The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning without Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles who was absent. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley appointed District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson as Presiding Commissioner for the meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading was being done on Dent County Roads 5490, 5500, 5080, 5085 and 6500, and that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6520. Purcell went on to say that materials were being added to Dent County Road 2470 and that two trucks were hauling creek rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2330, 5260 and 2375 and that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 3260. Larson also stated that materials were being added to Dent County Roads 2375 and 3210 and that one man was hauling creek rock. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley updated the Commissioners on information she had received from Governor Nixon’s office. According to the letter, the Governor’s Office was reducing the Assessment Maintenance Fund by 4%, which results in a cut from $3 per parcel count to $2.88. The reduction of approximately $1,322 will have to be taken in to account in the assessor’s budget. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
Sho-Me Power has scheduled a power outage that will kill electric power to the City of Salem on Tuesday, July 23rd at 10:00 a.m. The outage is projected to last about one hour so the electric should be back on by 11:00 a.m. Sho-Me is repairing the switch gear that turns the power on and off to the city in emergency situations. After Sho-Me Power repairs the switch gear, they will need to put it back in service which means they will again kill power to the City of Salem on Thursday August 1st at 10:00 am. Once again, it should only take one hour for the repairs to be completed, the same as the first outage. If you are a person that is dependent on electricity for medical or for daily living needs, please make alternative arrangements on those days to safeguard your health. The City of Salem and Sho-Me Power apologizes for any inconvenience this causes.
An accident occurred at 7:35 Thursday morning in Phelps County on Interstate 44 at the 172-mile marker in Jerome. According to the highway patrol report, 22-year old Colleen Waymon of St. Clair was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country in the westbound lanes when one of the tires blew out. The vehicle then ran off the right side of the roadway and over-turned. Colleen Waymon and several occupants suffered minor injuries including 1-year old Audrey Waymon of St. Clair, 58-year old Joanne Barclay of Bourbon, ten-year old Cameron Bourgeois of Steelville, 12-year old Kaitlyn Bourgeois of Steelville, and 40-year old Christina Conlee of Steelville. They were all taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Suffering moderate injuries was 14-year old Joseph Bourgeois of Steelville, who was flown by Lifeline Mercy to the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler was totaled and removed by Ron Dishman’s Towing.
An accident occurred at 5:20 Thursday evening in Dent County on Route F about four and a half miles south of Highway 32. According to the highway patrol report, 18-year old James Eingess of Salem was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro southbound at a high rate of speed. The Camaro then crested a hill, causing Eingess to lost control. The vehicle then traveled off the left side of the roadway, drove through a ditch, and struck a tree. Eingess and an occupant, 18-year old Michael Hobson of Salem, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. They were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
Missourians from every corner of the state worked together in April to collect almost 130,000 bags of litter during the 2013 No MOre Trash! Bash. The Bash is an annual event where volunteers and others clean up litter all across state - from roadsides and parks to rivers and streams. With the final reporting now complete, the Missouri departments of Conservation and Transportation report 129,255 bags collected in April during the Bash. Litter poisons fish, birds and other wildlife, along with their habitats, such as rivers, fields and forests. Trash Bash volunteer efforts are essential to prevent that from happening. For MoDOT, litter clean-up is a year-round job, costing the state over $5 million every year. Programs like the Trash Bash and the Adopt-A-Highway program help offset those costs and allow the department to devote resources to other much needed tasks. Edwin Jackson spun seven scoreless innings to help lift the Chicago Cubs past the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, in the opener of a four-game set at Wrigley Field on Thursday. Jake Westbrook (5-4) had an effective outing, but the Cardinals offense was nowhere to be found. He yielded three runs on seven hits and four walks over seven frames. Allen Craig registered two of the four hits for St. Louis, which had a five-game win streak snapped. The Cardinals and Cubs will play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 2:30.
The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez from Triple-A Memphis and optioned right-handed pitcher Michael Blazek. Martinez, 21, is joining the big league club for the second time this season after making seven relief appearances for the Cardinals in May. Martinez joined the Memphis starting rotation following his option on May 27, going 3-2 with a 1.98 ERA in eight starts. He struck out 35 batters in 41.0 innings pitched, walked just 16, and allowed only one home run. He was recently named the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June.
Derek Jeter went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his first game of the season for the New York Yankees, who beat the Kansas City Royals by an 8-4 margin. Salvador Perez had two RBI for the Royals, who left nine men on base. Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar each drove in a run. Kansas City starter Ervin Santana (5-6) gave up eight runs on 10 hits over five-plus frames. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight at 6:05.

Funeral services for Virginia Maude Boudreau of Salem, age 85, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
There will be no funeral services for Donna Marie Whitehead of Salem, age 81. Interment will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for Lillian F. Reed of Columbia, formerly of St. James, age 102, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the College Hills Cemetery.
