Roadwork will be performed this week in the immediate driving area. In Crawford County, I-44 from Route H to the Phelps County line will have pavement rehabilitation continuing in the westbound lanes through early December. One westbound lane will be open in the work area. Also in Crawford County, Route KK between the I-44 south outer road and Route ZZ will have a partial surface overlay take place today and tomorrow. Route CC between Highway 19 and Route C will have partial surface overlay take place on Wednesday, July 13^th and Thursday, July 14^th. One lane will be open and crews will flag traffic through the work area. In Crawford and Phelps Counties, partial surface overlay will take place today through Thursday, July 14^th on Route YY between Route M in Crawford County and Highway 68 in Phelps County. There will be one lane open and crews will flag traffic through the work area. In Dent County, Route K between Highway 19 and the Shannon County line will have partial surface overlay through Wednesday, July 20^th. Route N between Highway 19 and the end of state maintenance will have a partial surface overlay take place today through Thursday, July 14^th with one lane open and crews will flag traffic through the work area. The Dent County Fall Festival will again host a hay contest for the 2011 fair. This contest, sponsored by the Dent County Cattlemen's Association and University of Missouri Extension, will have variety of classes for small square and large round bales. Cash prizes will go to the top five places in each class, and this year there will be bonus money for best of show. The deadline for entries for the contest is July 22^nd. This will allow time for the sampling and analysis prior to the fair. There is an entry fee of $25 for each entry. Exhibitors will receive a full hay test analysis of their entries following the fair that they use to make management decisions for their hay. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is accepting applications for the next class of conservation agent trainees. MDC’s Protection Division will select a handful of candidates from hundreds of applicants. These select candidates will then undergo 26 weeks of intense training in all facets of law enforcement and resource management. Those who make the grade will receive county assignments and become the face of conservation in their assigned communities – enforcing the Wildlife Code of Missouri and helping the public with such issues as nuisance wildlife and land management. To qualify, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to the natural sciences or criminal justice. The application deadline is Friday, July 22^nd. Be sure and finish up all those 4-H projects and bring them out to the Dent County 4-H Achievement Day on Monday, July 18^th at the Commons in Salem. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this event. Family and friends are also welcome to come, watch and support their 4-H’er. Registration starts at 12:30 and the Open Assembly will be at 1:00. At 1:15 will be the project exhibit judging, personal talks and judging tables. There will be demonstrations and public speaking at 2:45, skits will be performed at 4:00 and the Awards Ceremony will be held at 4:30. The best exhibits will be selected for display in 4-H building at the Missouri State Fair. There will also be a Special Section for all Clover Kids to display the items they made in their projects this year.

An accident occurred on Wednesday, June 29^th at 3:05 in the afternoon on Margaret Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, Gavin Mayfield of Salem was riding a Huffy bike and exited the Holiday Inn parking lot onto Margaret Street and made contact with a 2009 Nissan Rogue driven by Barbara Roderman of Salem. Mayfield suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The Huffy bike sustained moderate damage, but the Nissan sustained no apparent damage.

Football camp will start today at Salem High School. Camp for grades 7 – 9 will be held July 11^th through July 15^th from 9:00 am to 11:15 am and will meet in the high school weight room each morning. Camp for Grades 10 – 12 will be held July 11^th through July 22^nd from 5:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Cost for each is $25.

David Freese clubbed a two-run homer to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a four-game series at Busch Stadium. Freese added a sacrifice fly for the Cardinals, who salvaged a split after dropping the first two games of this set. Jaime Garcia (9-3) gave up a two-run homer to Arizona's Ryan Roberts among seven hits over six innings. Lance Lynn tossed two innings of relief before Fernando Salas closed the door in the ninth for his 16th save of the season. The Cards will be off until Friday night when they start a ten-game road trip.

Matt Holiday will particiapte in the Home Run Derby to be held tonight in Arizona in the festivities held prior to the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

After scoring 13 runs on Saturday, the Kansas City Royals were held to just one, but that's what happens when teams face Detroit's Justin Verlander. Verlander (12-4) threw 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball as the Tigers took a 2-1 win over the Royals in the finale of a four-game series. Jeff Francis (3-10) had one of his better starts of the season but still suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits. He also struck out a season-high six batters for the Royals, who are 11 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central cellar. The only run the Royals got was on a throwing error. The Royals will play again Thursday night at Minnesota.

The St. Louis Blues has signed veteran forward Jason Arnott to a one-year contract. The 36-year-old has also played in 115 playoff games with 72 points and a Stanley Cup Championship with the New Jersey Devils in 2000. Arnott played in 73 games between the Devils and the Washington Capitals last season, totaling 31 points.

The St. Louis Blues dipped into the veteran well again, signing forward Jamie Langenbrunner to a one-year deal. He finished the campaign with nine goals and 32 points in 70 combined regular- season games, his lowest goal total for a full season in his 16-year career. In addition, his combined minus-18 was the worst in his pro tenure.
