The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5150 and 6490, and repair work would be done on a brush cutter. Purcell also said that the southern part of the county received heavy wind and up to three inches of rain in some places Wednesday afternoon, so a crew would be in that area checking for storm damage. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2570, 3030, 5225 and 5240 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2500. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the pump in Bunker’s water tower is out and it will take three to four days to repair. Dent County has bottled water left over from the May 8, 2009 storm and is going to donate that water to the town for disbursement. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the city of Vienna will be offering a free one-time tire collection from 6:00 am to 12:00 (noon) starting today and lasting through July 21^st in the vacant lot behind Vienna City Hall. The Missouri DNR will be covering the costs of disposal. Tires also will be accepted for a fee at a special collection in Maries County on October 1^st. Persons who have tires that they need to dispose of before those events can contact the at MRPC at 573-265-2993 to make special arrangements. Both tire collection opportunities are for residents and not businesses.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Saturday, July 2nd at 9:45 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Babb Lane truck parking lot in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took four Batteries and a battery anchor valued at $490 from a 2002 Peterbilt Truck. On Sunday, July 3rd at 12:06in the afternoon, a 22-year old female of Springfield was transported to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Tuesday, July 5th at 5:30 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a truck parked at the Babb Lane truck parking lot. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took three truck batteries valued at $490. At 5:49 am that same morning, an officer was dispatched to the Second Baptist Church on East Third in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged a lighted sign outside the Church. The value of the damage is approximately $200. Later that same morning at 10:00, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft of flowers from a gravesite. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took flowers valued at $400 from a gravesite in Cedar Grove Cemetery. That afternoon at 12:11, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary in the 700 block of North Young. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a building and took a Troy Built weed eater, a Dewalt cordless drill and a Bostitch nail gun. The items are valued at $575. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts from vehicles, property damage, the theft of flowers from a gravesite and burglary reports, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Vichy Volunteer Fire Department has rescheduled its the three-hour “Chemical Suicide: Information for the Emergency Responder” class from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on Monday, July 11^th at the Vichy Volunteer Fire Department located at 14812 Highway 63 in Vichy. The class was previously scheduled for June 13^th, however, the state instructors for the class have been assisting victims of the May 22 tornado that struck Joplin, and were unable to present the training. Persons previously registered for the June 13 class have automatically been registered for the July 11 class, and additional participants are wanted to attend. Emergency medical, firefighters and law enforcement officers are encouraged to attend the class for instruction on how to safely respond to chemical suicide incidents. The class is offered free of charge through the cooperative efforts of the Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee (MREPC), Missouri Emergency Response Commission, and the Vichy Volunteer Fire Department. It is suggested participants be 18 and older because of the subject matter of the course. Registration for the course is being handled by the State Emergency Management Agency. For additional information on the chemical suicide class, persons may contact Bonnie Prigge at or Michael White, MERC training coordinator, at 417-483-2069. The MREPC is a subcommittee of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission and is charged with planning for hazardous materials emergency preparedness. The committee includes representatives from emergency management, emergency response, local industries, public health, local elected officials and the media from seven counties.

Football camp will start Monday, July 11^th at Salem High School. Camp for grades 7 – 9 will be held July 11^th through July 15^th from 9:00 am to 11:15 am and will meet in the high school weight room each morning. Camp for Grades 10 – 12 will be held July 11^th through July 22^nd from 5:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Cost for each is $25.

Justin Upton belted a two-run homer and Joe Saunders pitched five scoreless innings for the win in a game delayed twice by rain, leading the Diamondbacks to a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. McClellan (6-6) fell to 0-5 in his last six starts. He gave up all four runs -- three earned -- on six hits, walking two and striking out one. Matt Holiday had an RBI double in the 6th inning for the only Cards run. The Cards and Diamondbacks play again tonight on KSMO Radio starting at 6:40.

Ryan Raburn's two-run homer was all the offense Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers needed in a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals to start a four-game set. Mike Moustakas drove in the lone run for the Royals, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Danny Duffy (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked one. The Royals and Tigers play again this weekend before the All-Star Break.

The St. Louis Cardinals activated catcher Gerald Laird from the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract right-handed pitcher P.J. Walters from Triple-A Memphis before starting their four-game series with Arizona on Thursday. In other moves, the Cardinals also designated pitcher Bryan Augenstein for assignment and optioned both first baseman Mark Hamilton and pitcher Brandon Dickson to Memphis.
