The Dent County Extension Council would like to announce that Sarah Hultine has accepted the position of the Community Development Position that has been vacant since the departure of Kevin Allen back in July of 2006. Her office will be housed in the Dent County Extension Office in the Judicial Building on 5^th Street. Sarah will begin her duties September 17 of 2007.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 N. Washington. During the hearing of persons, John Watson requested to speak to the board of alderman concerning equal protection under the law, the filing of police reports, and changing of utilities without a work order. James Ellis from the Western Cherokee has also requested to speak to the Aldermen about changing utilities without a work order, equal protection under the law, the filing of police reports, and the Western Cherokee’s willingness to continue to work with the City of Salem. Street Superintendent Bryson will then present bids for a trailer for the Street Department they have budgeted $2,950.00 for this purpose. The city of Salem has requested bids for 3 Ford Exployers and 3 Chevy Impalas for the Salem Police Department. Chief Clifford Jadwin will present the bids. A total of $45,000.00 was budgeted for the police cars in the new budget. Sean Curley, president of the planning and zoning board, will report on their meeting held prior to the board of Alderman Meeting where they discussed the reviewed use for the operation of a day care center located at 700 E. Hunt street requested by Eric and Jackie Schafer. Alderman Jim McDaniels will give a 4^th of July report and would like an update on the mosquito problem and storm water problems as well as other miscellaneous Items. Alderman Bill Riley will discuss the water problem between Ellis and Gibbs Streets as well s miscellaneous items.  Aldermen Jim Jackson and Mike Whitley will also address miscellaneous items before Mayor Gary Brown gives his comments. City Attorney Mark Weaver will present a draft ordinance concerning vicious dogs for the Board’s review and input. The Mayor is requesting approval to proceed with the hiring of a designer for the new soccer fields. Mr. Tim Frevert has presented the Mayor with a bid for this project. Mr. Frevert charges $40 per hour plus travel. The board will then go into closed session for the discussion of personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

An accident happened Friday night at 9:49 in Crawford County on Interstate 44 about two miles east of Bourbon. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Ford Escort driven westbound by 22-year old Crystal McDonald of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway, crossed the North Service Road, and vaulted over a private drive before coming to rest in a parking area. McDonald suffered minor injuries and was taken by the North Crawford County EMS to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. McDonald was wearing a seat restraint in the accident and the Ford Escort was totaled.       

High school students from across the country recently visited The Doe Run Company to learn about the important role blasting plays in the extraction of essential minerals from underground mines. The 41 students were participating in the University of Missouri-Rolla Department of Mining Engineering’s Summer Explosives Camp. The June 7th and June 21st visits included trips to Doe Run’s Buick Mine and Mill, followed by underground tours of the Brushy Creek Mine. The students, ages 16 and older and from 14 states, first underwent a safety orientation led by Dave Tucker, safety specialist at Doe Run’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Operations (SEMO). The students got a first-hand look at how they plan, prepare and conduct underground blasting in order to access lead ore deposits. The groups also got to witness an ore face being charged with explosives, as well as an underground blast of nearly 1,200 pounds of explosives used to break about 1,000 tons of ore. Doe Run is a longtime supporter of UMR’s mining engineering program. Ten Doe Run mining engineers either attended or graduated from UMR. The summer camp is run by Paul Worsey, professor of mining engineering at UMR and former instructor to many Doe Run employees. According to Worsey, being able to use Doe Run as a classroom-type setting gives students a glimpse of how their training can be applied to the field Dedicated to environmentally responsible mineral and metal production, Doe Run operates the world’s largest, single-site lead recycling facility, located in Missouri.

Funeral services for Debbie Jean Gibbs of Salem, age 43, will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Private graveside services for Roger Edwin Swan of Salem, age 63, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the Fee Fee Cemetery in Bridgeton. A memorial visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Niebrug-Martin Funeral Home in Warrenton. A memorial Celebration of Life will be held Saturday at 4:00 in Warrenton. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Salem or the cancer research of your choice.

Funeral services for Irma Jean Ilges of St. James, age 51, will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James.
