The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting on Thursday, July 17^th at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00. After the approval of the agenda, which will include approval of the minutes from the previous meeting along with bills, the foodservice report and substitute list and Board will address communications. Superintendent Steve Bryant will then give an update on the Committee on Educational Equality, address open house dates and times, update the Board on facilities, the annual school bus inspection and the Asthma Grant. In old business, the Board will appoint Board members, and the new member oath. In new business the Board will be taking bids on milk, bread, energy and pest control, consider the 2008-2009 salaries, set tuition rate for 2008-2009 school year and have program evaluations on Board policies, food service and finances. The Board will also consider the BOE Policy BBFA, consider approval of the non-resident student(s), declare property surplus and set dates for a tax rate hearing, budget hearing and the regular meeting date for the August Board meeting. The Board will then go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving DWI’s and a burglary. On Thursday, July 10^th at 6:37 in the evening, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of a vehicle being driven all over the roadway with 2 males standing on the running boards.  The vehicle was located on Highway 32 west and it was noted it did not have tail lamps or turn signals.  The vehicle was stopped and investigation led to the arrest of a 20-year old male for Operating a Motor Vehicle in an Intoxicated Condition, Person under 21 in Possession of Intoxicating Liquor while Operating a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Equip Vehicle with Two Red Tail Lamps. On Friday, July 11^th at 11:31 in the morning, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of a burglary, which had occurred at a residence off of K Highway.  The incident was reported to have occurred between 9:00 and 10:30 that morning.  Taken from the residence were a 32" LCT Norcent television and a Featherlite weed eater from the garage. On Saturday, July 12^th at 1:10 in the morning, while on routine patrol a Dent County Deputy observed a vehicle turn onto Highway 32 from Carty Street in Salem.  The vehicle made a wide turn and traveled onto the shoulder.  The vehicle was stopped after crossing the centerline and traveling on the shoulder for approximately 100-feet.  Investigation led to a 51-year old male being cited for Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of Less than 35 grams Marijuana and Possess Drug Paraphernalia.  Anyone with any information regarding the burglary, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

Emergency response agencies and leaders in Region I Dent, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Laclede counties are to plan for and react to a pandemic flu emergency and focus on the security of medication. The Phelps/Maries Counties Health Department, in partnership with Meramec Regional Planning Commission and the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee (HSOC), will host a tabletop training on pandemic flu on July 29^th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Meramec Regional Planning Commission in St. James.  All emergency response agencies in Region I are encouraged to participate as well as local elected officials, hospitals, schools, emergency management directors, coroners and interested local leaders. The exercise will provide a forum for local leaders to discuss the challenges and plan for such an event. For many attendees, it will provide a valuable source of information on how pharmaceuticals will be managed during a pandemic and the anticipated need for extra security for those drugs. In May 2007, the Phelps/Maries Counties Health Department, MRPC and the Region I HSOC conducted a pandemic flu exercise that focused on how to continue operations during pandemic with high absenteeism. It is estimated that 30 percent to 40 percent of the workforce will be out sick themselves or caring for sick family members. This year’s exercise will focus on security and distribution of pharmaceuticals during a pandemic. The Salem Football Team and the 12th Tiger Booster Club are sponsoring a Lift-a-Thon and Bar-B-Que on Friday, July 18th from 4:30 to 8:30 as a fundraiser to help raise money for the medical expenses and rehab expenses for Jake Brooks. Brooks suffered serious injuries in a four-wheeler accident earlier this summer. The event will take place at the high school practice field in conjunction with varsity football camp. Michael Young's sacrifice fly in the 15th inning ended a New York marathon All-Star game, as the American League continued its domination of the National League with a 4-3 victory at the 79th edition of the Mid-Summer Classic. The American League, which is unbeaten in the last 12 All-Star contests, last losing in 1996, overcame leaving 17 men on base, going 3-of-22 with runners in scoring position, but ending the game in the final season of the current Yankee Stadium and giving manager Terry Francona some relief. Tampa Bay's Scott Kazmir, who threw 104 pitches in a game on Sunday, threw the top of the 15th inning to get the win. He was the AL's 12th and final pitcher. Philadelphia's Brad Lidge, who hasn't blown a save or suffered a loss during this entire regular season, suffered the loss. Home run derby champion Justin Morneau led off the bottom of the 15th with a single. After Ian Kinsler lined out, Dioner Navarro singled up the middle and J.D. Drew walked. Then stepped in Texas shortstop Young, who lofted a fly ball to right field. The throw home was on track, but Morneau slid in safely, barely beating the tag try of Atlanta's Brian McCann. Drew, who hit a two-run homer, was named the game's MVP, in the 4 hour, 50 minute contest, the longest by time in All-Star history. The 15 innings tied an All-Star record, with the game ending after 1:30 a.m. It was the first extra-inning win (1-9-1) for the American League.
