The City of Salem Utility Construction Crew has announced that West Rolla Road will be closed to thru traffic today for utility line work from Grand Avenue to Dilworth Lane from 7:00 in the morning until the work is completed. West Third Street, also known as Tiger Pride Drive, will be used as a detour route.
A St. James man drowned at the Lake of the Ozarks in Camden County Saturday morning. At 10:47 in the morning, 35-year old Johnny Ellis was walking to the back of a boat and fell overboard. Ellis was pronounced dead at the scene by Dee Ballard of Southwest Forensics at 11:55. His body was taken to the Allee Reed Funeral Home in Camdenton.
An accident occurred at 6:35 Friday evening in Phelps County on Highway 72 two miles East of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 21 year-old Carl J. Catlett of Salem, attempted to avoid striking another vehicle from behind and skidded off the roadway. Catlett was wearing a safety restraint, sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Chevrolet sustained no damage and was removed from the scene by a family member.
An accident occurred at 4:50 Friday afternoon in Maries County on Route H about seven miles north of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 GMC Pickup driven by 18 year-old Kylie C. Richardson of Rolla, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck three mailboxes. Richardson then overcorrected causing the GMC to travel off the left side of the roadway striking a ditch. Richardson sustained minor injuries and was taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, Mr. Darin Brents wishes to discuss with the Board the city’s policy on disconnects. In bids, the City requested bids for 80 loads of pea gravel/sand, which were due back on July 9th, will be presented. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will update the Board on items concerning the city and Mayor Gary Brown will also address various items about the city as well. During the reading of bill and resolutions, Bill #3272, an ordinance to amend Title III, Chapter 300, Section 300.010 regarding the definition of an all-terrain vehicle will presented as requested by City Attorney William Camm Seay. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, litigation and contracts. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department has released several of their reports. On Thursday, June 27th at 11:27 in the evening, an officer transported a 32-year old Joplin male to the Royal Oaks Hospital in Windsor, Missouri in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Friday, June 28th at 2:52 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1600 block of Doss Road in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence by force and took items valued at $50. On Saturday, June 29th at 2:30 in the afternoon, anofficer transported a 23-year old Salem female to Cox North Medical Center in Springfield in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Monday, July 1st, a 47-year old male and a 20-year old male, both of Salem, were taken into custody for the burglary of Candi’s Boots and More on May 8th of this year. The burglary involved the theft of more than $8,000 in merchandise from the store. They were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Thursday, July 4th at 4:05 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 300 block of West Rolla Road in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that two juvenile males caused about $500 in damages to a fence section. On Friday, July 5th at 5:00 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Babb Lane truck parking lot reference a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took four wheels and tires off of a truck tractor that was parked in the lot valued at $2,000. Later that morning at 10:07, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem male for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present “Mother Goose is Going Buggy” this Tuesday night starting at 6:30. This program is designed especially for toddlers, preschoolers and up to early elementary school children. Mother Goose will be sharing information about world of insects and arachnids, the good, the bad and the ugly. There will be stories, songs and a short walk around the house to look at some bugs close up if weather permits. The cost is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for whole family. Phone reservations are requested at 729-3400 to plan for snacks and activities.

Yadier Molina capped a 4-for-6 night at the plate with a three-run homer in the ninth, as the NL-leading St. Louis Cardinals used a 21-hit attack to beat the Chicago Cubs, 10-6, in the finale of a four-game series. Pete Kozma went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals (57-36), who head into the All-Star break with a one-game lead over the Pirates in the NL Central. St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright, who was named to his second All-Star team, allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings. Edward Mujica (2-1), who was selected to replace Wainwright on the NL All-Star roster, tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Allen Craig, Matt Adams, Matt Carpenter and David Freese added an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, who are now off until Friday when they start a series with the San Diego Padres.
Asdrubal Cabrera clubbed a go-ahead, two-run double that helped the Cleveland Indians complete a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 6-4 decision Sunday at Progressive Field. Alcides Escobar plated a pair of runs, while Alex Gordon and Johnny Giavotella added an RBI apiece for the Royals, who have lost five straight games. The Royals are now off until Friday.

Funeral services for Lillian F. Reed of Columbia, formerly of St. James, age 102, will be held today at 1:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the College Hills Cemetery.
Funeral services for Van Seigrist of Reynolds will be held today at 2:30 at the Ohlman Baptist Church in Bunker. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Corridon-Reynolds Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker.
Funeral services for Thelma Chilton Meyers, of Salem, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.
Funeral services for Donald Paul Norris of St. James, age 65, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the 1st Assembly of God Church in St. James. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Everett Eugene Wisdom of O’Fallon, Missouri, age 48, will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon at the Baue Funeral Home in O’Fallon. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in O’Fallon, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
Funeral services for Ron Stone of Licking, age 65, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. John Catholic Church in Licking. A vigil will be Thursday at 6:00 with visitation from 6:30 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Williams Cemetery.
Funeral services for Ollie Mae Cunningham of Steelville and formerly of Bourbon, age 88, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bourbon. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Bourbon Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
