Applications for all Dent County Pageants for the Dent County Fall Festival are for those age 0 to 20 years of age and are available at both Bank of Salem locations and the deadline to enter is Monday, July 18^th. The Dent County Baby Contest is for those age 0 to 20 months; the Little Mr and Miss Dent County Pageant will have two divisions one for those age 2 to 4 years of age and one for those age 5 to 10 years of age; and that pageant will be held on Wednesday, August 10^th beginning at 7:30 pm at the Commons. The Jr Miss Dent County Pageant participants must be age 11 to 14 and the Miss Dent County Pageant is for those age 15 to 20 years of age, and will be held on Thursday, August 11^th beginning at 7:30 pm at the Commons. The Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in cooperation with the Phelps County PHA Family Self-Sufficiency Program, will host a free workshop on homeownership, credit repair and credit building. The workshop is planned from 10:00 am to noon on Monday, August 15^th at the Peoples Bank located at 701 North Franklin in Cuba.  Linda Jaycox, Raymond James financial advisor, will be presenting. The workshop is offered at no cost and registration is requested by Monday, August 8^th. Free training classes are a part of the MRPC and PHA’s efforts to help prepare families who are first-time homebuyers for homeownership and make them aware of the resources available to assist with homeownership. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a driving while intoxicated saturation patrol conducted on Saturday, July 2^nd in Pulaski County. During the operation one individual was arrested for driving while intoxicated and two arrests were made for misdemeanor drug offenses. There were four citations issued for speed violations, two citations for seat belt violations, one child restraint violation, three hazardous moving violations, one non-moving traffic offense, two driver license violations, and three for uninsured motorists. In addition to these citations, 38 warnings were also issued.

Want to help keep Missouri beautiful? Try adopting a highway. According to MoDOT Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator Shelly Cauldwell, there is a tremendous need for adopters throughout south central Missouri. She stated that everyone needs to help and get involved in their community as there are many sections of roadway across the state that need to be adopted. Cauldwell cited numerous areas that she would like to see adopted in south central Missouri this year, including Routes 19 and 8 near Steelville in Crawford County and near Salem on Highway 68, 19 and 32 in Dent County. Getting involved is easy. Contact Coordinator Shelly Cauldwell by calling the MoDOT Customer Service Center at 1-888-ASK MoDOT (275-6636). MoDOT will provide vests, bags and safety information to those interested in adopting a highway.

Local response agencies, including fire, EMS, emergency management, public works and hazmat teams, will have the opportunity to learn more about responding to hazardous materials incidents in a two-day training in Salem. The class is scheduled from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, Tuesday through Thursday, July 26^th, 27^th and 28^th at the Salem Emergency Management located at #2 South Main Street.  The Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee (MREPC) and Missouri Emergency Response Commission (MERC) are sponsoring the training, which is offered free of charge. Topics include laws and standards of hazardous materials, identifying placards and containers, recognizing the presence of hazardous materials, understanding material safety data sheets and shipping papers, and using the North American Emergency Response Guidebook. This course meets the prerequisite for Firefighter I from the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. Successful completion of this course will require a 70 percent score or greater on a written exam. The Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee works with local governments as well as the private sector to maintain plans responsive to chemical hazards, which seriously threaten the area. Meramec Regional Planning Commission, a voluntary council of local governments serving the eight-county Meramec Region, provides staff support for the local emergency planning committee.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is tagging 1,600 legal-sized small mouth bass on five rivers in southern Missouri as part of a research project. Anglers who catch tagged bass can earn $25 or $75 by reporting their catches to MDC researchers. MDC biologists are tagging smallmouth bass in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River, and the North Fork of the White River, and will continue tagging during the spring season over the next two years. The tagged bass do not have to be kept to receive a reward. Anglers may just remove the tag and release the fish. Tags must be returned to the MDC to receive a reward. To report tagged catches, anglers must call the phone number listed on the tag and provide the following information: tag number, if the fish was kept or released, date of catch, total length of fish, and approximate location of catch. The Kansas City Royals will begin a four game series tonight as they take on the Minnesota Twins.

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms with pitcher Jaime Garcia on a four-year contract with two club options. Garcia, 25, is 9-3 with a 3.23 ERA during the first half of this season, which comes on the heel of one of the best rookie campaigns in 2010 where he was 13-8 with a 2.70 ERA (4^th N.L.) ranking.
