The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday without Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles who was on vacation. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley appointed District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell as Presiding Commissioner for the meeting. In the hearing of persons, Leo Tayloe brought in a signed petition by the residents of Dent County Road 5220 to establish a speed limit of 25 MPH on the road. The commissioners approved the request. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the sales tax receipts received from the state for the first seven months of the year. She said that for the period January through July, the total sales tax receipts this year is $7,589.24 less than for the same seven-month period in 2012. She also reported that sales tax distribution collections are down $15,735.97 from last month and that is almost a 2% reduction. In the road report, Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5170, 6220, 6350 and 6490. He indicated that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 6230, and that brush would be cut on county road 6670. Purcell said that two men would be hauling brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson gave the road report for his district that included the grading of Dent County Roads 2360, 3270 and 4380, while brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3200. Larson also said that a man would be hauling creek gravel. Dent County Clerk Curley said that her office and the Dent County Treasurer balanced on all accounts for June, plus her office balanced with the Collector’s office and Assessor’s office on all June collections, add-ons and abatements. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop I, Rolla, recorded four traffic fatalities investigated by Troop I officers during the month of May 2013. This is the same amount as in May 2012. There were 168 accidents with 63 injuries and four fatalities during the month of May in 2013, compared to 156 accidents with 71 injuries and four fatalities for the month of May in 2012. In Crawford County, there were 24 accidents with eight injuries reported; in Dent County, 10 accidents occurred with seven injuries and one fatality, while in Laclede County, there were 46 accidents with 25 injuries and one fatality reported. In Maries County, there were 11 accidents with five injuries recorded; in Phelps County, 37 accidents with seven injuries occurred, while Pulaski County had 40 accidents reported with 11 injuries and two fatalities.  

Seventeen people died in traffic crashes during the 2013 July Fourth holiday counting period. The counting period began at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, July 3rd and ended at 11:59 pm on Sunday, July 8th. The Missouri State Highway Patrol worked 358 traffic crashes in which 13 people died and 157 were injured. Troopers arrested 199 people for driving while intoxicated during this year's 102-hour holiday counting period. During last year's 30-hour counting period, troopers worked 99 traffic crashes in which three people died and 45 were injured. Troopers arrested 59 people for driving while intoxicated last year. Statewide, in 2012, there were 385 traffic crashes, in which four people died and 194 were injured. There were zero boating fatalities over the 2013 July Fourth counting period. Troopers investigated 17 boating crashes involving 11 injuries. Three people apparently drowned on Missouri waterways. Troopers also arrested 17 people for boating while intoxicated over the holiday counting period. During the 2012 July Fourth weekend, officers investigated six boating crashes, which included two injuries and no fatalities. One person drowned, two people were electrocuted, and seven people were arrested for boating while intoxicated during last year’s July Fourth weekend. Of the 13 fatalities investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, five occurred in the Troop A, Lee's Summit, area; one occurred in the Troop B, Macon, area; four occurred in the Troop C, Weldon Spring, area; one each occurred in the Troop D, Springfield, area, Troop G, Willow Springs, area, and Troop I, Rolla, area. Two people apparently drowned on July 4th at the Smithville Lake in Clinton County. One person apparently drowned on Friday, July 5th. The incident occurred in the Weldon Spring area.

Roadwork continues in our area. In Crawford County, roadway maintenance will take continue on Route M between Highway 8 and Route YY and Route VV between Highway 19 and Route M through Thursday, July 11th. Roadside maintenance will also take continue on Highway 49 between Sellers Road and Adams Road through Thursday, July 11th. Pavement replacement will take place on Route T between Highway 8 and the end of state maintenance now through Thursday, July 11th. Roadway resurfacing and widening of shoulders is under way on Highway 19 between Highway 49 and the Salem city limits. The project is scheduled for completion in fall of this year. In Dent County, roadway resurfacing and widening of shoulders is under way on Highway 32 between Highway 72 and the Salem city limits. The project is also scheduled for completion in fall of this year. In Phelps County, roadway resurfacing and signal upgrades will continue on Highway 72 between Highway 63 and County Road 5220. This project is scheduled for completion in winter of this year. During each of these projects, one lane will be open and crews will flag traffic through the work area.

An accident occurred Monday morning at 6:45 in Reynolds County on Highway 72 about a mile west of Reynolds. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Nissan Exterra driven by 56-year old Karen Salsman of Boss was traveling westbound on Highway 72. The accident occurred as the Nissan ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Salsman suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Air Evac to Poplar Bluff Regional. According to the report, it is unknown if Salsman was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan Exterra sustained moderate damage and towed by Hill’s Motors in Ellington.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will start a two-game series with the Houston Astros tonight. The Cardinals are 53-34 on the year and currently hold a ½ game lead over the Pirates for the lead in the NL Central. Adam Wainwright will take the mound looking for his 12th win of the year. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:40.

Billy Butler homered to help the Kansas City Royals to a 5-1 win over the New York Yankees in the opener of a four-game series. Jeremy Guthrie (8-6) scattered six hits and gave up a run over 6 2/3 innings. The Royals and Yankees will play again tonight at 6:05.

Funeral services for Clinton Virgil Todd of Salem, age 82, will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 12:00 until the service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Clinton Todd Family.

Funeral services for Virginia Maude Boudreau of Salem, age 85, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.

There will be no funeral services for Donna Marie Whitehead of Salem, age 81. Interment will be at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
