The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that the southern portion of Dent County received up to two inches of rain over the weekend allowing crews to continue grading. Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5630, 5650, 6520, 6540, 6550 and 6665. Purcell also stated that rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 4180, and a crew would be cutting brush and removing debris from Dent County Road 5520. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2050, 3225, 4060, 5330 and 5335. Larson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 2540, where a culvert was replaced, and Dent County Road 4050 is now open where a low water crossing was put in. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to commend Dent County Emergency Management Director Allen Kimrey for the work he and the counties storm spotters did Saturday evening when storms rolled into western Dent County. Sandy Hogan stopped by the meeting to recommend that the Commission appoint Chris McGuirt to the Senate Bill 40 Board. After some discussion, the Commission agreed and appointed McGuirt to the board. Also at the meeting the Commission voted to accept the bid of $6,388.84 from Southtown Funiture for carpeting and vinyl in the upstairs of the Judicial Building. The bid consists of laying new flooring in the Extension Office, hallway and repairing the tile in the restroom. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident happened in Crawford County on Highway 19 about six miles from Steelville at 2:40 Monday afternoon. According to the highway patrol report, a 1990 Ford Flatbed truck driven by 37-year old Joseph Martin of Cherryville, was traveling southbound when a log fell off the truck into the road and into the path of a 2004 Chevy Pickup driven by 50-year old Robert J. Martin. The Chevy struck the log and came to rest in the roadway. A passenger in the pickup, 75-year old Floye Martin of Cherryville, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by the Steelville Ambulance. The Chevy pickup was totaled and towed from the scene by a friend of the driver. The flatbed had no damage. Floye and Robert Martin were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.
The Missouri State Water Patrol released a report of an incident that occurred in Crawford County, on Saturday, July 11th at 1:50 in the afternoon one mile below Brown’s Bridge in Steeleville on Huzzah Creek that took the life of a Columbia man. According to the water patrol report, 25-year old Garrick Holmquest of Columbia jumped off of a cliff into about six foot of water and struck his head. Holmquest’s body was recovered by bystanders and pronounced dead at 2:13 pm by Coroner Dr. Troop of the St. John’s Medical Center. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports involving a brush fire, a vehicle accident and a severe storm. On Wednesday, July 8th at 12:50 in the afternoon the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a brush fire on County Road 2240. Upon arrival seven firefighters found there was less than an acre on fire. On Friday, July 10th at 8:56 in the evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway H. Upon arrival seven firefighters assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital with two occupants that were airlifted by Air-Evac and Lifeline II. On Saturday, July 11th at 6:05 in the early evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District storm spotters were paged out due to a severe storm moving through the area.
The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will hold a blood drive in Salem today from 1:00 to 6:00 at the First Baptist Church.
The Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) is seeking grant applications from organizations or groups of individuals interested in enhancing the competitiveness of the state's specialty crop industry. Grant applications are due on July 31, 2009. Applications will be considered on a competitive basis. Selected applications will be included in the Missouri specialty crop state plan and reviewed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Specialty crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and nursery crops, including floriculture. Some examples of enhancing the competitiveness of specialty crops are education, "buy local" programs, addressing environmental concerns and developing cooperatives. An application packet and program details for the specialty crop grant are available by contacting Tony Anderson at (573) 751-2969.
Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder captured the 2009 Home Run Derby, beating Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz in the final round Monday night at Busch Stadium. The 25-year-old Fielder became the first player from the Brewers to win the competition, held in advance of Tuesday's All-Star Game. He had six homers in the final round to five for Cruz. St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols, who went into the All-Star break leading the majors with 32 homers, nearly didn't make it out of the first round of eight competitors at his own ballpark. He hit five homers, and beat Minnesota's Joe Mauer and Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena in a bat-off to advance to the second round.
The National League will try to win the All-Star Game for the first time since 1996, The American League has won the last six, going 11-0-1 in the last 12 -- since the 2002 game at Miller Park ended in a 7-7 tie. President Barack Obama will throw the ceremonial first pitch, while the winner gains home-field advantage for the World Series. Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay and San Francisco Giants righty Tim Lincecum have been selected as the starting pitchers. You can hear the All-Star game tonight on KSMO Radio starting at 7:00.

Funeral services for Thomas Eugene Walker of Bourbon, age 81, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
Memorial services for Robert L. Ferrell of St. James, age 76, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the VFW in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the family. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
Funeral services for Dale Louis Belflower of Anutt, age 76, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Young Community Center.
Graveside services for Blanche Wofford of Salem, age 90, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary.
