An accident occurred at 9:40 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 68 about three and a half miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 59-year old Stephen Cochran of Salem was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer south when he crossed the centerline at a hillcrest and struck the farm implement being towed by a 1981 Ford farm tractor driven north by 51-year old Randall Heck of Salem. Cochran suffered minor injuries but was not immediately treated. The Ford Explorer sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The towed implement sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

An accident occurred at 8:15 Friday evening in Dent County on County Road 4050 about seven miles northeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 60 year-old Michael A. Wallace of Salem was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup when he swerved to miss a deer, ran off the road, and struck several small trees. A passenger in the pickup, 18 year-old Jimmy D. Taylor of Salem, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by private vehicle. 

An accident occurred in Crawford County at 3:28 Friday afternoon that took the life of a Fort Leonard Wood man. According to the highway patrol report, 22 year-old Crystal N. Bollinger of Potosi was driving a 1999 Chrysler 300 east when she attempted to pass a 2006 Freightliner Tractor-Trailer, driven east by 45 year-old Michael S. Marcee of Lonedell. Bollinger began braking and lost control of the Chrysler and Marcee attempted to avoid Bollinger’s vehicle. The Chrysler then struck a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, ridden west by 35-year old Michael R. Garling of Fort Leonard Wood, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. Garling was pronounced dead at the scene by Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson. His body was taken to the Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba. Bollinger suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Arch Helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. Everyone involved in the accident were safety devices. The Chrysler and the Harley-Davidson were totaled and removed by Miles and Sons Towing, while the Freightliner tractor-trailer sustained no damage.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will be conducting a workshop, called by Chairman Jerry Craig, tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 202 North Washington, beginning at 7:00 pm. The workshop will be to review and the status of City Codes and the workshop is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Monday, June 30th at 7:58 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East First in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 44-year old Kansas City male on a warrant from Probation and Parole. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that afternoon at 12:45, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen credit card. That investigation revealed that someone took a credit cart from a vehicle and made several unauthorized charges, valued at $211. Later on that afternoon at 3:06, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old male of Raymond, Illinois on an active arrest warrant from Shannon County. He was released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. That night at 11:49, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem female for driving while drugged, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, July 1st at 8:16 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of East Acuff in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 52-year old Salem male who was intoxicated and threatening people. He was issued a summons to appear in court for disorderly conduct and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Wednesday, July 2nd at 12:19 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Shear Edge in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that a 19-year old Salem male had entered the building after hours and took items valued at more than $1,000. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that afternoon at 4:12, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 100 block of South Warfel in reference to a domestic disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year old Salem female for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault on a law enforcement officer. She was issued summonses to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. Carlos Gomez went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, as Milwaukee cruised into the All-Star break with an 11-2 victory over St. Louis in the finale of a three-game set. Matt Adams and George Kottaras knocked in a run each for the Cardinals, who lost for just the second time in their last seven. Carlos Martinez (2-4) lasted just four frames in defeat, tagged for four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. The Cardinals head into the All-Star Break 52-44 and are one game back of the Brewers for the lead in the NL Central.

The St. Louis Cardinals made a number of roster moves Friday, activating pitcher Joe Kelly off the 60-day disabled list and claiming catcher George Kottaras off waivers. St. Louis also optioned pitcher Tyler Lyons to Memphis and transferred pitcher Jaime Garcia to the 60-day disabled list. Garcia will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery for symptoms associated with thoracic outlet syndrome.

Omar Infante's two-run single in the seventh inning handed the Kansas City Royals a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a four-game set from Kauffman Stadium. Alcides Escobar and Jarrod Dyson both finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. The Royals go into the All-Star Break 48-46 on the year and trail Detroit by 6½ games for the lead in the AL Central.

The Kansas City Royals activated outfielder Nori Aoki from the 15-day disabled list. The Royals also optioned infielder Christian Colon to Triple-A Omaha. Aoki landed on the DL on June 21.

Funeral services for 76-year old Ronald F. Swartz will be held at 11:00 Tuesday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the memorial of your choice.

Funeral services for 96-year old Grace Cox will be held at 11:00 Wednesday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday evening at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.

Memorial service for Connie F. Carpentier of Rolla, age 64, will be held at 4:00 Friday afternoon at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Shriner’s. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
