this would give emergency responders in the county a first hand look at the program. The demonstration will be on Tuesday at the Dent County Fire Station. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

When you’re driving, you recognize the signs and symbols used on Missouri’s roadways. The stop signs, yield signs, and speed limit signs directly impact traffic patterns. The solid yellow lines on the highways are designed to do the same. These lines indicate no passing zones and are there for your safety. Solid yellow lines on your side of the centerline are telling you “Do not pass.” The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind drivers that the law prohibits motorists from driving their vehicles to the left side of the roadway at or within 100 feet of or at any intersection or railroad grade crossing. This law is designed for your safety and that of other drivers. Passing in an intersection can result in a serious traffic crash. Make sure you pass other vehicles only when traffic patterns and the law allows. Traveling on a country road is a daily occurrence for many Missouri drivers. It may even seem routine. However, it’s important to recognize traffic signs and symbols, especially when you see them every day. A solid yellow line indicating a no passing zone is designed for your safety. There may be an intersection ahead or perhaps a blind curve. Before you pass, check for the yellow lines as well as oncoming traffic. Are you running late for work? Going to meet someone and worried they’re waiting on you? This happens to everyone. Before you speed or try to pass other drivers who aren’t running late, remember the law! Speed limits and no passing zones are designated with safety in mind. Observe the speed limit and the no passing zones.  Running late is much better than not arriving at your destination.

The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 29^th at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, dental/vision/hearing checks, free hair cuts, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON) and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies.
