The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that work continues in the Bunker area on Dent County Road 5610, where a crew is hauling material and grading.  Simpson also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 2480, 5015 and 5180.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 3140, which received quite a bit of damage due to flooding.  Tune also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3080 and 3120 and a crew would be patching chip and seal on Dent County Road 3210.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the counties sales tax revenue is down $1,180 from this time last year, and he also said he would be attending a Community Betterment Association Board Meeting tonight.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the Commission has certified a sample ballot that will place the issue of whether or not to make the Prosecuting Attorney’s job a full time position, on the November 4^th Election Ballot.  Curley also said that the last day to request a mail out ballot for the August 5^th Primary is Wednesday, July 30^th and the last day to absentee vote is August 4^th at 5:00 pm.  At the previous meeting Judge Ball came by to present a check from the City of Salem for Municipal Court reimbursement to the county.  The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and a shoplifter. On June 11^th at 12:43 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 25-year old Salem female had taken $4,048.10 out of a bank account of another without authorization. On June 12^th at 11:40 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 1300 block of Gertrude in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took $120 cash from a purse. On June 13^th at 7:30 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 200 block of East Truman in reference to a theft. The report revealed that an unknown person took numerous items from the yard of the residence valued at $335. On June 16^th at 10:55 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report revealed that a 29-year old Salem male took a bottle of liquor valued at $18.48. Further investigation led his arrest for stealing and resisting arrest. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On June 18^th at 1:17 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East Roosevelt in reference to a theft. The report revealed that 37-year old Salem male took a Bearcat scanner from a residence. Further investigation led to his arrest. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please call the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Park Board will conduct a meeting on Tonight, July 15^th at the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road beginning at 6:30. After a report from the Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash the Board will discuss the sales tax issue. There will be a report on the Al Brown Fields softball leagues and the field conditions. The Board will also discuss the youth baseball and softball leagues concerning the fields, ages for next year, and the concession stand. The Salem Youth Activity Fund, the swimming pool and plans for the beginning of soccer season will also be addressed, followed by any other business that may come before the Board. The meeting of the Salem Park Board is open to the public.

The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting at 7:00 on Tonight, July 15^th at the Salem Community Center located at 604 North McGrath Lane in Salem. After approval of the agenda including the minutes from the previous meeting along with disbursements the Board will hear several report including financial reports, the water testing report, the President’s report and the IECA report. The Board will then address any general and new business. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session.

The Salem Football Team and the 12th Tiger Booster Club are sponsoring a Lift-a-Thon and Bar-B-Que on Friday, July 18th from 4:30 to 8:30 as a fundraiser to help raise money for the medical expenses and rehab expenses for Jake Brooks. Brooks suffered serious injuries in a four-wheeler accident earlier this summer. The event will take place at the high school practice field in conjunction with varsity football camp. Despite an epic first round from Texas' Josh Hamilton, Minnesota's Justin Morneau hit five homers in the final to defeat the Rangers slugger for the2008 Home Run Derby title Monday night at Yankee Stadium. Hamilton smacked 28 homers in the first round, a single-round Home Run Derby record, which easily put him in the final with Morneau. But with the two-round totals erased for the final, Hamilton didn't settle into a groove and hit just three. He is the first Twins player to win the Home Run Derby, and just the third Twins player to take part in the contest. Tom Brunansky (1985) and Gary Gaetti (1989) were the others. Hamilton's 28 first-round blasts eclipsed Bobby Abreu's single-round record of 24, set in 2005.
