The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. The Commission first heard from Wanda Jaudes who lives on Dent County Road 3300. She was asking about FEMA money available to get her road back into shape from the storms. Commissioner Gary Larson stated that the county will be having a meeting with FEMA about the damage but until then the county will be able to do some more work out there to get the road into better shape.  Representatives from the Democratic Central Committee met the Commission in regards to the replacement of Jessica Sparks. The Committee would interview possible applicants and make a recommendation for a new prosecutor to the Governor. The Committee was asking about what the new prosecutor would face so they can choose an individual who would be right for the position. The Commission stated that the Committee should visit the PA’s office to find out the caseload, and answer any questions they may have. In the road report, Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that crews are in Bunker again cleaning up debris still left from the May 8^th storm. They should be done within the week. Crews will also be grading Dent County Roads 6600, 6610, and 4210 in District 1. Hauling rock and grading will also be done on Dent County Road 6620. In District 2, crews will be doing bridge repairs and pouring concrete on Dent County Road 4050. That road will be closed until the 13^th, and will be re-open on Monday. Crews will be installing pipes and hauling rock on Dent County Roads 2540 and 4050.  Commissioner Gary Larson will be traveling to Boss to look at a bridge that may need repair on Dent County Road 5510. In other business, Martha Sellers, the Prosecuting Attorney dealing with child support in Crawford County, brought the Child Support Annual Cooperative and Supplemental Agreement for the county. The Commission approved the agreement. The Commission also opened bids for the carpeting of the second floor in the Dent County Judicial building. Three bids were received and they were from Toman’s, Carpet Plus and Southtown Furniture. The Commission will review the bids today and make a decision by Monday. In the Commissioners meeting Monday evening, the Commission approved the bid from Morton Construction for flooring and ADA office doors for the judicial building for $16,700. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the station. After bills were discussed and approved, it was noted that the 2010 budget should be started this month, the workman’s comp has been paid and the insurance policy was reviewed and approved for $8,844.00 to be paid. During the calendar review a report was given on the progress of the appreciation dinner for the firefighters that will be held on July 16^th at 7:00 pm. In old business, the drug and alcohol policy #17 and the training policy #16 were read and a motion was made to incorporate into policies. The Board then voted to go into Executive Session. After returning from Executive Session in new business, the chief’s evaluation and pay increase for the year 2009 were addressed. The Board reviewed statements, comments and ratings from all firefighters and officers and after discussion, the Board decided on a 1.5% pay increase for Chief Nash. The Board then discussed purchasing a vehicle for in town work that would not be as expensive to drive and maintain as the fire trucks for gas leak calls and to run errands, etc. The money to spend would not exceed $2,500 and would come from Capitol Improvement money and the motion was made and carried. Chief Nash then reported on the new tanker truck that is currently waiting for parts and lettering, with bids still out on the lettering. A projected completion date is August 1^st. Nash then asked the Board to possibly get on the agenda for the Alderman meeting to discuss electric. The Board then set next months meeting for Tuesday, August 11^th at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Dent County Commissioners would like to remind all county residents that after October 1^st the post office will no longer forward mail sent to old rural route addresses. The post office has continued to deliver mail to both the old rural route addresses and the new physical address for the past year. After October 1^st, mail addressed to the old rural route addresses will be returned to sender as unable to be forwarded. Also the County Assessor’s Office is in the process of coordinating the mailing of real estate and personal property tax bills and would like residents to please call their office at 729-6010 to update their address. This is to ensure that your property tax bill is mailed to the correct address. Your mailing address may be different than the property address, if you own more than one property. Real estate and personal property tax bills are mailed by November 10^th and are due by December 31^st. Payments received after December 31^st will have penalties applied. The Dent County Commission contracted with the Salem TCRC to provide rural addresses to area residents. If any resident has not received their new address, they should contact the Salem TCRC at 729-8163.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Velta L. Stroder of Salem, age 75, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery.
