The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that crews would be out checking roads for washouts and downed trees or limbs.  Purcell said the rest of the District 1 crew would be cutting brush on Dent County Roads 5150 and 5160.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that a crew would be removing downed trees and limbs from Dent County Road 2060 along with repairing washouts on that road and Dent County Roads 3350 and 4050. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles, along with three other county commissioners would be in St. James today interviewing architects for an addition to the Meramec Regional Planning office building.  Skiles also reported on the counties sales tax revenue and for the month of June the county was down $3,589 from June of last year, but for year to date the county is up $4,705 from this time last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues for the August 4^th Election and anyone needing a mail out ballot for the election must request one by July 28^th. Curley wanted to remind everyone that this is a primary election, so you must declare a party to receive a ballot. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting, a mental commitment order, property damage and a burglary. On Monday, July 5th at 2:00 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Lucky Me in the 100 block of West Fourth Street in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report revealed that an unknown female took a lamp valued at $55.00 from the store. On Tuesday, July 6th at 7:00 in the morning, an officer transported a 49-year old Salem male to the Southeast Center for Mental Health in Farmington in lieu of a mental commitment order. At 1:00 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of North Washington in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged a 1998 black Dodge Neon. The value of the damage is $1,274.23. Then at 3:15 that same afternoon, an officer was responded to a residence in the 300 block of East Truman in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence and took a purple Acer mini computer. Anyone with any information regarding the shoplifting, property damage or burglary reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded four traffic fatalities during the month of May of 2010. This is one less fatality than for May of 2009. There were a total of 215 accidents with 102 injuries and five fatalities for May 2009 compared to 203 accidents with 74 injuries and four fatalities in May of 2010. The total fatalities for 2010 are now 12 compared to nine for the same time period last year.In the individual county reports, Crawford County reported that 28 accidents occurred with 10 injuries and one fatality; Dent County recorded 15 accidents with five injuries and one fatality,  Laclede County logged 47 accidents with 14 injuries and no fatalities, Maries County reported  seven accidents occurred in their borders with three injuries, Phelps County recorded 71 accidents with 23 injuries and one fatality, and Pulaski County logged 35 accidents with 19 injuries and one fatality. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, wants to remind Missouri drivers that it is vacation time once again, and children are out of school. With this time of year come heavier traffic, road construction and children playing in yards, parks and playgrounds. Always be prepared for the unexpected while driving. Pay close attention to your driving at all times, watch your speed, wear your seat belt and keep your children safe by securing them in the proper restraints or seat belts. Help make this an enjoyable summer.

Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings reports that an incident occurred at 3:50 in the afternoon on Saturday, July 3rd when a deputy pulled up beside a minivan in a driveway off east Highway 32 after he found the back driver's side of the van partially in the roadway. The deputy began pulling the patrol car behind the vehicle when suddenly the van pulled out in front of two westbound cars and left the scene. The van was later found on Route P off Highway 32 traveling at speeds estimated to be in excess of 95 miles per hour. The van later stopped when it turned into a driveway on Route P. Arrested was Johnathon L. Shults who was taken into custody before being taken to the Dent County Sheriff's Department, where he refused a Breathalyzer test. Schults did admit to have been drinking. He was charged with a Class D felony of resisting arrest, detention or a stop by fleeing creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death to any person. Stallings said that the deputy seized three SKS style magazines from inside the van but no rifle was found.
