An accident happened on Tuesday, July 14^th at 12:20 in the afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about 12 miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Dodge Dakota driven by 22-year old Amanda Lay of Salem was traveling northbound on highway 19. The Dodge Dakota hydroplaned on a curve and skidded off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Lay suffered minor injury and refused treatment from the EMS at the scene. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Dakota was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, an out of state warrant, a vehicle shooting air soft pistols, a traffic stop and a stolen purse. On Monday, July 6^th at 3:20 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 500 block of East Second Street in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a Stihl chainsaw valued at $350 and a Stihl weed eater valued at $200 were stolen from the pickup bed of a truck parked at the residence. On Thursday, July 9^th at 2:30 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of West Fifth Street in reference to an individual whom had a felony warrant from out of state. The report led to the arrest of a 39-year old Salem man on a felony probation warrant from the state of Illinois. He was incarcerated pending extradition to Illinois. On Saturday, July 11^th at 8:40 p.m. an officer was detailed to 1200 Highway 32 East, the Salem Bowling Alley in reference to an individual in a vehicle shooting air soft pistols at individuals. The report led to the detention of 1 juvenile, which will be forwarded to the Juvenile Officer. On Sunday, July 12^th at 1:00 a.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 37-year old Ozark man for driving while intoxicated and traffic violations. He was issued summons to appear in court and incarcerated. Also on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. an officer was contacted at station in reference to a stolen purse. The victim stated she had been shopping at Wal-Mart and her wallet was stolen from her purse. Stolen was her driver’s license and approximately $40.00 cash. Anyone with information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is ask to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center will host a follow-up meeting to begin identifying events and volunteers for the planning of the Salem’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The meeting will be held tomorrow night beginning at 7:00 pm. If you are interested in helping to plan special events, you are more than welcome to attend the meeting. If you have some historic photos, news or information that you feel would be important to include in the celebration, please bring it by the ONCRC at 202 South Main Street, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm or call the ONCRC at 729-0029.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will conduct a public hearing, called by President, Sean Curley, on Monday, July 20^th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:45 pm to consider the annexation of 300 South Dilworth Lane and the subdivision of a lot at 402 North Water, owned by the City of Salem. After the hearing a public meeting will be held to consider the zoning of 300 South Dilworth Lane and the conditional use for a used car lot at 404 West Fourth Street owned by Wayne Woods. The public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners is open to the public.

The “Back to School” Fair will be held tomorrow at the old city hall from 10:00 to 2:00 where students who qualify based on income levels, can get free school supplies, backpacks, haircuts, health screenings, games, prizes and more. Dent County 4-H’ers will hold their annual Achievement Day on Monday, July 20^th at the Commons Youth Building.  This event provides an opportunity for 4-H’ers to show off what they have done and accomplished through the year.  A panel of community judges will judge projects and selected projects receiving blue ribbons will be eligible to go to the MO State Fair next month for exhibition. Projects will be on display from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Projects will include crafts, woodworking, welding, clothing foods, photography, and many miscellaneous categories. Other Achievement Day activities include 4-H’ers participating in judging tables, personal talks judging, project demonstrations, club skits, public speaking, a style show, and awards.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Thomas Eugene Walker of Bourbon, age 81, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Memorial services for Robert L. Ferrell of St. James, age 76, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the VFW in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the family. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Dale Louis Belflower of Anutt, age 76, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Young Community Center. 

Graveside services for Blanche Wofford of Salem, age 90, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary.

Graveside services for Patricia “Patty” Villines of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, formerly of Salem, age 51, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Stone Hill Cemetery in Salem. Arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennetter Funeral Home in Cuba.

No service will be held for Thomas Shatzer of Salem, age 55. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
