The Salem Police, along with the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted a DWI Checkpoint on July 6th, between 5:15 and 8:30 p.m. As a result of the checkpoint, there were eleven arrests. There was one arrest for possession of cocaine, four arrests for possession of marijuana, three for possession of drug paraphernalia, two for probation violations and one arrest for failure to obey a lawful order of a law enforcement officer.  In addition there were six warning tickets and two summonses issued for equipment and minor traffic violations.

The Salem Police report that on June 30th at approximately 8:36 p.m., an officer was sent to the 100 block of Rhodes Street in reference to a burglary. Investigation of the report revealed that someone entered the residence by force and took a pack of cigarettes. Further investigation led to the detention of a 14 year old male juvenile of Salem for burglary and stealing. The juvenile was released to his parents and the report was forwarded to the juvenile officer. Another call came in on July 6th, at 3:12 p.m. An officer was sent to a residence in the 1300 block of South Water in reference to a burglary. Investigation revealed that a persons or persons unknown entered the residence and took a grim reaper dagger valued at $10, a Green Beret dagger valued at $10 and a black Ninja mini bike valued at $750 and some blank checks. The Salem Police report two stolen vehicles reported in the last few days. The first stolen vehicle was reported on July 5th at 8:45 p.m. at the 1100 block of West Coffman. A person or persons unknown took a silver 1987 Dodge Ram truck from a residence.  The vehicle was located and recovered, parked and unoccupied near Hwy 32 and Dilworth. The report is under investigation. A second vehicle was reported stolen at 3:36 p.m. the same day from the 1100 block of West Hunt. A person or persons unknown took at white 1988 Honda Accord from a residence. The vehicle was located and recovered, parked an unoccupied at the 700 block of South Elmer, along the road, partially in the ditch. The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information on the stolen vehicles are asked to contact the Salem Police at 729-4242.

A total of 37 arrests were made and 60 warnings issued as a result of a sobriety checkpoint held in Crawford County on July 6. This spot-check was conducted from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park by the highway patrol. The arrest totals for the spot-check included three arrests for driving while intoxicated, five arrests for a minor possessing an alcoholic beverage and one arrest for an outstanding felony warrant. Traffic arrests during the operation included 10 citations for failure to wear a seat belt, one for a hazardous moving violation, seven for non-moving traffic offenses, seven for driver’s license violations, and three for not having proper vehicle insurance.

The Salem Police Department has released its report for June 2007. For the month, the department issued 12 traffic tickets, 18 warning tickets, two equipment repair orders and 36 summonses to appear in court. Under reports, the department saw 15 accidents and two leaving the scene of an accident. There were four burglaries, eleven stealing reports, two lost or stolen plates, and three property damage reports. There were four assaults, two domestic assaults and three disorderly conducts. The department reports four possession of marijuana, and two minors in possession of intoxicants. There was one report of harassment, one trespass, two stalking, one missing or runaway juvenile, and three fugitive warrants. There were a total of 27 arrests for the month consisting of 18 males and nine females. Other calls answered by the department included 12 9-1-1 calls, two fire calls, eight ambulance assists, five wrecker needed calls, and four alarms sounding. There were nine calls for intoxicated drivers; four intoxicated pedestrians, and three suspicious persons or vehicles. There were nine peace disturbance calls, three domestic disputes, and one fight in progress. The department also had 32 calls for police escorts. There were 102 calls forwarded to the animal control officer. There were 1,877 calls answered with 149 walk-ins.  The Salem Police spent eight hours in court testifying, seven hours in bailiff duties and drove a total of 9,557 miles for the month of June.

The City of Salem Planning and Zoning Board of Commissioners will be meeting on Monday, July 16th, at 6:45 p.m. to consider a request by Eric and Jackie Schafer for a reviewed use permit for the operation of a Day Care Center at 700 E. Hunt. The meeting is will be held in the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 N. Washington, and the meeting is open to the public.

Major League Baseball returns to action tonight with five games in the American League and one game in the National League.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be off tonight and start a three game series with the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow at Philadelphia, and the Kansas City Royals will be off until tomorrow when they begin a three game series with the Cleveland Indians at Cleveland.

Funeral services for Robert Lee Crabtree Sr. of Affton, MO, age 72, will be this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Lower Indian Creek Cemetery in Viburnum.

Funeral services for Betty Hutson Coppedge of Salem, age 77, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library, Phelps County Hospice or the Salem Christian Church.

Funeral services for Maurice Cape of Steelville, age 96, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Presbyterian Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 this evening at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edwin Henry Williams of Steelville, age 88, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time on Saturday. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jessie Lowell Hinson of Rolla, formerly of Salem, age 81, will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be after 11:00 until time for the service. Interment will be in the Crossville Cemetery in Bunker with Full Military Honers.
