The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, Ray Gollhoffer would like to discuss the lift station at the Ranch Motel, Bob Roper will address the old electric department bucket truck, and Charles Midyett will talk about property located at the junction of Highways J and 72. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will then discuss items concerning the city and Aldermen Kenneth Nash, Jerry Randell, Haydn Powell, and Philip Giacomelli will also address items concerning the city. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report in regards to items concerning the city. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Resolutions 14 through 19 will be presented to the Board. They authorize the mayor to execute an agreement between the city and the Salem TCRC, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Salem Area Community Betterment Association, Dent County Museum, Dent County University of Missouri Extension Council, and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission for technical assistance. In new and miscellaneous business the Board will address the asbestos report of the Old Middle School, the proposed salary schedule, a proposed revision to the employee manual, and the approval of bills over $3,000. The Board may then vote to go into closed cession to discuss litigation, real estate, personnel and contracts. The meeting of the Board of Alderman is open to the public.

One person was killed when a severe storm passed through Cuba on Saturday night. According to Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson, 28-year old Kayla Martin was sitting in her car on the parking lot of Alps Grocery store when flying debris from the storm crashed through the windshield of her car and struck her in the chest. Martin had pulled into the parking lot during the storm to get off of the road. She was parked next to her brother and was talking with him on her cell phone when the debris struck her car. Martin was still conscious when EMS arrived on the scene. She died in the ambulance on the way to Phelps County Regional Hospital in Rolla. Martin was engaged to be married and was the mother of two children. She had given birth to a daughter just two weeks ago and also had a son. She was a 2002 graduate of Steelville and was just leaving her job as manager of the Phillips 66 Gas Mart in Cuba to go home at the time of her death. Her brother was also injured in the incident. His injuries are not believed to life threatening.  

An accident occurred at 2:20 Friday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway V about three miles north of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford F150 driven by 51-year old Scott F. Lautenbach of St. James failed to negotiate a curve, traveled across the centerline, off the left side of the roadway, and overturned. Lautenbach suffered serious injuries and was taken by St. Johns Lifeline to the University Hospital in Columbia. Lautenbach was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The F150 was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

Three people died in traffic crashes during the 2012 July Fourth holiday counting period. The counting period began at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, July 3rd and ended at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, July 4th. The Missouri State Highway Patrol worked 99 crashes in which three people died and 45 were injured. Troopers arrested 59 people for driving while intoxicated during this year’s holiday counting period. During last year’s counting period, troopers worked 259 traffic crashes in which eight people died and 130 were injured. There were no boating fatalities over the 2012 July Fourth counting period. However, troopers investigated six boating crashes involving two injuries. One person drowned on Missouri waterways and two people were electrocuted. Troopers also arrested 7 people for boating while intoxicated over the holiday counting period. Of the three fatalities investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, one fatality occurred in Troop I, which is around the Rolla area.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released a few reports. On Saturday, June 23rd at 8:15 in the morning, dispatch was notified that a break-in had occurred at a residence on County Road 5150. The door to the building had been forced open and the glass in the door was shattered. The victim advised the department that there was a tray of small diamonds, valued at $10,500; and sapphires and rubies valued at $150 missing. That same day, deputies responded to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for a report of an assault that had occurred in the 3000 block of County Road 2510. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a juvenile was the reported victim. Suspect information was given and the investigation is ongoing. Rafael Furcal hit a game-winning, bases-loaded single with two down in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, lifting the Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Marlins in the rubber match of a three-game series. Furcal also had an RBI single in the fifth while starter Joe Kelly went six innings giving up only an unearned run on two hits for St. Louis. Kelly struck out five and walked five. The Cardinals go into the All-Star break with a 46-40 record and are third in the NL Central, 2 ½ games behind the Pirates.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed catcher Yadier Molina on the bereavement list and recalled catcher Bryan Anderson from Triple-A Memphis. Anderson, 25, was batting .210 with two home runs and 21 RBI in 64 games for Memphis this season. Additionally, Matt Holliday has been selected to replace Molina on the National League's active roster for the All-Star Game, to be held on Tuesday.

Max Scherzer tossed seven outstanding innings on Sunday and the Detroit Tigers wrapped up the first half of the 2012 season with a 7-1 win over the Kansas City Royals to finish off a three-game sweep at Comerica Park. Salvador Perez accounted for the lone run with a home run for the Royals, who have dropped eight of their last 10 contests. Everett Teaford (1-2) was tagged for the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 frames. The Royals go into the All-Star break with a 37-47 record and are fourth in the AL Central, 9 ½ games behind the White Sox.

Funeral services for Matilda A. Nowicki of High Ridge and formerly of Rosati, age 92, will be held this morning at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Rosati. Interment will be in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Rosati. A remembrance gathering will be held Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Chapel Hill Mortuary in Cedar Hill. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials may be made to the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church or Cemetery in Rosati.

Funeral services for Kayla Ann Martin of Steelville, age 28, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to the Children’s Educational Fund.

Funeral services for Donald Baird of Hobson, MO., age 80, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Hobson Community Church in Hobson. Visitation will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carty Cemetery.

Funeral services for Gene Schafer of Salem, age 85, will be Monday. July 16th at 11:00 am at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday July 15th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Green Forest Cemetery.
