An accident happened on Friday around 7:30 in the evening in Dent County on Highway 19 about 4 miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Saturn driven by 17-year old Thomas Schaefer of Pacific crossed the centerline and struck a 1997 Toyota Camry driven by 47-year old Timothy Strayhorn of Troy, nearly head on. Suffering serious injuries was 22-year old Jamison Clemons of Pacific who was riding in the Schaefer vehicle and he was airlifted to the University Hospital in Columbia. Also suffering serious injuries was 43-year old Tracy Strayhorn of Troy, who was riding in the Camry with her husband, and she was also airlifted to the University Hospital in Columbia. Suffering moderate injuries in the accident was Timothy Strayhorn who was taken by the Salem Ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital. Everyone involved were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

 An accident happened Thursday evening at 9:25 in Dent County on Route H about eight miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Ford F-150 driven by 55-year old Patrick Brugger of Salem was traveling eastbound on Route H. The Ford traveled off the right side of the roadway where it impacted a dirt embankment, traveled through a ditch and came to rest. Brugger suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Air Evac helicopter to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Ford sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem. Brugger was cited for a DWI, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway and no seatbelt.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and a shoplifter. On June 11^th at 12:43 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 25-year old Salem female had taken $4,048.10 out of a bank account of another without authorization. On June 12^th at 7:30 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 200 block of East Truman in reference to a theft. The report revealed that an unknown person took numerous items from the yard of the residence valued at $335. On June 16^th at 10:55 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report revealed that a 29-year old Salem male took a bottle of liquor valued at $18.48. Further investigation led to his arrest for stealing and resisting arrest. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On June 18^th at 1:17 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East Roosevelt in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 37-year old Salem male took a Bearcat scanner from a residence. Further investigation led to his arrest. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 72-4242.

4-H Achievement Day will be held today at the Commons in the Youth Building. Achievement Day is a day that all 4-H members from the 4-H clubs in the county get together to share what they had made and learned in 4-H this year. There are several categories including; project exhibits, public speaking, skill-a-thons, fashion revue, judging contests, personal appearance, demonstrations and club skits. Each club is challenged to be represented and participate in Achievement Day. The best exhibits will be selected to be on display in the 4-H Exhibit Building at the Missouri State Fair.

Aaron Miles went 3-for-5, homered, and drove in five runs as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-6, in the rubber match of a three-game set. For the second straight day the Cardinals took a 10-6 lead into the ninth inning, but, unlike in Saturday’s 12-11 10-inning loss, St. Louis was able to hold on Sunday. Troy Glaus went 3-for-4 with a homer and two double, drove in two, and scored three times for St. Louis, which had dropped three of four prior to Sunday, and entered the All-Star Break with a 53-43 mark, in second place in the NL Central. The Cardinals trail the Cubs by 4 ½ games, with the Brewers only a half game behind them. Russ Springer (2-0) picked up the win for getting an out in relief of Joel Pineiro, who gave up six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Franquelis Osoria (3-3) gave up four runs on four hits in only a third of an inning to take the loss for the Pirates. Started Ian Snell was touched for four runs on five hits in five innings. The Card are off until Thursday.

Adrian Beltre reached base on a fluke double in the ninth, and scored the go-ahead run on John Buck’s throwing error in the rundown between third and home, and the Seattle Mariners held on for 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals to salvage the finale of a three-game set. Jeff Clement hit a two-run homer for the Mariners, who had dropped six of seven entering play and enter the All-Star Break with the worst record in the AL at 37-58. Carlos Silva gave up two runs on eight hits in six innings, and Joakim Soria (1-2) took the loss for giving up the unearned run in the ninth. Mike Aviles went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in for Kansas City, which had won three straight, and fell to 43-53 entering the break. The Royals will be off until Thursday as well.

The Salem Football Team and the 12^th Tiger Booster Club are sponsoring a Lift-A-Thon and Bar-B-Que on Friday, July 18^th from 4:30 to 8:30 as a fundraiser to help raise money for the medical expense and rehab expenses for Jake Brooks. Brooks suffered serious injuries in a four-wheeler accident earlier this summer. The event will take place at the high school practice field in conjunction with varsity football camp.
