Bring your lawn chairs to 4th Street and enjoy visiting with friends and neighbors during the Salem Street Festival, tonight from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Pseudo Blues Band, and food vendors will be selling ice cream, sodas, barbeque, taco salads, Popsicles and more.  Crafts and Salem Sesquicentennial souvenirs will also be available during the street fest. Salem Historical Walking tour brochures will be available to guide residents to the photo collages and utility pole signs that show historic 4th Street businesses and buildings.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Craig Ruble of Ruble Engineering spoke with the commissioners about the new wall plat maps of the county and the new plat map booklets. He said that he has corrected the names and the road numbers on the maps which also includes lakes and streams. He said that the wall maps should be ready by July 15th or within a day or two, but that the plat map booklets will be about 30 days late. Ruble had promised the commission that the wall plat maps and booklets would be ready by July 15th when they accepted his bid. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that it was too dry to grade so work crews will be doing ditch work on Dent County Road 6080 and hauling rock to that road as well. He said that brush cutting would be done on Dent County Road 5150. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers are installing two pipes on Dent County 2050, and are also installing a pipe and grading Dent County Road 3180. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that Dent County had a vacancy on the Meramec Regional Development Corporation and he has nominated Doug Barnes to fill the vacancy. Skiles also participated in the conference call meeting of the MRPC to re-capitalize the capital loan fund. The commission then agreed to set Tuesday, July 20th at 7:00 at the Dent  County Judicial Building as the next date and time for the next quarterly meeting of the commissioners. Commissioner Purcell reported that the county did not receive a bid on the 1994 Ford F-250 pickup truck that was advertised in the Salem News as surplus property. The county agreed to open the floor to bids again as people have shown interest in the truck. The truck specifications and the placing of a bid must follow the protocol that was already published in the Salem News. Bids on the truck will be opened at 10:30 on July 19th. At the last meeting, Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock spoke with commission about increasing the Tourism Bond by $25,000 on the Dent County Collector, Dent County Treasurer and their deputies. The commissioners agreed to increase the bond and the additional cost would be paid from the Tourism Fund. Tim Connell from Connell Insurance also stopped by to talk about workman’s comp insurance. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a city warrant, leaving the scene of the accident, theft, a felony warrant and a stolen vehicle. On Thursday, July 1st at 9:15 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a subject with a warrant for his arrest. A 32-year old Salem man turned himself in on the warrant from the City of Salem, posted bond and was released. On Friday, July 2nd at 9:30 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East Bryan in reference to a leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem man for driving while in a drugged condition, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of narcotics and for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. At 10:00 Saturday morning, an officer was contacted via telephone at the station in reference to the theft of items from a motor vehicle. The complainant stated a 2007 Chevy Malibu was parked on West Rolla Road and during that time various items valued at $25 were stolen from the unsecured vehicle. At 10:30 that same morning, officers made contact with a 43-year old Salem man in the 1000 block of West Franklin in reference to a felony warrant for his arrest out of Franklin County. He was placed under arrest on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition to Franklin County. Then at 10:40 that same morning, an officer was dispatched to the 900 block of North Park in reference a stolen vehicle. The investigation revealed that a 1991 gray Pontiac Grand Am had been parked and left unsecured with the keys in the vehicle. The car was taken by a person or persons unknown with out the permission of the owner. Ubaldo Jimenez worked eight solid innings and Jason Giambi chipped in with four hits and two runs batted in to lead Colorado to a 4-2 win over St. Louis in the last of a three-game set. Jimenez (15-1) yielded a lone run on three hits while walking two and striking out six. Chris Carpenter (9-3) absorbed the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits over six frames, while walking two and striking out three for the Cardinals, who have lost four out of five. John Jay had two hits and a RBI in the game while Albert Pujols doubled and scored. The Red Birds will be in Houston this weekend to face the Astros starting at 6:45 tonight, 5:45 Saturday night and 12:55 on Sunday.

The Kansas City Royals were off yesterday and will be in Chicago this weekend to face the White Sox. The Royals have won their last four series.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Anyone interested can pickup a form at the Salem High School or call Coach Davison at 729-4208.

LeBron James made the rumors a reality on Thursday, mirroring fellow free agents Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh by declaring his intentions to join the Miami Heat.

Graveside services for Frieda Emily Hamilton of Rolla, age 92, will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Shannon County, Missouri. Memorials may be made to Timber Volunteer Fire Department. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Donald P. Whitaker of Salem, age 86, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dry Fork Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Burton Eugene Brown of Rolla, formerly of Michigan, age 91, are incomplete at but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
