An accident occurred in Crawford County on Little Shoal Creek Road 15 miles East of Steelville July 4th that left three people with serious injuries. According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2005 Honda 500 ATV, driven by 36 year-old John H. Allen of St. Louis, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway, down an embankment, and into a creek bed ejecting all three passengers.  Sustaining serious injuries were eight year-old Elena Allen and 9 year-old Gavin Allen, both of whom were flown to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. John Allen also sustained serious injuries and was flown to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.  According to the report both Elena and Gavin were wearing safety devices, but John Allen was not. The ATV sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

An accident occurred in Phelps County on Friday on Route K five miles South of Edgar Springs.  According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2008 Chevrolet HHR, driven by 52 year-old Kimbra H. Casso of Edgar Springs, ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a bluff, and then caught fire. Casso sustained minor injuries and was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center by Phelps County Ambulance.  According to the report she was wearing a safety restraint.  The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Lucas Garage.

An accident occurred at 3:00 am Saturday in Crawford County on Lick Creek Road 1 ½ miles southwest of Leasburg. According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2002 Dodge Dakota, driven by 33 year-old Dempsey A. Callahan of Cuba, traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned coming to rest on its side.  Callahan sustained minor injuries and was taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center by North Crawford Ambulance. According to the report Callahan was wearing a seat restraint.  The Dodge sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Brad’s Towing.

An accident occurred on Saturday at 5:25 in the evening in Dent County on 4414 County Road 2050 on private property. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Can-Am 4-wheeler ATV driven by 14-year old Madison Hansen of Rolla was driving the ATV in a field when the left front bumper of the ATV struck a tree, causing the handlebars to strike the driver. Hansen suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Salem Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

An accident occurred at 5:00 Sunday evening in Crawford County on Route Y about four miles north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, 41-year old Rayetta Gill of Salem was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. Gill then overcorrected, returned to the roadway, and lost control. The vehicle then slid off the left side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned. Gill suffered moderate injuries and was taken Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep was totaled and removed from the scene by Blackies Auto Service of Viburnum.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will hold its monthly meeting at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 9th in Rolla.  The meeting will be held in the council chambers at City Hall located at 901 North Elm Street.  The public is invited to attend. Rolla Mayor William S. Jenks, III; Phelps County Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp; and Meramec Regional Planning Commission Executive Director Bonnie Prigge are scheduled to give presentations. More information about the commission can be found at: www.modot.org/about/commission.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is accepting applications for its next class of conservation agent trainees. MDC’s Protection Division will select a handful of candidates from hundreds of applicants. The 10-member training class is scheduled to begin March 1, 2014. Selected candidates will then undergo 26 weeks of intense training in all facets of law enforcement and resource management. Those who make the grade will receive county assignments and become the face of conservation in their assigned communities – enforcing the Wildlife Code of Missouri and helping the public with issues such as nuisance wildlife and land management. Duties and responsibilities include law enforcement, public relations and education, wildlife management, fisheries management, forest management and other department activities. To qualify, applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Fisheries Management, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Agriculture, or other related biological sciences, or closely related natural resource subjects. The application deadline is July 19. Matt Holliday hit a solo homer and Lance Lynn spun seven strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Miami Marlins, 3-2, to complete a three-game sweep at Busch Stadium. Lynn (11-3) gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out seven to earn his first win since June 20. Allen Craig added an RBI and Carlos Beltran had two hits and stole home for the Cardinals. Edward Mujica worked a perfect ninth inning to notch his 23rd save of the season. The Cards have the day off today.

Josh Reddick had a two-run home run as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Kansas City Royals, 10-4. Alex Gordon and George Kottaras each had a home run while Mike Moustakas and Miguel Tejada drove in one run apiece for the Royals. The Royals will start a four-game series with the New York Yankees tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals had five players selected to the 2013 MLB All-Star Game, including two starters. Yadier Molina will be starting at catcher while Carlos Beltran will be a starting outfielder. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright, first baseman Allen Craig, and second baseman Matt Carpenter were also selected. The Kansas City Royals had two players selected as well. Outfielder Alex Gordon and and catcher Salvador Perez will represent the Royals.

The Calgary Flames have acquired defenseman Kris Russell from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Calgary's fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft. Russell played in 33 games this past season, recording one goal and six assists. The Blues also signed center Maxim Lapierre to a two-year contract, signed forward Keith Aucoin to a one-year contract, and agreed to terms on a one-year contract with center Derek Roy.

Funeral services for Clinton Virgil Todd of Salem, age 82, will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 12:00 until the service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Clinton Todd Family.
