A fire destroyed a church in Dent County Wednesday morning. The Lenox Rural Fire Department was dispatched to the Anutt United Methodist Church, located near the intersection of Highways O and C, at 9:07 that morning. Lenox was then joined at the scene by the Dent County Fire Protection District, Edgar Springs Fire Protection District, and Rolla Rural Fire Protection District. The Dent County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Salem Memorial District Hospital also sent personnel to the church. No one was in the church at the time of the fire and nobody was injured. The Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
An accident occurred Monday at 5:40 in the early evening in Shannon County on Route 19 about five miles north of Timber. According to the highway patrol report a 1983 Honda motorcycle driven by 35-year old Roger Counts of Salem was traveling north on 19, ran off the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver. Counts suffered moderate injuries and was transported by EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Honda sustained moderate damage and was removed by the owner.
The Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) board will not meet in July. The board meets monthly, August through June, the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting of the MRPC board will be Thursday, August 8th. Formed in 1969, MRPC is a voluntary council of governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities. A professional staff of 25, directed by the MRPC board, offers technical assistance and services, such as grant preparation and administration, housing assistance, transportation planning, environmental planning, ordinance codification, business loans and other services to member communities. State Auditor Tom Schweich released the audit of the Early Childhood Development, Education and Care Fund. In the areas audited, the overall performance of this entity was Poor. The audit showed that the Department of Social Services (DSS) needs to improve its procedures for funding Start Up and Expansion (SUE) childcare facilities. Three childcare facilities receiving new funding awards in fiscal years 2010 and 2011 stopped participating in the program but did not repay $171,500 the facilities had received. One facility received $22,500 to operate an in-home child care facility that no children attended, another received $60,000 to create 16 licensed slots at a new center, but the facility was never built, and the money was not repaid, and DSS paid the third facility $89,000 to add 24 slots, but the owner only added 14 slots and then sold the facility three months later to a buyer who chose not to participate in the SUE program. The DSS also paid the Accreditation Facilitation contractor for more facilities than the contractor reported serving and paid more per-unit than the contract required. The previous Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Office of Early and Extended Learning simultaneously served as the Director of a DESE and DSS contractor. The contractor, the Center for Family Policy and Research at the University of Missouri-Columbia, was funded in part by the Early Childhood Development, Education and Care (ECDEC) Fund. The Assistant Commissioner served from April 2010 until August 2012 and remains employed by the DESE. During the Assistant Commissioner's tenure, both state agencies awarded this contractor additional contracts without using a competitive process, resulting in an apparent conflict of interest.
The contracts for the majority of 182 Missouri license offices will soon be up for renewal, providing interested individuals and groups with an opportunity to operate one or more of the license offices located throughout the state. All of the license offices were put out for bid under the competitive procurement process in 2009. Contracts were awarded for one year with three one-year renewal options. The move toward a competitive procurement process of the license offices overhauled the way local motor vehicle and driver’s license offices are awarded and was one of the first actions of Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration. Bidders must have an active Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). The Department of Revenue, through the Office of Administration, will post a Request for Proposal (RFP) for each of the license offices in the coming weeks. Interested bidders will have approximately four weeks to bid on operating any of the offices. Bids will be evaluated on areas such as expertise of the personnel proposed, methods proposed for performing the services and whether the individual or entity is a not-for profit, political subdivision, a Missouri Certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), a Women Business Enterprise (WBE) or a Missouri Service-Disabled Veteran Enterprise.

Matt Carpenter's two-run home run in the seventh inning was the difference as the St. Louis Cardinals slid past the Houston Astros, 5-4, in the finale of a two-game interleague series at Busch Stadium. Matt Holliday had two hits and drove in a pair of runs while Matt Adams added an RBI for the Cardinals, who extended their winning streak to five games. Shelby Miller yielded three runs on five hits and five walks over five innings. The Cardinals will start a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30.
Robinson Cano belted a three-run homer and Lyle Overbay broke the contest open with a grand slam, as the New York Yankees pounded the Kansas City Royals, 8-1, to end a three-game losing streak. Eric Hosmer drove in the only run with a double in the eighth inning and Wade Davis (4-8) was pounded for six hits and eight runs over five-plus innings for the Royals, who will play the Yankees again today.
The Edmonton Oilers acquired forward David Perron from the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday. Heading to the Gateway City will be forward Magnus Paajarvi and a second-round draft choice in 2014. Perron completed his sixth NHL campaign by posting 10 goals and 25 points while participating in all 48 regular-season games, but contributed only two assists in six playoff appearances. Paajarvi recorded nine goals and 16 points in 42 games a season ago. The 22-year-old has totaled 26 goals and 58 points in 163 contests over the past 3 seasons.

Funeral services for Virginia Maude Boudreau of Salem, age 85, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
There will be no funeral services for Donna Marie Whitehead of Salem, age 81. Interment will be at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
