Mariano Rivera surpassed Dennis Eckersley for the most saves in All-Star Game history, closing the door for the fourth time as the American League used a late Adam Jones sacrifice fly to down the National League, 4-3, extending its unbeaten streak to 13 games. Jones' eighth-inning sacrifice fly to right plated Detroit's Curtis Granderson, who tripled off the base of the left-field fence earlier in the frame. The American League is now 12-0-1 in the last 13 Mid-Summer Classics, and the AL champion will have home field in the World Series. The American League's unbeaten streak is the longest in the game's history, surpassing the Senior Circuit's 11-game run from 1972-1982. The AL's last loss was a 6-0 decision at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium in 1996. Carl Crawford's catch and a 1-for-3 effort at the plate earned him the All-Star Game MVP Award. Albert Pujols went 0-for-3 in the game and Yadier Molina went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the National League. Ryan Franklin pitched the third inning and set down the American League in order. KC’s Zack Grienke pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth for the American League.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed off season acquisition Matt Cassel to a multi-year contract on Tuesday. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, per team policy. Kansas City traded a second-trade pick to New England earlier in the offs eason in exchange for veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel and Cassel, whom the Patriots slapped with their franchise tag following his impressive 2008 campaign. The 27-year-old was expected to earn $14.651 million this season. Cassel made a name for himself last year after taking over for an injured Tom Brady in the season-opener. He helped the Patriots to a record of 11-5, including 10-5 in his 15 starts, but New England did not qualify for the playoffs. A seventh-round pick of the Patriots in 2005, Cassel threw for 3,693 yards with 21 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions in 16 games. He had thrown a total of 39 passes in his first three seasons as Brady's backup.
