A six-year old Steelville boy drowned Saturday afternoon in the Huzzah Creek near the Brickey Low Water Crossing in Steelville. According to the Missouri Water Patrol Report, six-year old Casey Bone of Steelville was seen playing in the water by his parents, but they did no see the boy go underwater. Divers in eight feet of water recovered the body at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson pronounced Casey Bone dead at the scene and the body was taken to the Washington County Memorial Hospital. Bone was not wearing a personal floatation device.

An accident happened in Crawford County on the Mine Road about three miles north of Viburnum at 12:51 Saturday morning. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am driven northwest by 23-year old Heidi A. Pendleton of Steelville, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Pendleton overcorrected, but the Grand Am went off the left side of the roadway, struck a tree and overturned. Pendleton suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to St. Johns Hospital in St. Louis. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing.

An accident happened Sunday morning at 2:04 in Crawford County on the Big Shoal Road just east of Route V. According to the highway patrol report, 30-year old Joshua D. Asher of Davisville was driving a 1997 Ford northbound when the vehicle went off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Asher suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. A passenger, 32-year old Steven McMillen of Davisville, suffered serious injuries and was also taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Asher was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while McMillen was not. The 1997 Ford sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of June. During the month, they wrote 26 traffic tickets, eight warning tickets, two equipment repair orders and they served 19 summons to appear in court. The Salem Police Department investigated 18 accidents, two assaults, three domestic assaults, one report of animal cruelty, one report of child abuse, one report of counterfeiting, and one report of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 25 reports of stealing, four reports of property damage, four reports of disorderly conduct, one report of harassment, one report of identity theft, one report of a missing person, one report of a missing or runaway juvenile, one murder, one report of rape, two reports of refusal to obey a lawful order and six reports of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated one report of possession of marijuana and one report of possession of synthetic drugs.  The police department conducted one death investigation. The police received 1,997 calls for service during the month, handled 209 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 66 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent 30 hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in June included 13 calls for escorts, seven 9-1-1 calls, five intoxicated driver investigation calls, six calls for a suspicious person or vehicle, six calls for peace disturbances, 17 ambulance assist calls, 11 calls for alarms sounding, five calls for fights in progress, seven domestic dispute calls, three reports of prowlers, one call for an intoxicated pedestrian, one fire call and four wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,571 miles during the month and arrested 19 males and six females during the month of June.
