The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday at the Salem TCRC. The board approved the Internet usage policy for the police department that will be adopted in all the employee handbooks. Alderman Bill Riley asked why the pool was closed on July 4^th and he was told when no one shows up at the pool after a specific length of time the pool would shut down for the day. Only one person was at the pool for over a half hour when the decision was made to close the pool. Alderman Jim McDaniels says the crowd to see the fireworks was probably the second largest in Salem’s history of shooting fireworks. He also wanted to thank all those who volunteered their time, the media, and all those who made donations that totaled $1,575. He said the rains from the night before and the fog held back vendors, and the car show had a light turnout, but he said that the response from the people involved were all positive. Alderman Nash asked about the back gate at the city park being closed during ball games and Mayor Gary Brown said that it was open when he checked it, but it doesn’t mean that it couldn’t have been closed later. Brown said that the Bonebrake Center would not let the city cross their property to repair the sewer line with the Insituform until a settlement can be reached with the city on easements and for damages to the property in a previous administration. If no agreement can be reached, Brown said the city would just do the areas surrounding the property. He said that bids will be advertised for the airport taxiway and lighting and those bids will be due July 30^th. He said that the asphalt company will need three days notice before coming to the city, and that the price of asphalt has gone from $53 per ton to $70 per ton. Brown said that the electric bill from Sho-Me Power for the month of June was $320,608.30 compared to the 2007 bill for the month of June of $222,647.91. The board then watched a demonstration of the new City of Salem, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and Dent County website that will soon be launched by Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs. Ray Walden then showed a power point presentation of how the Salem TCRC was created and what it does for the community. Mayor Gary Brown then appointed new members, Paul Dingess, Betty Morrison, Bill Riley and Jerry Craig to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Larry Adamick to the Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment, Kenneth Nash to the Utility Committee, and David Massengale to the Tree Board. Any other Boards remained the same. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.

An accident happened on Friday, July 4^th at 6:23 in the evening on Highway 32 at Missouri in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a maroon 1996 GMC 1500 Yukon driven by 31-year old Jeffrey Manthey of Salem was traveling westbound on Highway 32 approaching the Boom Town private drive. At that time, a maroon 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan SE driven by 69-year old Marla Garner of Salem was making a left turn onto Highway 32 from Boom Town private drive and contact was made with the GMC. Garner and 28-year old Jeri Washington suffered moderate injuries, 3-year old Kailyn Washington, 5-year old Brycen Washington, 9-year old Eric Washington and 2-year old Nathan Washington suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Manthey and passengers, 31-year old Shandy Manthey, 4-year old Allison Manthey and 7-year old Caden Manthey suffered minor injuries and were taken by private means to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem. The Dent County Fire Protection District aided the Salem Memorial District Hospital in patient care and brought the scene under control by 6:50

Joel Pineiro and three St. Louis relievers combined on a six-hit shutout, while Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick each homered, as the Cardinals topped Philadelphia, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park. Pineiro (3-4) blanked the Phillies over 6 1/3 innings, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out three. The right-hander snapped a nine- start winless streak stretching back to an April 29 win over the Reds. Ryan Franklin tossed a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Adam Kennedy added a double for the Cardinals, who have won two of their last three. St. Louis won despite picking up just five hits, thanks largely to three timely double plays in the field. Mark Mulder (0-0) will make his first start of the year for the Cardinals tonight after a pair of relief appearances when he takes on Phillies rookie J.A. Happ (0-0) at 5:45 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Orlando Cabrera went 2-for-6 and drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning, as the Chicago White Sox outlasted the Kansas City Royals, 8-7, in the opener of a three-game set. David DeJesus and Matt Aviles both had two RBI for the Royals, who have dropped four of five. Jose Guillen had a triple in defeat. Kyle Davies lasted 5 2/3 innings for KC and yielded three runs on nine hits. Robinson Tejeda (0-1) absorbed the loss as he gave up a run on three hits over the final two frames. The Royals and White Sox play again tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.
